Problems we still facing in SA
Learn about it
Our topic focuses on social expirience in education influenced Ivirn Illich
concept of deschooling and Dewey‘s contribution of social learning. I argue
that education takes place anywhere ecause sometimes school walls and
boundries brainwashes us or limits us. I AGREE
I agree because education takes place in a public space
In a positive social environment
In a conducive social experience
Through nurturing social interaction
From influential social context And with influential people
Social interaction
According to Corkiness. "Social interaction is such a process which influences
the overt behavior or state of mind of the individuals." (Farooq, 2014 )
I attended disability meetings and conferences to gain more knowledge and
not to be passively ignorant but learn as much as I can because one of my Prof
in my first year here at UJ taught me that the teacher is the lifelong learner
well, I guess I am and thanks to Prof Joseph De Beer (also author of becoming
a teacher).
Im also involved in para rowing (rowing for disabled people) Sport here at UJ
and
Im a library student assistance where I assist disabled students with
educational assistive device and software or information.
Social experience
Maslow believed that a “social experience is visiting a pub/bar with
your friends. It could be attending a conference or seminar and
interacting with people in a business setting. We know that social
interaction is important and people are tribal and need social
connections”. (Shaw, 2009). Social experience also takes place in
digital platforms e.g Social media
Social interaction in a specific social
context
Im the product of positive social expirience
Im standing in the shoulders of my teachers and lecturers,to name the few:-
Prof Yassim- Teaching Studies lecturer
Prof Van der huizen - ICT School Support lecturer
Dr Sedibe -LO teaching methodology lecturer
Mr Peter Oloba- Teaching Studies Tutor
Prof Sefotho – Educational Psychologist(advocate fnor inclusive Edu)
The correct question is...
How these people you mentioned influenced you?
My answer will be...They helped me create my safe social experience and
choose my social context to practise my social interaction

Moving along to Inclusive education
Living with the disability can teach a person ways to cope and find interesting things you may
enjoy doing. As a student-teacher who has access to technology I taught myself to be
independed from the government. We can’t expect the government to do everything for us.
Thus, I engaged into another form of social experience which in definite words is social
interaction. I started a company called Dawn Tutors It mostly runs online educational sessions. I
tutor and teach any subject from Grade 8-12, adults and beginners online. My specialist is
Language, Commercial subjects and Social studies. I’m honoured to call myself the young SA
entrepreneur to be. Sometimes I joke around and tell people that I’m the CEO and Founder of
an online class but it is true. I work at my own time and choose who I work with then get paid
for that.
University groomed me in a way that I see nothing impossible. As an ICT specialist I have
learned to create my own digital identity in attempts to pursue social interaction but I chose
educational path more than Social media. If you go to my social media page all you see is my
tutoring and teaching work nothing interesting really. Prof DVD (Van Der huisen) instilled that
attitude in my mind and I’m making money out of it. So my social interaction aims to influence
others behaviour and state of mind.
Question
Just look at Beethoven he was told that he will never be a singer because he was deaf. Well he became
a popular and influential singer...DID HE LISTEN?
• In your country do disabled students or learners have the opportunity to create positive
social interaction or there’s a bias believe that makes them isolate themselves from the
society or opt to be capitalists, if so, how do you combat discrimination?
Here in SA WE CALL SOMEONE WHO DESCRIMINATE against race RACE-
RACIST,SEX-SEXIST
HOW ABOUT DISABILITY-ABLELIST?
HOW ABOUT RELIGION-REALIST
• How politics and religion does influences social interaction in your country?
• How do you deal with Cyberbullying, identity theft or in schools especially discipline?
Ndividualism vs collectivism
Social context (setting, environment or
situation)
Is how someone reacts to something depending on their immediate social or physical
environment? Social context can influence how someone perceives something.
As a student living with disability I have learnt a lot about human nature and their behaviour I
studied Psychology for a simple reason: To understand human mind and behaviour
Never knowing that in few years along the run I’ll be the one drawing from Psychology theories to
keep going. You know, I was an able being 3 years ago running around the sports field for my
school as an athlete, clubbing, dancing and modelling. 3 years ago I was involved in the car
accident and everything changed.
My previous social context and social interaction
Clubbing, dancing, modelling and athletes including Social media(Facebook)
Now I understand social experience in a different way. I chose teaching t stand in front of the class
and all eyes are on me, everybody is listening to what I have to deliver. That is my passion. I still
love what I do but now with this disability I’m limited. I’m no longer sprinting to win a marathon for
my school or dancing I’m still rowing the boat seated to win for my Varsity.
Thus I created a different social community,Social expirience in a specific social context and I enjoy
the Sport.
Q•uestions
Do you have undeveloped areas?
Do you have learners coming from unprivileged families, how do you accommodate
or assist them in school or higher institution regarding basic needs.
UJ and other public schools feeding scheme
our constitution promotes the right to basic needs and education so learner do not
drop out of school or leave school because of their socioeconomy.
On one hand, other public township schools even have access to the internet and
computer labs, on the other, Quantile 5 schools have specialist who deal with any
type of disability, for instance, physiotherapist or psychologist but we don’t have
counsellors.
How about in your country? I hear that US schools have more counsellors than
police or securities and here we have more securities that counsellors what is your
take on that? Why is that?
Reality Vs Accessibility
Accessibility can be defined in many
words but I would like to define it as
having access to anything you
desire. The institution infrastructure
and many other schools around SA
are accessible even lecture halls,
we also have our own library and
educational assistive devices. We
have our own office that gives us
support and access to educational
needs. In here, I feel at home and
protected but the world is a different
place.
Question
• Do students living with disability have access to assistive devices, free
psychologies and how about the infrastructure of your school buildings?
• Are there any special schools for differently abled people or you now
promote inclusive education where anyone can attend any school?
However, my social experience regarding me being a student-teacher is slightly
different. In Private schools I have chosen to do my School experience practical
disability is still the taboo thing especially when you are a teacher. You are treated
differently not that I have had bad experience but I receive special treatment as if
they feel for me and I can see in their eyes questioning how and where do I get
the courage to stand in front of mean learners but make them to see me pass my
disability.
Other teachers will even ask why don’t I go to special school where there are
differently abled learners because I’m like them and they will relate with me then I
remind them that I wasn’t born disabled so I do belong here and wherever.
Social interaction : Teaching education?
SA does give sufficient ways to make the most out yourself regardless of the
background or disability you might have especially in education field. Our
constitution embraces equal opportunity and access for all in every sphere. So
topics such as racism do exist but as a diverse country we can tolerate
differences especially in subjects a socioeconomic, gender, language and
sexuality. Now we even have Unisex toilets. Who could have thought?
Access to information through lass conversation( social interaction)
My LO lecture Dr Sedibe over there, always engages with us about how the
world has evolved from her time till now, we usually speak about perception of
skin color(albinism),race differences, gays and lesbians (even their marriages
and relationships ) which was a taboo thing before 1994. However, what I have
learnt from these discussions is that the nation haven’t come full circled but we
tolerate.
So tolerance is acceptable thn doing away with negative attitude and
discrimination here. How is it in your country do teachers engage with learners
about these topics?
We also have organizations mananged by the government to
nurture youth to become entrepreneurs. No need to pay them
just attend sessions and learn business skills. The social
context I’m exposed to allowed me to even study digital
marketing online for free. It is of course a google free course
but the skills and knowledge I’m learning from google helps
me to grow my online business. According to my personal
experience the University institution does allow any student to
be exposed to various positive and conducive global and local
environment especially when you get/have free unlimited Wi-
Fi, what else can you do as a student?
I would like to say even the residence house that I’m living in
here at university cater any special need of the student and it
is conducive.
Question
• I would like to know how you accommodate students living with disability in
your country or higher educational institution?
• Are there any job or opportunities available?
• Does higher institutions cater them well and how about hospitality at higher
institution?
• Is there any means of social interaction such as free Wi-Fi at educational
institution or is it limited usage
• How is social interaction between different race, ethnicity or language in your
schools
• Do you have learning barriers such as language as a learning barriers (the
question is based on not all learners are English speakers in your country or
are they)
However, despite all the mentioned above we still have minor problems in
public schools such as the video that I’m about to play you now

Personal experience
However, my experience now as a differently abled student is
distressing I have been applying for NSFAS for 3 years now as a
student living with the disability but never received funding.
However, in 2016 I was using the same loan before the accident,
NSFAS 100% the loan paid for my fees, books, food and they even
asked me if I need accommodation which they will for but I said No I
like staying home. Now things are different as a differently abled
student I’m not getting education fund which makes me question the
paradigm of free education in SA.

Social experience
My social experience as a teacher is driven from my past and the
module called Psychology (life orientation).
I would like to start with Access to free education.
Here in SA learners living with the disability who just completed matric
have vast access to learnerships and most companies are
recommending the learner with disability. But note those are really not
good paying companies or jobs, for instance, call center or receptionist.
However, we are getting there slowly but shorty as other big companies
open their doors for differently abled people for example Coka Cola. I
actually have a friend who is living with the disability, studied HR and
got a SAB (The South African Breweries Limited) learnership.
Question and answer
My question to you?
•How did you or do you form social experiences?
• How do you deal he outcomes and dangers of being exposed to the
internet world
• Do you have under resourced schools in your country, Please Share?
• How does technology and social experience for learners fit in education?
• How do you motivate learners to keep safe social experiences and online
social interactions?
• Which majors are used in schools to prevent inappropriate browsing such
as usage of Facebook, does not having Facebook interferes with teaching-
learning
• Our SA constitution advocates that every learner must be computer
literate technology is not a nonessential skill but it’s a necessity, how about
in your country
Question
So I would like to know from your side
•How are differently abled teachers or student-teachers
treated during their school Prac?
•Are there any cases reported that placed a student-
teacher in danger?
•How do overall student-teachers treated at schools during
their School experience Practical, I would like to hear from
younger generation as well how they perceive teaching and
student teachers.
