About Pulsar

Since 1997, and now with a global installed base comfortably into the hundreds of thousands, Pulsar Process Measurement
is the leading British specialist manufacturer of non-contacting level, volume and flow measurement equipment. Driven by
ground-breaking echo processing and spread-spectrum signal analysis, Pulsar’s equipment is proven in an enormous variety of
applications throughout the process, water and waste treatment and major utilities world-wide.

Now part of the US Instrumentation business Onicon, Pulsar offers a strong supply chain, with R&D and manufacturing in the
UK, in Malvern and our factory in Essex. With sales offices in the USA, Malaysia and China, and expertly supported by a network
of subsidiaries, agents and distributors, Pulsar equipment monitors and measures critical processes; from the Arctic Circle to
the red heart of Australia, Pulsar delivers.

Why Pulsar?

Pulsar pioneered digital echo processing for level measurement through their unique software analysis tool DATEM, creating
a new generation of non-contacting ultrasonic devices. Continued development and refinements to both the transducers and
controllers that harness DATEM’s power have taken Pulsar equipment into areas where non-contacting measurement had never
been contemplated before.

More recently, spread spectrum signal analysis techniques within new Pulsar systems are powering new applications,
including non-invasive flow measurement and radar velocity measurement. Pulsar’s dBR radar level measurement transducers
complement the dB ultrasonic systems and open yet more applications up to Pulsar’s non-contacting measurement expertise.

We pride ourselves on our attention to detail and customer service. From your first contact with our office through to final set-
up of your equipment, Pulsar’s staff are dedicated to the success of your project, offering advice, consultation and support to
ensure that you get the best possible results.

Pulsar for level measurement
& control - DATEM

Pulsar’s Digital Adaptive Tracking of Echo Movement (DATEM) digital echo processing continues to provide the benchmark
by which non-contacting systems are judged. DATEM’s unique and highly effective echo discrimination protocols make
measurement possible in applications that would have been unthinkable a few years ago.

The material being measured has a
fundamentally different type of echo from the
other reflections in any measurement, in that
it moves. DATEM works by identifying other
echoes within the process and discounting
them from the measurement, as in the large
echo on the left of the trace here. In this way,
even competing echoes that are significantly
larger than the target are automatically
ignored.

Radar or ultrasonic, the

choice is yours

Uniquely, Pulsar equipment lets you choose your measurement technology without compromising control and measurement
functions. Up to 16m measurement range, any Pulsar two-part system can be fitted with either ultrasonic or radar transducers.
You can even retrofit a radar transducer to a system running ultrasonically or vice versa if process conditions or requirements
change. From a component system such as Blackbox through to the full-function control specialities of Ultimate, there are no
compromises.

Why ultrasonic? Why radar?

Why choose a Pulsar Ultrasonic system? Ultrasonic is the right Radar offers reliable and accurate measurement in
way to go for most of the applications we see. applications where ultrasonic systems are less effective, for
example:
• Versatile - from a zero effective deadband to 50m range,
solids or liquids. • Foamy liquids - radar measurement gives a more stable
result on foamy applications.
• Reliable, robust and repeatable. The core of non-
contacting measurement and control applications. • Carbon dioxide and some other gases significantly
attenuate a sonic signal - radar is the answer.
• Tight beam angles and low noise design mean even more
reliable measurement. • Some organic solvents and petrochemicals form
unpredictable vapour layers above the surface, affecting
• Proven in hundreds of thousands of applications accuracy. Radar is unaffected by the medium through

conditions change later - best of both worlds. • Radar is not sensitive to temperature changes, so use
it wherever temperature varies, especially if you are

at ambient temperature and pressure (wherever in the
world you are!), and relatively clean conditions. • Radar works well in pressurised applications.

• Radar is more accurate for longer range applications -

• Radar senses a change in dielectric constant so can often
measure level through a plastic surface.

Ultra 4 - the latest evolution

Ultra 4 offers the sophistication and advanced features of the rest of the Ultra range in a compact, cost-effective package and
useful new features that make it even easier to set up and fine-tune. Offering, as the name suggests, four alarm or control
relays (3 x SPCO isolated and 1 x SPNO solid state) and a multifunctional display while losing none of the easy set-up and
configuration that has made the Ultra range the natural choice for non-contacting measurement world-wide.

LIke the rest of Pulsar’s ‘transducer plus controller’ ranges, Ultra 4 is compatible with both dB ultrasonic and dBR radar
transducers. Ultra 4 can be either wall or fascia mounted and includes HART, Profibus and Modbus digital communications
options and the convenience of on-board micro SD card slot for extended data logging. Like the rest of the Ultra range, Ultra 4
also offers in-built volume calculations based on standard tank shapes as well as advanced pump control and open channel
flow measurement functions.
