Single-use catheters for
gentle catheterisation
with unique soft and
flexible tip
All iQ-CATHs have two functional zones
1 Rounded Tip (patented)
The tip of the iQ-CATH
consists of a soft, rounded
head that sits on top of
a highly bendable ‘neck’.
This combination allows the
catheter to pass through any
narrowings in the urethra
without resistance.
Smooth Eyelets
The catheter eyelets
are rounded to prevent
any injuries to the
sensitive tissue of the
urethral mucosa.
2 Guiding Zone
This part of the iQ-CATH,
which continues down to
the funnel, is made of a
comparatively stiffer material
thus making insertion easier.

Performing Intermittent Self-Catheterisation (ISC)
The guidelines in this booklet are to support the information you are given
by the nurse who teaches you how to perform ISC. Always follow the
instructions given to you by your nurse.
ISC Procedure Fig.1
● Try to empty your bladder naturally The correct position
before catheterising. for iQ-CATH insertion
● Follow the cleaning and Fig. 2
washing routine as outlined in
the hygiene section opposite.
● Lubricate your catheter (if needed)
as per manufacturer’s instructions.
● Pull back your foreskin (if you have
one) and hold your penis firmly
up towards your tummy with one
hand as shown in Fig.1.
● Insert your catheter with your
dominant hand and be careful not
to touch any part of the catheter
that is to enter the bladder.
● If you have an enlarged prostate,
you may feel some resistance as
your catheter reaches that point.
Lower the angle of the penis as in
Fig. 2, relax and continue to gently
insert the catheter. You could try
coughing as you insert the catheter
as this momentarily relaxes the
muscles surrounding the prostate
and bladder entrance.
● If this does not help and there is
continued resistance, withdraw the
catheter and try again a little later.

into position.
● Dispose of the used catheter and
any other used items in a disposal
bag and place in the general
household rubbish.
Hygiene
● ISC is a clean procedure not a sterile one (your catheter is sterile).
● One of the key benefits of performing ISC is that it is less
likely to lead to infection compared to an indwelling catheter,
but only if a good standard of personal hygiene is maintained.
● Remember to wash your hands before and after performing ISC.
● Normal soap and water are fine, but antibacterial hand gel may be
useful if you need to catheterise when out and about.
● Make sure that your penis is clean before self-catheterising too.
● Be careful not to touch anything else other than your catheter once
you have washed.
● If your catheter touches anything or you drop it, throw it away and
use a new one – DO NOT put yourself at risk of infection.

Do’s and Don’ts of performing ISC

Wash hands after procedure.
D rink an adequate amount of fluids daily – your healthcare professional
will advise you regarding the amount you should drink in any 24hr period.
If you are drinking the correct volumes of the right fluids, your urine will
be a light yellow/straw colour. You can use the chart below as a simple guide
to determine whether or not you are drinking enough of the right fliuds.
Target range – correct volumes of fluid
Dehydrated – increase your fluid intake
Severely dehydrated – MUST drink more

into the body) without the funnel. The size of the catheter refers to its external diameter indicated
in French gauge (CH) and millimetres. The funnel is coloured to code the respective size.
