ASSIGNMENT SB025

BIODIVERSITY & ECOLOGY NAME: NURUL KHALIDAH BINTI MOHD HIZAM MATRICULATION NUMBER: MS2213105037 PRACTICUM: H4T03A LECTURER: DR. HIDAYATUL ILLAH BINTI AHMAD SAAD ASSIGNMENT SB025 (2022/2023)

ECOSYSTEM DIVERSITY i. Ecosystem diversity is one of the three types of biodiversity. Briefly explain on the ecosystem diversity and give THREE examples of terrestrial ecosystems Three examples of terrestrial ecosystems are: 3. Desert 2. Tundra 1. Tropical rainforest refers to the big variety of environments produced by the interplay of the living (animals and plants) and non-living world (earth forms, soil, rocks and water).

ii. Construct a food chain which consists of FOUR trophic levels based on your own observation on the lake ecosystem in KMPP Algae Guppy fish Asiatic softshell turtle Asian water monitor lizard

Eukarya Protista Eukarya Animalia Eukarya Animalia Eukarya Animalia Chlorophyta Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Ability to perform photosynthesis Chordata Poecilia reticulata Breed at an incredible rate Chordata Amyda cartilaginea Fast swimmers Chordata Varanus salvator Alert and intelligent iii. For the above food chain, classify the organisms at every trophic level into taxonomic groups of domain, kingdom, phylum, and genus/species. Identify at least ONE unique characteristic of each organism. Domain Kingdom Phylum Unique characteristic Genus/species 1st trophic level 3rd trophic level 4th trophic level 2nd trophic level Organisms Taxonomic groups

WHAT IS FOOD WEB? > Interconnected between one food chain and another to form a large network > One species may form part of many different food chains to make it stable iv. A food web may create a more stable lake ecosystem. Explain on this statement with a possible example of food web (which consist of 3-5 food chains) for the lake ecosystem (provide also a diagram of the food web).

iv. A food web may create a more stable lake ecosystem. Explain on this statement with a possible example of food web (which consist of 3-5 food chains) for the lake ecosystem (provide also a diagram of the food web). Green algae Mysis shrimp Zebra mussels Copepod Yellow perch fish

EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTION Bacteria and parasites in poorly treated sewage may enter drinking water supplies and cause digestive problems such as cholera and diarrhea. MAY CAUSE DISEASE OR ACT AS POISONS v. Explain the effects of water pollution on the lake ecosystem. Suggest ways to prevent this environmental issue. EFFECT OF THERMAL DISCHARGES ON WATER QUALITY ALTER THE GENETIC MAKEUP OF AN ORGANISM Resulting in either death or extreme deformities. Examples of deformities include large fish tumors and threelegged frogs. Thermal pollution also causes a decrease on the driving force or oxygenation which may directly kill aquatic life through asphyxiation.

DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY Never pour something that isn't biodegradable down the drain. WAYS TO PREVENT WATER POLLUTION DON'T USE PESTICIDES AND HERBICIDES These chemicals leach deep into the ground and get into the groundwater below. DON'T FLUSH MEDICATION Medication is made with a variety of substances that can be detrimental to the water supply.
