MESSAGE FROM

Sr. Managing Director, Southeast Asia, Korea, Hong Kong & Macau Varian Medical Systems

Dr. Kevin Lo, DHSc, MBA, MSc, MIET, FCIM, CMktr

Distinguished Organizing Committee Members, Honorable Speakers and fellow
Participants

Firstly, thank you for inviting me and I am honoured to be able to be part of this
first ever IGRT Head and Neck workshop where five of the largest academic
institutions in Malaysia have come together to host this event.

Cancer is one of the most complex diseases to manage from a clinical
perspective. That’s why the theme “Empowering the Future of Radiation Therapy
Together” resonates with me so much as I believe we have to work as one to
tackle the challenges we face to live in a world without fear of cancer.

As we know, the burden of cancer is rising globally and in Malaysia, new
cancer cases are set to increase to nearly 90,000 by 2040 – that’s almost a 50%
increase from where we were at in 2018.

Nasopharyngeal cancers are currently in the top five most common
cancers in Malaysia and are projected to increase by over 150% by 2040. We
need to ensure that patients have access to high quality and cost-effective cancer
treatment. And this is achievable.

Workshops such as these are crucial in the fight against cancer
because while the fundamentals of radiation oncology remain the same,
advances in technology and clinical solutions are revolutionizing the way that
radiotherapy is delivered and significantly improving patient outcomes and
experience.

At Varian, we strive for precision and accuracy in radiation therapy
treatments. For example, IGRT provides high resolution, 3D images to visualize
tumour sites during the course of treatment, allowing for better targeting with
advanced techniques such as IMRT and VMAT.

This workshop promises to establish a deep understanding of the
principles of IGRT and the sharing of knowledge from both local and international
participants. We at Varian are grateful to be part of this endeavor. Through these
types of events, we can all really make a change and clinical progress can be
made which will directly impact the lives of patients.

As we continue to innovate and equip you with advanced radiation
therapy technology in cancer care, we are confident that you, as the front-liners in
radiation treatment planning and delivery will continue to execute and deliver the
best form of treatments and services to all cancer patients out there.

I wish you a fruitful meeting and thank you once again.

MESSAGE FROM

Director of Allied Health Sciences Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia

Puan Hajah Farina binti Zulkernain

Distinguished Organizing Committee Members, Honorable Speakers and fellow
Participants

It is indeed an honor and a pleasure taking part in the opening of “IGRT Head
and Neck Workshop 2021” with the theme “Empowering the Future of Radiation
Therapy Together”. I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all our
speakers and participants, especially our overseas experts from the Netherlands,
Korea and Singapore.

The theme “Empowering the Future of Radiation Therapy Together” is
very apt and supportive of the Vision of the Ministry of Health which is “A Nation
Working Together for Better Health” as we know that the search for excellence
can seldom be achieved alone. This event is a collaborative effort of
academicians, oncologists, medical physicists and radiation therapists from the
higher learning institutions and various cancer treatment centers. I admire the
teamwork of the organizing committee in bringing together the experts in various
professions and the support by Varian Medical Systems in making this workshop
a great success.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality
worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that there were 14.1
million new cases and 8.2 million deaths annually. Like most developed and
advanced developing countries, Malaysia is experiencing an epidemiological
transition, where diseases related to lifestyle particularly cardiovascular diseases
and cancers have progressively become more prevalent. The trend of malignant
neoplasm in terms of absolute numbers has escalated and remains as one of the
five principal causes of national mortality for the past 20 years.

Head and neck cancer treatment is multifaceted and requires the
coordinated input of a range of clinical and allied health disciplines to deliver
treatment and support in a knowledge-based, effective and timely manner. There
is a need for better integration and collaboration across government and private
sectors as well as the non-governmental and professional organizations. Thus,
this workshop provides an excellent insight into the holistic multidisciplinary team
work in managing head and neck cancer and Allied Health Science Division
Ministry of Health Malaysia is committed in supporting such events.

I hope all of us will leverage on the workshop as a valuable platform to
share information and discuss new ideas especially in addressing the technical
and technological challenges ahead of us in managing head and neck cancer
planning and treatment in Malaysia. With that, I wish you a successful
conference and productive days ahead.
