Hydrophilic Coated Catheter
with Water Sachet
Male User Guide
What is Intermittent
Self-Catheterisation?
Intermittent Self-Catheterisation (ISC) is a procedure
whereby you are taught to empty your bladder at regular
intervals throughout the day using a special tube known as a
catheter. This procedure is often recommended by healthcare
professionals for certain conditions which may prevent the
bladder from emptying in the normal way.
This booklet provides additional information on ISC and the
use of the UltraSmooth Aqua® ISC catheter, which your
healthcare professional has recommended and is not intended
to replace any of the advice which has been provided by them.
The Bene ts of Intermittent
Self-Catheterisation
ISC can be carried out safely at home, in the workplace or
when travelling, allowing you to stay in control while you
maintain a busy active lifestyle.
Emptying your bladder regularly by means of ISC will ensure
that your bladder is emptied completely each time, avoiding
residuals of urine, which may result in urinary infection and
subsequently reach the kidneys.
Regular complete emptying of the bladder by ISC can also
help to reduce leakage of urine and the need to go to the
toilet as often.
Key Features
The UltraSmooth Aqua® catheter with water sachet for
ISC has a special hydrophilic coating, which, when hydrated
by the water released from the water sachet, becomes highly
lubricated. In addition, the eyes or drainage holes at the end
of the catheter, have been heat polished in a way that ensures
absolute smoothness to prevent discomfort and potential
trauma in the tube leading into the bladder (urethra).
The catheter is sterile in its packaging and is intended for
single use only.
How to prepare and use your UltraSmoot
Step 1
1 Begin by washing your hands with
soap and warm water. Rinse and
dry thoroughly.
Step 2
Squeeze (or fold and squeeze) the
water sachet in the catheter pouch to
release the water, allowing it to soak the
catheter. The catheter must be left in
2 the water for at least 15 seconds for the
hydrophilic coating to become e ective.
Step 3
Peel open by inserting a nger into each
of the nger holes in the packaging and
pull apart.
Step 4
3 Use the self-adhesive pad to hang
the UltraSmooth Aqua® catheter
from a convenient surface if necessary.
Step 5
Adopt the best position for you to
catheterise, or as advised by your
healthcare professional. This could
4 be sitting, lying or standing.

Step 6
6 Remove the UltraSmooth Aqua®
catheter from its packaging, taking care
not to drop or contaminate it. Grasp the
green introducer grip and slide it down
over the lubricated catheter towards the
drainage eyes. The introducer grip will
help you to position the catheter ready
for insertion.
7 Step 7
Position the catheter at the opening of
the urethra while continuing to hold the
introducer grip.
Step 8
Insert the lubricated catheter gently
into the urethra (as advised by your
healthcare professional), moving the
9 green introducer grip, until urine begins
to ow. You can drain the urine directly
into the toilet, or into a drainage bag
if preferred. Holding your penis in an
upward direction will help to make
insertion into the bladder easier.
Step 9
When the bladder is completely empty
10 and the urine has stopped owing,
gently remove the UltraSmooth Aqua®
catheter and dispose of it in a waste bin.
Do not ush it down the toilet.
Step 10
Wash your hands again.
