OFFICE ICE BREAKERS

Here are some budget-friendly team
building activities, you can do with your
team to make stronger connections with
them.

32

BLIND DRAWING GAME

The game requires two people to sit
facing away from each other, where
one team member is given a picture of
an object or word. Without specifying
directly what it is, the other person must
describe the image without using words
that clearly give away the image.

33

HUMAN KNOT

Have your team gather in a circle.
Tell everyone to put their right hands in
the air and grab onto someone’s hand
across the circle.
Then tell them to link left hands with
someone else across the circle. See if
they can untangle themselves without
letting go of anyone’s hand.

34

SHOW AND TELL

Have your team bring in a prized
possession and let them tell a story.

35

BLIND RETRIEVER

Split your staff into small teams,
blindfolding one person on each team.
The first team that can successfully
direct their blindfolded colleague to a
hidden object, wins.

36

ACTIVE LISTENER

Schedule what your team thinks is
a routine meeting. Deliver a boring
speech filled with jargon, but sprinkle
random unrelated sentences in every so
often. Quiz your team to see who was
listening.

37

JIGSAW PUZZLE PIECES

Give different teams plastic bags with
puzzle pieces. Unbeknownst to them,
they’ll end up having to partner with
other teams to complete the puzzle.

38

BUILD BRIDGES, NOT WALLS

Two teams build separate halves of a bridge using
the materials provided. Once finished, they have to
work together to make the halves fit. A great game for
building collaboration and creativity skills.

How to play:

1. Grab items that can be used to build a bridge, such as
cardboard, Lego, building blocks, straws, paper, tape, rulers, etc.
2. Divide the participants into two equally sized teams. Separate
them into two different sections of the playing area such that they
can’t see what the other team is doing (use a sheet to make the
separation if you have to).
3. Ask each team to build one-half of a bridge. A team cannot see
what the other is doing. They can, however, communicate verbally
and exchange ideas about the bridge design.
4. Give the teams free access to whatever materials they need to
build the bridge.
5. Each team gets 10 minutes to come up with an idea and a
sketch for the bridge. They get an additional 30 minutes to build
the actual bridge. The teams can communicate verbally across the
room throughout this period.
6. After 30 minutes, ask the two teams to meet together and see
whether their bridges were actually similar or not.

Optional: If you have a larger group, you can make
this competitive by dividing the group into 2 (or more)
pairs of teams. The team-pair that gets closest to
building a complete bridge, wins.

39

PERFECT SQUARE

Another blindfold game where team
members have to work together to
create a perfect square with a rope
while completely blindfolded.

40

SHIPWRECKED

Your plane has just crashed on a
deserted island in the middle of the
Pacific. You have just a few minutes to
salvage some items from the wreckage
before the whole plane burns down.
What items will your team choose?

41

KNOW YOUR TEAM

Pair up the participants.

Give them the following directions: Stand face to face
with your partner. For 30 seconds concentrate on your
partner, noting clothing, hair style, glasses, etc. Turn
your back to each other and in the next 45 seconds
change three things about your appearance.

Now, turn and face each other. Identify those things
your partner has changed about him- or herself. After
approximately 2 minutes, have participants take their
seats. Then talk about the activity you just performed.

Hint: Remove your watch; take a shoe off.
