Fieldhouse Renovation Booklet

ARENA RENOVATION PROJECT

WHY SUPPORT THE ARENA RENOVATION?TRANSFORMATIONYour support transforms our current, outdated Field House into the Regis Arena, a fully-equipped, visitor-friendly athletic facility. The current Field House was built in 1960 to support five varsity and one junior varsity sports for a total of 59 student-athletes. The same Field House currently supports 12 varsity sports for a total of 225 student-athletes. The proposed $8.6 million renovation calls for the following expansion and upgrades:Competition Court - the current competition court is the original surface from when the Field House was constructed. Each summer, the varnish is sanded down and reapplied, and every five years the floor is completely sanded and refinished. At this point, the wood cannot withstand more work without compromising the quality of the court. Replacing the wood gives student-athletes a safe and high quality competition surface and allows Regis to update logos on the court as well as wiring beneath it. Atrium Extension - The current small foyer will be expanded to create a more welcoming entryway for the facility, complete with a walk-up ticket window and a proper food concession. This expansion will also provide reception space for larger events as well as a more prominent home for the Regis University Athletic Hall of Fame. Training Room - As constituted, the training room is inadequate in size and technology to support an NCAA DII athletic program of over 200 student-athletes. More space is needed for equipment and rehabilitation. The renovation creates a state-of-the-art treatment area with a rehabilitation pool and both hot and cold soaking spas. This new space also allows the School of Physical Therapy to establish a permanent clinic to support employees and student-athletes. Weight Room - This space will nearly double its current capacity and all equipment will be upgraded. These upgrades will more closely align Regis with other NCAA DII institutions.Performance Testing Room - This room gives teams a space other than the weight room to use for group fitness training and conditioning. It will include audio-visual equipment, allowing for more efficient exercise sessions. Locker Rooms - Currently, three women’s teams share a locker room and two men’s teams have inadequate locker space. The renovations provide a home base for each of our teams. HVAC System - The current system is dated and inefficient. An upgrade will give Regis the ability to better control the temperature of the facility, and thus, host events more comfortably.TRADITIONYour support allows students to be part of the proud tradition of Regis Athletics. Wearing the name “Regis” across the front of your uniform means something special. It always has. Since 1903, our athletic programs, coaches and student-athletes have made the University proud. Our football program (1903–1941) nurtured NFL hall-of-famer,

Arnie Herber, and our volleyball team has the ninth most NCAA Tournament appearances with 16 amongst all NCAA Division II institutions. Men’s basketball coach, Lonnie Porter, has won 511 career games and ranks 10th amongst active Division II coaches in wins and 36th all-time, and just this year, women’s basketball team standout, Lauren Luebbe, RC ’11, was honored as one of the 30 finalists for the NCAA Division II Woman of the Year award.EDUCATIONYour support lets stellar student-athletes engage in a well-rounded education that will prepare them for success after college. The Jesuit tradition calls for the education of the whole person; head, heart and body. Our student-athletes embody this call to action, learning in the classroom, in the community and in athletic competition. Our athletes have a cumulative GPA of 3.3, compared to a 3.1 for the general student population. They participate in community service, volunteering with the disabled and running summer camps for children. On the field, they grow as leaders, learning the importance of dedication and teamwork. STUDENT EXPERIENCE Your support brings new students and student-athletes to Regis and enhances their experience once they get here. Most universities use sports to help sell students on attending. Picture thousands of screaming fans in face paint and the fun that happens before, after and during games. Renovations would give the University a showpiece for prospective students and a venue that will get them excited about attending games. An updated Field House will also attract prospective student-athletes. As currently constituted, our facilities are often a “step-down” from high school facilities. Renovations will help our coaches recruit top prospects. Better athletes bring more success on the field, which in turn leads to bigger crowds, greater student engagement, expanded community partnerships and generates more interest in Regis as a whole. COMMUNITYYour support builds community on campus, in the greater Denver area and across the Rocky Mountain Region. The Field House is the “front porch” of the University. Events such as Regis athletic contests, summer camps, dinners, ceremonies, concerts and other celebrations are hosted there year-round. Thousands (almost 20,000 for athletic events alone) of visitors come through the Field House each year, and many times, it is the only building they see on campus. An updated “front porch” will make the building a more welcoming venue. It will ensure that visitors get an experience of Regis that reflects the beauty of our campus and encourages them to come again. As an added bonus, a renovated facility will allow Regis to bid for championships with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), further opportunities to show off the University.

231456HIGHLIGHTSWEIGHT ROOM The proposed renovations include expanding the weight room space to nearly double its current capacity and updating all equipment. These upgrades will more closely align us with other NCAA DII institutions.TEAM ROOMThe current facility lacks a Team Room for game preparation. The addition of such a room would allow teams to look at film together and to discuss game and off-season training plans.ATRIUMThe current foyer would be expanded to allow better reception space for larger events. It would also become a place for fans to gather before and after games.DID YOU KNOW?• Jimi Hendrix, Queen and Dolly Parton all performed in the Field House. • One of 3 men who has won a national championship as a player and as coach, Joe B. Hall of University of Kentucky basketball fame, began his coaching career at Regis (1959-64). He also was instrumental in building the Field House in 1960.

They provide a fun and exciting social activity for participants and fans. Sports give the campus a sense of community and a reason for the student body to join together and have pride in their school and the teams that represent them.”ATHLETIC SUCCESS 2010-11• Women’s Soccer won the RMAC Championship this year and a berth into the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year.• Men’s Soccer earned a spot in the NCAA Division II tournament for the first time in school history.• Softball won the RMAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.• Women’s Lacrosse won the inaugural Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association championship and registered the most wins in program history.

23457968HIGHLIGHTS LOCKER ROOMS The existing locker rooms and showers are insufficient and badly in need of repair. Currently, we have three women’s teams sharing locker space and two men’s teams with inadequate space. The renovation would ensure that each team has its own home.TRAINING ROOMThe current training room is inadequate in size and technology. It is not sufficient to support an NCAA DII athletic program of 200-plus student-athletes. The plan for the athletic training area includes an enhanced treatment area with a rehabilitation pool and both hot and cold soaking spas. The newspace allows the School of Physical Therapy to establish a permanent clinic to support employees and student-athletes, as well as, providing a learning environment for PT students. STUDENT STATS 2010-11 • 37 student-athletes were named to RMAC All-Academic Teams. • 4 student-athletes earned Scholar All-America honors. • 45% of our student-athletes had a 3.5 GPA or above in the fall of 2010; in the spring of 2011 that number rose to 55%.• Last fall, our 12 teams averaged a 3.282 GPA; in the spring that number rose to a 3.357.FRANCISCO MARTINEZ, RC ’12MEN’S SOCCER“I am proud that our coaches take the time to recognize that we are student-athletes and not just athletes. I admire how our coaches expect our team GPA to be higher than the general student body. When people think of Regis, they assume we are just a bunch of bookworms trying to be athletes, and I love the looks on their faces when we’ve dribbled past them on the field and in the classroom.”

One. Arnie Herber, aRegis football star in the late 1920’s played for the Green Bay Packers and was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1966, the 4th class ever admitted. • From the time the Field House was originally built until today, Regis has more than doubled its number of varsity sports. • Regis students knew before America that Steve Martin was a wild and crazy guy. One of his earliest stand up performances occurred in the Field Housebefore the Regis student body in the early 1970s.

Serving the community, while also being a member of the Cross Country Team, is an amazing opportunity. You get to help those around you while also building relationships with your teammates. Regis works to make you the best you can be both as an athlete and as a person.”OPEN TO BELOWOPEN TO BELOW

HIGHLIGHTSNEWLAND CENTER Moving the current Newland Center to the upper level and opening it up to the arena space will give Regis the opportunity to host alumni, donor and special guest receptions during competitions. This will enhance the game experience for those guests and also has the potential to help recruit student-athletes. This area will be a benefit to athletics and the University as a whole.DEVIN ECKHARDT, RC ’11WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL“Wearing the Regis uniform meant that I was part of something bigger than myself, andbigger than just the team on which I participated. It signified the hard work I put in over the years to earn the right to wear the jersey. It signified the work I did as a student to obtain my degree. It reminded me that I wasrepresenting not only myself on the court but the whole Regis community.” SERVICE STATS 2010-11• Student-athletes at Regis contributed 3,424 hours of service to the community last year.• Student-athletes served at the Special Olympics, the Race for the Cure, the Ronald McDonald House, the Food Bank of the Rockies and the Mile High Down Syndrome Association among other organizations.

FAN SUPPORTBARB SCHROEDERFORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR The Field House is arguably the most-utilized building on the Lowell campus - not just by student-athletes, but by the public. The Field House should be the “front porch” of the campus because it plays host to a wide variety of activities. Having said that, there are many factors that restrict its use: lack of air conditioning, adequate locker room and shower facilities, meeting spaces, etc. With an improved infrastructure and creative scheduling, the facility could be used more effectively than it is now.PARENTSTHE FREEMAN FAMILYAs parents of a soccer player, we have been impressed by the quality of the fields and other enhancements that have been made in the last few years. Student-athletes dedicate a significant amount of time to training for their respective sports, and these continuing improvements will inspire them and make them excited to be part of the Regis athletic program. Having “top notch” athletic facilities also makes Regis University more attractive to future Regis students. ALUMNILAUREN LUEBBE, RC ’11WOMEN’S BASKETBALLNCAA DIVISION II WOMAN OF THE YEAR FINALISTI have taken potential studentathletes on campus tours, and you can sense their interest decline when you take them into the gym, training room, and especially the weight room and locker rooms. With a larger training room, athletes would be able to do more physical therapy exercises and their rehab wouldn’t take as long; this is from firsthand experience, as I rehabbed from two significant knee injuries in the training room. Creating an improved weight room would allow student-athletes and teams to becomemore competitive in the RMAC. LONNIE PORTERHEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACHCO-FOUNDER OF THE PORTER-BILLUPS LEADERSHIP ACADEMYRenovations to the Field House will draw more fans to the games, which does two things. It inspires studentathletes to perform at a higher level and also creates a stronger sense of community on campus. It gives students, alumni and even people from the local area a place to come together and to share in the experience of athletic competition, while also enhancing the studentathlete experience. That is a benefit to Regis and the city of Denver. ALUMNIRUBEN MARTINEZ, RC ’07SOCCER, FORMER COACHHaving a place in the Field House that each team can call their own, I believe is extremely important in the development of successful programs. Currently, I believe that the basketball and the volleyball teams are the only programs that have proper locker rooms that they can go to before and after games. As a former player and coach at Regis, I know it is vital for each team to have their space and to feel that part of the school is theirs.
