« INTRODUCTION «

TO SWAYAMBHUNATH

Swayambhu (Devanagari: स्वयम्भू स्तपू ; Newar: स्वयंभू; sometimes
Swayambu or Swoyambhu) is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the
KathmanduValley, west of Kathmandu city.The Tibetan name for the site
means ‘Sublime Trees’ (Wylie: Phags.pa Shing. Kun), for the many varieties of
trees found on the hill. Swayambhu (Sanskrit: स्वयम्भू) is a Sanskrit word
that means “self-manifested”,“self-existing”, or “that is created by its own
accord”. Often, the word swayambhu is used to describe a self-manifested
image of a deity, which was not made by human hands, but instead is
naturally arisen, or generated by nature.

BACKGROUND

OF THE STUDY

We had an excursion that was on 22nd of Dec.2021
from school to a world heritage site Swoyambhunath
Temple i.e. Situated at heart of Kathmandu, Nepal.We
got to know that,Apart from being a very popular site
for tourists to visit, it’s also a place of pilgrimage and
prayer for followers of both Buddhism and Hinduism.
Because of this, it’s one of the best places in the world
to observe religious harmony. Swayambhunath became
a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979.

HISTORY RELATED TO ITS ORIGIN

(IMFORMATION THROUGH SOME LOCAL RESIDENTS AND VARIOUS OTHER SEARCHES.)

Swayambhu is among the oldest religious sites in Nepal.According to the
Gopālarājavaṃśāvalī,it was founded by the great-grandfather of King Mānadeva (464-505
CE), King Vṛsadeva,about the beginning of the 5th century CE. Mythology.According to
Swayambhu Purana,the entire valley was once filled with an enormous lake, out of which
grew a lotus.The valley came to be known as Swayambhu,meaning “Self-Created.”The
name comes from an eternal self-existent flame (svyaṃbhu) over which a sūpa was later
built. Swayambhu Maha Chaitya is the official name of the stupa commonly referred to as
Swayambhunath.However, its first recorded name was “Singru-vihara-caitya-bhatjarika”.Jun
20, 2018 According to the Ramayana and Mahabharata,Vishnu is called swayambhu.The
word etymology of swayambhu is ‘Svayam’ (स्वयम)् which means ‘self’ or ‘on its own’ and
‘bhu’ (भू) which means ‘to take birth’ or ‘arising’.“Singru-vihara-caitya-bhatjarika”.

METHODOLOGY OF STUDY

This report writing was done on the basis of
field visit which is one of the best way to
acquire experience, knowledge and
information about significant , historical and
cultural site like Swayambhu .We were all
school collegue and our social teacher.We
learnt alot and had fun as well. Basically it
taught us alot of things for our life.

OBJECTIVES

FOUND FROM THE STUDY

• To know the current condition of
Swayambhunath temple,

• To understand its historical significance,

• To findout problem that degraded it’s
value,

• To analyse solutions to increase it’s
popularity for future generations .

RESERCH AND DATA COLLECTED

1. The main stupa of Swayambhunath Stupa contains innumerable quantity of subsidiary small Chaityas
or Chabal(miniature stupas) shrines, sacred pillars and so on They Include a two-storied artistic pagoda
style temple of Hindu goddess Harati Mata.

2. The 13 rings of the spire symbolizes the 13 steps of the ladder leading to Nirvana.There are 365 steps
passing through which you will reach the holy site of Swayambhunath stupa.

3. Swayambhu Maha Chaitya is the official name of the stupa commonly referred to as Swayambhunath.
However, its first recorded name was “Singru-vihara-caitya-bhatjarika”.

4. Its also well known as Monkey Temple due to habitat of hundreds of money from really old times..


5. There are Pancha Buddha At Swoyambhu Stupa (5 Buddhas) – Amitabha stupa ,Amoghashidhi Buddha ,
Akshyobha Buddha.Vairochana Buddha , Ratnasambhava Buddha.

1. The stupa is believed to be a symbol of harmony since it showcases the blend of Buddhism and Hinduism in
Nepal.

2. The nose-like structure in between the pair of eyes is the Nepali number Ek (one), and the gilded spire
above represents the 13 stages to nirvana.The spire was painted with 20kg of golds during its renovation in
2010.

3. Swayambhunath Buddist Museum is an archaeological museum that depicts the life of Buddha through
collections of Buddhist statues.To accurately locate this museum, look for a small red brick building with an
ornate wooden door.

4. The Five Dhyani Buddhas (statue) can be seen in the gilded pentagonal toran above the eyes of
Buddha.Swayambhunath is one of the oldest (2000 years old) religious architecture, and one of its kind.

5. Festivals and Events Celebrated At SayambhunathTemple are : Buddha Jayanti(in April or May) ,Losar (in
February or March) ,Gunla celebration (August or September)

6. Some major attractions are :-Shantipur ,Harati Devi Templ, Pratapur and AnantapurShree Karma Raj.

7. On the western side of Swayambhunath stupa is a beautiful pond named World Peace Pond.There is a
statue of Buddha in the middle of the pond and small cauldron at the base.

1. Poor sanitation,
2. Lack of management,
3. Delay in renovation works,
4. Illegal local stalls,
5. Child labour,
6. No security services.

CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATIONS

At last but not the least ,From the excursion we could understand that
Swayambhunath Stupa is an oldest prehistoric Buddhist stupa of Nepal. This is
one of the world's most glorious and famous Buddhist Chaitya.It conveys
majority of importance so it should be preserved and promoted for upcoming
generation by increasing awareness programs and applying government to play
important roles for its conservations. Swayambhunath is perhaps the best place
to observe religious harmony in entire Nepal and must not be missed on a trip
to Kathmandu. Swayambhunath is one of my favourite places in the incredibly
ancient city of Kathmandu. This city is a wonderland of ancient structures and
monuments and there’s enough here to keep you fascinated for weeks. So if
we need to find real peace we must visit Swoyambhunath once in life.♥️
