David M. Clarke, S.J., has experienced a rich and diverse personal and professional path. He earned abachelor’s and master’s degree in organic chemistry from Gonzaga University, a doctorate in physicalchemistry from Northwestern University, and was employed as a chemist at Inland Empire Refineries, Inc.Father Clarke discovered the Catholic faith as an undergraduate student at Gonzaga University. Hisexperience at a Jesuit university inspired him to enter the Society of Jesus as a member of the OregonProvince in 1953. He was ordained a priest in 1964 and held academic and administrative positions atmany different colleges before coming to Regis in 1972 as the 22nd president.During his tenure as president from 1972 to 1992, Father Clarke made a lasting impression on Regis.He helped the University forge new pathways, discover new opportunities and invest more completely inits future. In the spirit of our Jesuit forefathers, his passion for education has been illustrated time andagain by his dedication to this institution. Father Clarke began our adult programs and changed thename of the growing Regis College to Regis University. In addition, when Loretto Heights College (LHC)closed, he integrated LHC faculty and students into the Regis community through the addition of heathcare education and other programs.Father Clarke’s dedication to Regis University as president and chancellor has enabled Regis to continuemaking a difference in the lives of students and through them, the world. In October of 2011, RegisUniversity began construction of David M. Clarke, S.J. Hall. This building honors the legacy of a trueeducational entrepreneur who was instrumental in the founding of the College for Professional Studies.January 2013
