Editor’s Note

Here we are reaching to you with
the 10th and the last issue of
Volume 18 of IT’S US Newsletter,
which shares the incredible Leo
moments during the last month.

On behalf of UoM Leo Club, we
wish all our readers a very happy &
blessed Sinhala & Tamil New Year,
which brings you prosperity, love,
and good health. As we step into
the new year, let’s focus on fresh
resolutions and ponder on our
goals. Let’s embrace the changes
in order to make ourselves and our
lives better.

Although we had to face many
challenges due to pandemic and
economic crisis, LEAP’22 – Phase
01 was successfully conducted
during the last month with the
intention of uplifting the leadership
skills of school students.

Moreover, we were able to
successfully conduct Phase 07
of Project Shilpasara – a seminar
series for the students who face
the O/Ls this year, Swayan Charika
- a project to strengthen the
career path of elderly through self-
employment, Aid Allies - a project
to teach the possible ways of
protecting others in any emergency
cases and HighBench – an initiative
to build up the professional skills
for interview facing.

Leoism is always about unity, companionship, and teamwork.
Proving this, UoM Leos were able to arrange Lineage’22, the reunion
of Leo Club of University of Moratuwa in March. The first sailors of
UoM Leo Club took us back to their unforgettable memories of this
unceasing voyage.
Also, the Grand Finale of Genio Innovative Competition ended
successfully while bringing out novel ideas to help low-income families. Oceans Alive
6.0, a turtle conservation project was held last week in Dehiwala with the participation
of A2 Leos. Thus, together we have achieved many great accomplishments this year as
well.
This colourful issue of ‘IT’S US’ is filled with recent projects of our blissful journey,
and they will take you through beautiful memories. Most importantly, you’re warmly
welcomed to share your thoughts with us in making improvements to our newsletter.
On a final note, I would like to thank all the persons who contributed writing inspiring
articles & items and our mindful readers.
Stay in touch with us to witness the unbreakable legacy of UoM Leos.

Joining UoM Leo family was a great opportunity that I got to polish my leadership qualities and
get lots of experience.

“Awakening” is the first project in which I have participated. I got this chance by coincidence,
and I also contributed as the chairperson of this project. This project is the most memorable
one in my Leo movement. In this project, we did some wall paintings and turned the landscape
of a preschool into a safe play zone for
the kids. Before I attended this project, I
thought that the president and the office-
bearers are so egoistic. But they weren’t.
They were so friendly and like a family.

After that, I joined several projects
like Fluency Fast, Ruhiru Paramitha,
Stimulus, Light on Your Dreams, chakkare,
Nimna Theertha, etc. As a result, I made
a lot of new friends and had a lot of new
experiences.

After that, I got the chance to join the IT
panel. It was a new  experience in my life,
and I had to face a lot of challenges. Mihiran
Ayya, Saduni Akka, and other IT panellists
sincerely helped me, and they taught me a
lot of things from their vast knowledge.

UOM Leo Club is not only a club that serves
society, but also a club where that tries to
improve its members’ abilities. I also got
the chance to improve my abilities and
knowledge with Knowventure and Speech
Bubble projects.

The unity of the UOM family is amazing. This
unity is the product of caring, protection,
trust, and brotherhood. The decision that I
have made to join the UoM Leo family is a
good decision in my life.

Today we are going to meet the Leo of the month for February 2022. He is an undergraduate of
the Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa..

Here we give him the space to share his feelings and experiences of being a part of UoM Leos.

01 Hello Hasitha, Let me start like this: How do you explain Hasitha Viduranga?
Speaking of myself, I am a person who is always enthusiastic in every deed that I am performing

in. And I am always looking forward to working for the betterment of society. This led me to

be a part of the Leo Club at University of Moratuwa as

well. I am also quite a frank person, who’s always open

to make new friends and enjoy every moment in life.

Considering my academic studies, currently I am an

Engineering Undergraduate at University of Moratuwa.

02 “Leo of the month”, what do you feel
about your achievement?

If I am being honest, it was one of the happiest

moments of my career. I was happy with the person

I have developed within me through the Leo Club

of University of Moratuwa. It made me

realize that I have contributed to society in

the best way I can, and it simply made me

happy to have been recognized. This made

me move further ahead in my career as a

UoM Leo.

03 Okay, how did your journey begin as a
UoM Leo?

At the beginning of my university life, I
was curious about what UoM Leos is. So I
participated in the orientation program of
the club that was held for the 20th batch
students. That inspired me and it built an
interest inside me to join the Leo Club of
University of Moratuwa.

14

04 What are the projects that you have engaged in so far?

“Sneha Warsha” was the very first project I joined in my Leo career.
Afterwards, I was able to engage in many more valuable projects,
“Diriya Arunella”, “Oceans Alive”, “Ayubowan Yalpanam” and
“Kalaguna”, which made me adore my time as a Leo of UoM. Then I got
the opportunity to engage in the project “Ridma ft Abhiru” as the Co-
Chair and I am working on it currently. “Leap’22 Phase 01” is another
very special project in my Leo career since I gained my first experience as a project chairman.

05 Among those, what was your favorite project? Share your experience with us.

Leap’22 Phase 01 is a project that holds a special place in my Leo career. It was my first and
the only project I worked as a chairman in my career so far. It was a two-day workshop that
targeted the youngsters of the Board of Prefects at Keerthi Abeywickrama National College,
Morawaka. Through this project, we focused on developing the leadership skills among them
by conducting a variety of interactive activities and games. Also, we were able to conduct a
fire camp and a crockery show as well. While fulfilling my duty as the chairman of the project,
I was also able to gain a lot of experiences to my life as I got to work with a lot of students.

06 Now, how do you feel when you look back as a UoM Leo?

Simply, Leo Club of University of Moratuwa is my second family. Leo Club is a place full of
happiness and joy. So far, being a UoM Leo has been one of the best chapters of my life. I have
always loved Leoism and I’ll always enjoy being a UoM Leo.

07 According to you, what is the most important thing you gained as a Leo?

I believe the best reward I received by being a UoM Leo is a good family, the Leo Family. Leo
Club is not just a club, it is a whole family full of love, laughter, joy, and happiness. We have
older brothers and sisters who support us whenever we need, and that has always been
precious to our careers. Through this family, I’ve been able to learn quite a few lessons that
are important to my life. It has always guided me to balance the extracurricular activities and
academic studies.

08 One last question, what are your future plans with the UoM Leo club, and what is your
message to your juniors who are willing to join with Leo Club?

I am forever grateful to have been able to be a part of the Leo Club and I am utterly delighted

to continue my career with UoM Leos.

Currently I am working with the project “Ridma ft Abhiru”. In the near future, I wish to
contribute to more projects conducted by UoM Leos, the best way possible.

And finally, I would like to address the juniors who are willing to join UoM Leos by simply
saying that you’re about to enter a wonderful new chapter in your life. It would be a marvelous
experience to serve the society and gain good experiences to your life as well. Joining with the
UoM Leos would be a turning point of your life, and I would request you to not to miss out on
that golden opportunity.

Kadupul Flower

Do you know what is the most expensive flower in the world?
It is a beautiful flower and also we can see it at night! The answer is “Kadupul Flower”.
The scientific name of this queen of night is, Epiphyllum oxypetalum. This beautiful flower
is white in colour with number of small petals. This flower is priceless. The reason for
this is kadupul flower is very rare and it cannot be harvested, because it blooms at night
time and not day time. These flowers have a short lifespan because they have cactus-
like roots and they will not be able to survive even a night. Kadupul lives only for a few
hours after it is picked, hence it is not possible to sell this exotic and unique flower. Lots
of native Sri Lankans see the beauty of this flower rarely.
The lifetime of this flower is 2-3 hours. We have to wait until midnight to see the beauty
of this flower. Because of the rareness of this flower, people offer it to Lord Buddha
during the night.
Because of the rareness of kadupul flower, it is the most expensive flower in the world
without a specific price!!

Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh Bhavnani, the most talented and the renowned artist of the past decade is the
recipient of several awards including four Filmfare awards as well as one of the highest paid
Indian actors.

As the artist of a film is called a hero, not an actor in India, instead of being an ordinary actor
Ranveer’s dream was to be a hero. Hence this proficient and talented actor can be recognized
as a self-made man who followed his passion; his love for acting and made his journey from
ordinary youth to an artist who has been featured in Forbes India’s celebrity 100 list since 2012.
Unlike any artist who has a familial connection in Bollywood, Ranveer’s path to the best debut
artist was not filled with roses. He had to go through a lot of hardships to affirm his place in the
Indian film industry.

Born on 6th July 1985, in a Sindhi family as Ranveer Singh Bhavnani, dropped his surname
“Bhavnani” as it was “too long, too many syllables”. As Ranveer always aspired to be an actor he
participated in several school plays and
debates. However, after entering the H.
R. College of Commerce and Economics,
since he realised that getting a break in
the film industry was not easy, feeling that
the idea of acting is “too far-fetched”, he
focused on creative writing and then he
entered Indiana University, Bloomington,
US to complete his Bachelor of Arts
degree. In university he decided to take
acting classes and took up theatre as his
minor. There he got a chance to perform
in front of the students as his instructor
asked him to. Then he recited dialogues
in Hindi. Although the audience did not
understand even a word, he could impress
all of the audience and evoke an emotional
reaction from the audience with his
performance. With the inspiration he
got in this moment, he started to
believe that he had something
in his soul and the dream of
becoming an actor was
revived.

19

After completing studies, Ranveer returned to India in 2007 and worked
for a few years in advertising as a copywriter. But shortly he left the job
to pursue his dream and began his struggle to the big screen. He tried to
join some theatres but it was hard to be in one. He did everything to be
near the theatre, near his passion. He did all kinds of work from pulling up
chairs, bringing the actors tea, turning lights on-off, everything he could do
to be helpful to the theatre. He even used to set up, break the set down.
He tried each and every way he could to contact directors, producers and
even stole numbers from the phones. In this challenging period there were
some moments when he doubted his decision. But deep down, in his heart
a voice was shouting, “hold a little more, stay a little more”. Therefore he
did not let the fear overcome his belief. He did not quit.

Finally, in January 2010, Ranveer
received a phone call, ascending
spring to his life and was called
for an audition by Shanoo
Sharma, the head of the casting
division for Yash Raj Films and
was selected for a lead role of
their film, Band Baaja Baaraat,
a romantic comedy set in the
world of wedding planning. After
a few more auditions, Ranveer
was confirmed for the role of
Bittoo Sharma, the hero of the
film. The film earned 214 million
at the domestic box office. Then
he won Best Male Debut in the
56th Filmfare awards. Following
Band Baja Baaraat, Ranveer
Singh signed for Ladies Vs Ricky
Bahl, which earned 370 million.
Then the list goes on. Lootera,
Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela,
Gunday, Bajirao Mastani and
many more.

Finally all the debts of his
unflagging perseverance and all
his endeavours were paid off. His
acting and his belief in himself
made him what he is now; the
most loved artist, always full of
life.
