Get the most out of your summertime
experiences with this quick guide.
Summer is Here!
The long and hot summer days are perfect
for relaxing with a cold drink in hand – or
entertaining a group of friends while they do
the same. Our Haskell’s Summer Drink Guide
has some great recommendations about the best
summer beers, wines and spirits, and how to
serve them.
Beer! crisp, refreshing
light, fruity, hoppy
the best beers of the season
The best summer beers are ones you’ll want
to sip even when it’s hot and muggy outside,
so look for lighter alternatives to your winter
favorites. We recommend these top three styles
of brew:
Summer Shandies are a key standby this season.
They are technically a beer cocktail—combining
a good brew and fruit juice—which makes them
both refreshing and intoxicating. There are
many good shandies out there, from ones made
with lemon, lime and grapefruit to stone fruits
like peaches and nectarines.
Sours have taken over the craft beer world.
They’re an especially good choice for summer
because they’re light and fruity. Some craft beer
makers are even aging sour beers in old wine
barrels, producing new beers with grapey tastes.
Session Ales are also perfect for summer
because they’re lighter and more refreshing
than wintertime ales. With fewer calories and
lower ABV, they’re
a great option
for afternoons on
the patio.

best wines to beat the heat.
Summertime is all about the lighter
styles of wine. Most people think of chilled
white wines—like Sauvignon Blancs, Rieslings
and Chardonnays—when they think of summer,
but white isn’t your only option. Rosés are also
a great summer choice. You might also try a
Lambrusco, a refreshing sparkling red. And
don’t forget about other sparkling wines like
Champagnes and Proseccos.
No matter what you choose, make sure to have
plenty of ice around to keep these wines cold.

Frosé
Frozen rosé has been labeled by some as the “it” drink
of summer. Some may shake their heads at the thought
of a wine slushie, but we ask you to withhold judgment
until you’ve seen the recipe. This one’s whirred from a
combination of fresh strawberries, rosé, grenadine, and
vodka.
Ingredients
1 (750 ml.) bottle of dry rosé
10 ounces of fresh strawberries (about 2 cups, sliced),
plus more for garnish (optional)
1 tablespoon of granulated sugar
¼ cup vodka Want to try Frosé? Our rosé trio basket,
2 tablespoons offers three different types of rosé that are
grenadine perfect for summer. Really like rosé? Try our
Steps bouquet of six bottles.
1. Pour the rosé
into ice cube trays and freeze until solid, 8 hours or
overnight.
2. Combine the strawberries and the sugar in the bowl of
a blender and let sit at room temperature for about 10
minutes, until the berries begin to release their juices.
3. Add the vodka, grenadine, and rosé cubes. Blend the
mixture on high until smooth. Pour into glasses and
garnish with strawberries, if desired.
Peach Whiskey Sweet Tea
Ingredients
2 cups whiskey
6 cups water
7-8 black tea bags
2-3 fresh peaches, diced
1 cup sugar
1 lemon, juiced
Steps
1. Combine your peaches,
lemon juice, sugar and water and bring to a boil.
2. Boil the mixture until the peaches are falling apart.
3. Strain the mixture through a fine strainer into a
pitcher over your tea, allow to cool.
4. Add whiskey to the tea, then serve over ice, with
garnishes of your choice.
Moscow Mule
Even if you haven’t yet indulged, you’ve probably heard
of this vodka and ginger beer cocktail served in copper
mugs. There’s a

absolutely thirst-quenching: especially on hot and muggy
summer evenings.
Just mix these ingredients together in a copper mug:
1 half lime
2 ounces of vodka
4 to 6 ounces of Cock’n Bull Ginger Beer
Bootleg Cocktail
Somewhere between spiked lemonade and a mojito is the
bootleg cocktail (sometimes called a bootlegger).
Ingredients
½ cup fresh lemon juice
¼ cup fresh lime juice
¼ cup honey, sugar or agave nectar (to taste)
2 packed tablespoons of fresh mint leaves
Mix these ingredients together in a blender until the
mint is broken up into small bits. Then, fill cocktail
glasses with ice and fill them
with equal parts of your lemon/
lime mix, club soda and vodka
or bourbon.
Watermelon Ice Cubes
Looking for a better way to
keep your drinks cold while
entertaining this summer?
Try watermelon ice cubes!
They’re simple: all you need is a
seedless watermelon, a baking sheet and a freezer.
Start by cutting your seedless watermelon into cubes
and laying them flat on a baking sheet. If you’d like,
add a sprinkle of coarse salt, diced mint or basil. Put
the baking sheet in the freezer for about three hours or
until frozen. Your watermelon ice cubes aren’t only for
summer cocktails. They also make great additions to non-
alcoholic drinks like sparkling water or lemon-lime soda.
Byrd Ave Classic Margarita
With warmer temperatures come margaritas. These
classic drinks are made with three basic ingredients:
tequila, triple sec and lime, but there are nearly
unlimited variations to choose from.
Want to get started? No need to buy the mix: just good
tequila, orange cordial and some fresh limes to create
this classic margarita.
Here’s what you need:
Fresh limes
Tequila (Ask your friendly Haskell’s staff for their
favorite pick)
Orange Cordial (Triple Sec, Cointreau, Caballero, Gran
Marnier plus many others)
Ice
Kosher salt
Small plate
Steps
1. Juice limes into a measuring cup for easy pouring.

Manhattans
Haskell’s knows the secret to the best Manhattan
you will ever have. It’s all about having the right
ingredients.
We use Old Overholt Rye Whiskey and a fantastic Italian
Vermouth called Antica Sweet Vermouth—this is the
secret! It’s absolutely worth it! Great cherries are also
key—not the neon red ones. We recommend Griottines
cherries from France or Luxardo Cherries from Italy.
Dashfire Bitters finish off the drink.
Do’s and Don’ts summer event planning
tricks & tips from your friends at haskell’s
When it comes to summer entertaining,
nobody wants thirsty guests. One of the most frequent
questions we get from people is how many drinks to plan
on serving. For proper planning, start with your guest list.
Are these college kids or the ladies from church? Cater to
your audience. A good rule of thumb: for each guest, plan
for one drink per hour times the length of the event.
Should you serve beer, wine or spirits? An easy way
to plan is to divide your guest list into thirds and plan
accordingly with a range of beer, wine and cocktails. Many
summertime hosts plan a special cocktail to offer. Any
of the ones we mentioned in this guide make great hot
weather treats for your guests.
Things to remember:
DO ask for help! The folks at Haskell’s love to talk
about alcohol: whether it is wine, brew, or spirits. Ask
a Haskell’s staffer for their favorite picks. We can help
plan your party or event to amaze your guests!
DO use delivery. Make it simple and have your alcohol
delivered: especially if you’re hosting a big event. Most
people don’t even know they can get alcohol delivered,
but at Haskell’s we have been delivering for more than
80 years. Alcohol delivery is more convenient and allows
you to focus on the important things: like setting up the
BBQ, making food, sending invitations or booking the
band.
DO celebrate with friends. HAVE FUN! Take the time to
enjoy a few drinks with your friends this summer. The
good weather passes too quickly: especially in Minnesota.
Soon, we’ll be back to drinking Port & oatmeal stout beer
by the fire. Celebrate summer while
it lasts.
DON’T forget the ice!
It is always better to
have and not want
than to need and not
have: fill an extra
cooler up with ice as
back up.
DON’T bring glass
to the pool or beach.
Stay safe with drinks
in non-breakable
containers. There
are so many cool new
drinkware designs that are plastic. When planning a pool
or beach party: plan your drinks accordingly.
DON’T overindulge. We encourage everyone to drink
responsibly: especially during the hot weather. Plan fun
non-alcoholic drinks as well as alcoholic ones and bring
plenty of water when you’re out and about.
