Analytical Exposition Text
Analytical exposition text is one of argumentative

essays. It is an essay which analyze an issue or
situation. This kind of text elaborates the writer’s idea
about the phenomenon surrounding. In conclusion, an
analytical exposition is a text which evaluates a topic
critically, but focuses only on one side of an argument.
The argument and point of view have to be supported
by facts and relevant information. The thesis
statement has to be reiterated in the conclusion.

There are kinds of texts which belong to analytical
exposition as follows:

The following are the general structures of

analytical exposition:
a. Thesis (Statement of Position)

3) Therefore, my conclusion is that …

In summary, an analytical exposition should have
the following parts :

a. Introduction
The introductory paragraph is used to tell the
readers what topic you will be discussing. In your
introduction, you will also define the idea or issue
of the text that you wish to examine in your
analysis.

4

b. Body
It contains a series of arguments to convince the
readers. Each paragraph starts with a new
argument. Each paragraph has a main point,
reason and evidence. The issue is connected to
your argument. After stating the issue, present
your argument. Do not forget to support your
assumptions with examples and reasonable
judgement. Use valid research findings to support
your arguments. Defend your point of view, and
support it with pictures, graph, etc.
The following steps are how to write an argument.

Text Structure

Thesis Do you usually watch television with your

family? I believe that television can be good

for families. Here are some reasons.

Arguments First of all, television is inexpensive
entertainment for families to gather. The
families can sit in their living room while
chatting and watching television.
Second, television can be a good teacher. For
example, small children can learn many
things on children’s programs. In addition,
nature programs teach them about our earth
and how to care for it. Most important,
television lets children see a bigger picture of
the world than their own small neighborhood.
Our family cannot travel all over the globe, so
the news shows them views of other people
and places. The television also brings other
cultures into our home through special

children’s programs.

Reiteration In conclusion, there are still many benefits of
having television as well as parents are there
for keeping ours. Having a good time in
living-room with family will be enjoyable with
television as source of entertainment.

Language Features of Analytical Exposition

The following are language features of analytical
exposition:

1. Focus on generic human or non-human
participants.

2. Expression of stating opinion.

I believe, …
I think …
It is obvious …

3. Simple present tense.
Most analytical exposition use Simple present
tense.

7

4. Time connective.
When we are writing exposition, we will use time
connectives, such as first, second, third, finally,
begin with, next, lastly in our arguments because
they are useful to list ideas. They help us give a
structured view of what we are writing.

5. Causal conjunction, such as consequently,
therefore, based on the arguments.

6. Use of emotive words, for example terrible,
critical, amazed, disgusting etc to persuade
readers.

7. Use of mental verbs, for example think, decide,
consider, believe, etc

8. Use of persuasive technique, such as
generalizations to support the arguments,
evidence and facts, and exaggerations to make
things better or worse.

Besides the requirements above, there are still some
ways to write Analytical exposition.

➢ Be objective. Avoid using “I” too much.
➢ Do not use informal language.
➢ Avoid using “etc”
➢ Analysis does not mean retelling the story.

Analysis aims to explain how the writer makes us
see what he/she wants us to see, the text’s
themes, and your personal response to these.

EXERCISE

Choose the correct answer A, B, C, D E

Food waste is a very serious issue in the world. Most
people don’t realize how often they waste food and the
negative impacts it can have for food security, the
environment, and climate change. Therefore, in my
opinion, food waste is bad for some reasons.

First, food waste can cause climate change. When
thrown into landfill, food waste produces a large
amount of methane. As food rots and degrades, it
emits these harmful gases. These gases are more
harmful than carbon dioxide in terms of trapping in
the atmosphere.

Second, food waste represents a great waste of
freshwater and ground water resources. We use a lot
of water when producing food. If we throw away food,
we were wasting water.

Lastly, food waste has an effect on society. While
we were throwing food out, many people around the
world have limited access to food. Wasting food raises
social questions, particularly given the current global
financial crisis, rising food prices and international
food shortages.

From those reason, it can be concluded that
wasting food has negative impacts on climate, water,
and society.
