SUCCESS SOUTHEND HIGH SCHOOL FOR BOYS
IS A

CHOICE

Year 9 Options January 2023

Introduction

At Southend High School For Boys our unique bridging curriculum model has allowed you to experience all of the subjects

that you could potentially study into Key Stage 4. You are luck
y that our curriculum model has allowed you to be taught

some GCSE content in a vast majority of the subjects you have taken for Year 9. The result of this is that you are now in a
strong position to make informed decisions surrounding your final GCSE choices.

You will not be making these decisions in isolation. You have a number of people that you can turn to for advice. Your
teachers, parents, Head of Year can help with your decision, but ultimately the decision rests with you alone. Whilst

guidance is essential, the final decision is yours.

Making your choice: Advice & Guidance
1.

What subjects do you find interesting? Motivation is a key part of
GCSE – so choose subjects you are interested in.
2.

Careers. If you have a particular career in mind for the future then it is
important that you check which subjects are required, or strongly favoured, by
universities offering the appropriate courses. Look at the website www.ucas.com. This

website will play a crucial part in the choices you make and
our recommendation is that you now start to navigate yourself around this site.

3.
Where do your strengths lie? Another obvious factor for deciding which subjects

to choose is what you are good at. If you have been performing strongly in a
particular subject area, then that should give you confidence in your
selection.
4.

Do what is right for you academically and avoid making choices based on
personal relationships (family, friends, teachers).
5.

If you struggle with organisation and longer pieces of work, check carefully
that the workload you will be taking on is manageable for you.

Again, if you have concerns about this then speak to your subject teacher or Year Leader
who will be able to advise you.
