EHOLD, O God, our defender, and look upon the face of thine Anointed: for one day in
day in thy courts is better than a thousand. Psalm 84. O how amiable are thy dwellings,
dwellings, thou Lord of hosts! my soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts
courts of the Lord.

EEP, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy Church with thy perpetual mercy: and, because the
frailty of man without thee cannot but fall; keep it ever by thy help from all things hurtful,
hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to salvation. Through. Amen.
WE beseech thee, O Lord: that this solemn festival of thy Forerunner and Martyr, Saint John
John Baptist, may effectually bestow upon us thy succour to the attainment of our
salvation: Who livest and reignest. Amen.
EPISTLE
Galatians 5.16
BThe Lesson from the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Galatians.
RETHREN: Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh
lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the
to the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led by the spirit ye are
not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, adultery,
fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations,
wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of
the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past: that they who do such things
shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is: love, joy, peace, long-
suffering, gentleness, faith, meekness, temperance. Against such there is no law. And they that
are Christ’s have crucified the flesh, with the affections and lusts.
GRADUAL – Bonum est confitere
It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put any confidence in man. = It is better to trust in the
Lord, than to put any confidence in princes.
ALLELUIA – Venite, exsultemus
Alleluia, alleluia. = O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us heartily rejoice in the strength of
our salvation. Alleluia.
ATHE HOLY GOSPEL
S. Matthew 6.24
T that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: No man can serve two masters: for either he will
will hate the one, and love the other: or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.
other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your
life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not
the life more than meat: and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air, for they sow
not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns: yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye
not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field how they grow: they toil
not neither do they spin. And yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not
arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and
tomorrow is cast into the oven: shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
Therefore take no thought, saying: What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or wherewithal
shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father
knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his
righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you.

ATHE LAST GOSPEL
S. Mark 6.17
T that time: Herod sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for
Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife, for he had married her. For John had said unto
unto Herod: It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife. Therefore Herodias had a quarrel
against him, and would have killed him, but she could not. For Herod feared John, knowing that
he was a just man and an holy: and observed him, and when he heard him, he did many things,
and heart him gladly. And when a convenient day was come, Herod on his birthday made a
supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee. And when the daughter of the
said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said
unto the damsel: Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. And he sware unto her:
Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. And she went
forth, and said unto her mother: What shall I ask? And she said: The head of John the Baptist.
And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying: I will that thou give
me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. And the king was exceeding sorry: yet
for his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, eh would not reject her: and
immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought. And he went
and beheaded him in the prison. And brought his head in a charger: and gave it to the damsel,
and the damsel gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up
his corpse: and laid it in a tomb.
