The Tennessee State Social Action
Committee believes the state minimum
wage should be increased in order for all
families across the state to have a better
quality of life.
We support SB0550/HB0797, which as
introduced, increases, from $7.25 to $12, the
minimum hourly wage for employees within
the state.
Talking points to support SB0550/HB0797:
Low wages hurt all workers and are
particularly harmful to Black workers
and other workers of color, especially
women of color, who make up a
disproportionate share of workers who
are severely underpaid.
Minimum wage workers are fast food
workers, home care workers who care
for our elderly and disabled, people who
clean our offices and homes.
Due to inflation, the real value of the
current minimum wage is actually lower
than in 1968.
Because most low wage workers are
women, increasing the minimum wage
would also help close the gender wage
gap.
It is on the calendar of the Senate
Commerce and Labor Committee for
