Mr Loh Kea Yu
For 157 years, twenty-three Brother Directors of St. Xavier’s
Principals of SXI Institution handed down the torch of the Xaverian light from one to
another. Although we acknowledge the guidance given by all of them,
each of them also played a distinctive role in addressing the emerging
challenges that arose during their tenure as Directors. We highlight
some of their contributions.

19th Century Founders

Br Venere Paul Chapuit was appointed the first Director in 1852 and
laid the foundation for one of the finest educational institutions in
the country. His leadership and managerial skills steered St Xavier’s
towards countless successes and achievements not only in the academic
field but also in extra-curricular activities. During his term from 1852
to 1858, with a second term from 1874 to 1876, he built a proper
school building to accommodate the ever increasing school enrolment.
After his accomplishments in St Xavier’s, he was also responsible for
establishing the Lasallian Mission in India and Burma. He died in
France on 9 January 1882.

Br Aloysius Gonzaga Pin was born in 1847 and emigrated as a
child with his parents from France to Singapore, where he attended

St Joseph’s Institution. He taught in various schools in India and
Colombo and came to Penang in 1879 as Director of St Xavier’s
Institution. He remained for eighteen years and was regarded as the
second founder of St Xavier’s. During his long tenure he transformed
the curriculum, added several extensions to the school building and
completed the grand façade of a pre-war St Xavier’s, making it into a
truly beautiful and excellent educational institution. In 1897, he was
sent to Mandalay, Burma, to found St Peter’s High School and became
its first Director. He died on 4 December 1897 in Mandalay.

Pre-World War Two

The great Br Marius James Byrne was born in 1869 and joined the staff
of St Xavier’s in December 1887 when he was 18 years old. For the next
fourteen years, his personal impact on the students, his firmness, and
his concern for quality became legendary legacies of the school. In 1901
he was appointed Director and served in that capacity until 1912. In
1912 at the age of forty-three he became Brother Visitor of the Penang
District, which extended from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to the Philippines,
until 1946. In his capacity as Brother Visitor, Br James was credited with
numerous achievements which greatly contributed to pre-World War II
education in British Malaya, namely the recruitment and formation of
Asian Brothers, defining the place of the Brothers’ schools in relation to
developments in colonial government policy, and the ongoing training
of Lay Teachers. Br James was decorated with the Order of the British
Empire (OBE). He died on 12 July 1947 in his beloved Penang and was
buried at the Western Road Christian Cemetery.

Br Marcian James Cullen was born in Ireland in 1868. He served
two terms as Brother Director, the first from 1912 to 1915 succeeding
Br James, and again, briefly, in 1917. Br Marcian was greatly revered by
many as Novice Master at the Novitiate in Pulau Tikus, Penang. He died
on 2 September 1938 in Hong Kong at the age of 70.

Br Barnitus John Kennedy was born in Ireland in 1879. After
graduation, he was assigned to St Xavier’s in 1905. He also served briefly
in Mandalay, Burma (1913) and Kuala Lumpur (1914). Br Barnitus
became Pro-Director of St Xavier’s (1914-1915), then Director from 1915
to 1917 and again from late 1917 to 1921. In 1923 he returned to Kuala
Lumpur for a short assignment and then spent the rest of that decade
in Moulmein. Upon his return to Malaya in 1930, he served briefly in
Seremban before being made Director of Novices and Scholastics at the
Novitiate in Pulau Tikus (1932-42). During the Pacific War (1942-1945),
Br Barnitus was among the group of Brothers interned by the Japanese
at Bahau. After the War, at the age of 66, he became Brother Visitor and
devoted all his energies and time towards the post-War reconstruction of
the Brothers’ schools in the Penang District. He retired at the Novitiate in
Pulau Tikus, Penang and died on 10 March 1965 at the age of 86. He was
also awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

Br Flannan Paul Gallagher was born in Ireland in May 1883 and
had the honour of serving as Director of St Xavier’s for three terms:

1922-1926, 1929-1935, and 1938-1947. He was Brother Visitor from
1926-1929, and also served as Director of St Michael’s, Ipoh. Although
somewhat eclipsed by the dominant Br James during the pre-War
years, he contributed much to the post-War rebuilding of the Brothers’
schools especially in Penang, Perlis and Kedah. In Penang, he assisted in
the construction of the new St Xavier’s building to replace the old one
which had been destroyed during the War. He died in Singapore on 6
November 1972 at the age of 89.

Br Sigolin Henry who served briefly as Director in 1926 was
succeeded by Br Vulbas Joseph, a Frenchman, who held the position
for about a year (1926-1927). Br Vulbas was only fifty-seven when he
died in Hong Kong in 12 October 1945. Br Aubert became Director for
less than a year in 1928 before Bro Flannan took over the Directorship
for his second term (1919-1935). Br Amor Mattias Linehan was made
Director from 1936 to 1938, and again briefly in 1940. After the War, he
headed the St Joseph’s Training College, Pulau Tikus. He returned to his
native Ireland where he died on 16 August 1979, aged 86.

Post-World War II and Reconstruction of St. Xavier’s

Br Fintan Patrick (Kieran Blake) was born in 1893. He was Director of
St Xavier’s immediately after the war in 1947. The St Xavier’s then was
a cluster of attap huts. With his indomitable spirit and determination,
Br Fintan carried the school through these trying times. In 1953 he was
appointed Director of St Joseph’s Training College in Penang. Then in
1955, he succeeded Br Barnitus as Brother Visitor of the Penang District
and died in office on 22 October 1961 at the age of 68. Br Fintan was
often remembered as one who was sweet tempered and very gentle
with a kind disposition.

Br Stephen Anthony Knoll was born in 1916 and succeeded Br Fintan
as Director in 1953. He was only thirty-three years old then but proved a
capable administrator. It was thanks to his tireless effort, with assistance
from various quarters, that the construction of the new school building
became a reality. He died on 28 July 1981 in Hong Kong.

Br Dorothy Joseph Brophy, born in 1893 and of Irish descent, held the
Directorship (1955-1956) when the school settled into its present new
building. However, his Directorship was brief and he was succeeded by
Br Michael Jacques. He died on 13 June 1972 in Penang.

Br Theoderet Michael Jacques was born in 1916 in Kuching, Sarawak,
and studied at St. Xavier’s. He became its Sub-Director in 1952
for a brief period before he was promoted to Director of St Francis’
Institution, Malacca. He returned as Director of his Alma Mater in 1956
and remained in this post until 1961, when he assumed the position of
Brother Visitor of the District of Penang.

His numerous achievements in St Xavier’s included the introduction
of a set of school regulations for all students, the organisation of the
Prefects’ Board with a constitution, the formation of Sixth Form classes,
the opening of an Arts and Crafts room and a workshop for Woodwork
and Metalwork classes, the building of the tennis and basketball courts,

Roll of Service 67

and improvements to the condition of the school playing field. Br
Michael Jacques was instrumental in setting up the St Xavier’s Branch
School at Jalan Brother James, Pulau Tikus, and La Salle School, Air
Itam, to relieve the overcrowding in the Primary Section.

In 1966, Br Michael Jacques became the first Asian to be elevated to
the post of Assistant Superior General for Asia. Upon his return from
Rome in 1977, he again became Brother Visitor and held this post until
his retirement in 1985. For his contributions to education in the nation,
he was conferred a Dato in 2009. He died in Petaling Jaya at the age of
94 on 31 March 2011.

Br Tibertius Lawrence Spitzig was born in 1918 in Toronto, Canada.
Br Lawrence became Director in 1962. Under his leadership, the school
library was developed and extended considerably. Public speaking was
greatly encouraged. He was appointed Brother Visitor in October 1975.
In 1978 he assumed the Directorship of St John’s Institution, Kuala
Lumpur, and remained in this position until his retirement in early
1983. He was conferred a Datuk in 2009. He died in Petaling Jaya on 18
August 2009.

Br Charles Levin (aka Karl Wolf ) was born in 1927. Br Charles, a
native of Germany, received his tertiary education in Dublin. He
assumed the Directorship in 1967. Br Charles was a disciplinarian
and an efficient administrator. During his tenure as Director (1967-
1979), academic excellence was attained and extra-curricular activities
flourished. Additional buildings were added such as the New Science
Block and the Commerce Rooms while extensions were made to the
staffroom and cafeteria. Br Charles greatly encouraged students to be
service-oriented and the Social Action Group was initiated to promote
this trait among students. After retirement, he resided in St Xavier’s and
took upon himself the responsibility of preserving the heritage of St.
Xavier’s as well as its gardens. He died in Penang on 14 October 2012.

Br Casimir Hannon began his teaching in St Xavier’s and served
as Director in St Xavier’s from 1980-93 for 14 years. He continued to
pursue the direction set by Br Charles and always inspired his students
and staff in his gentle ways to make better use of their time and
energies to promote character and academic development. He is always
remembered for his gentle ways and for fostering an environment
in St Xavier’s for “silence” in the classroom, and for focusing on full
human and spiritual development in extra-curricular activities. He was
posted to Kuala Lumpur to continue his mission in Malaysia. He died
in Petaling Jaya in 1997.

Br Paul Ho, was born in Penang, had his early education in St Xavier’s
and returned as the last Brother Principal in the school’s 157-year
history in 1993 and retired from the Education service in 2009. He was
responsible for the setting up of the Baking Department for students
who wanted to develop their skills. This project continues till today. He
worked closely with staff and alumni to see to the overall development
of his Alma Mater. After retirement he was posted to Singapore to
continue his mission. In 2016, he was appointed an Auxilary Visitor for
the Lasallian East Asian District (LEAD).
