About the Wine Maker

Growing up in California’s Sierra
Mountains Region, Scott developed a keen
interest in winemaking as a high school
exchange student in the Rhineland Pfalz
region of Germany. Scott attended
California State University at Sacramento
before beginning practical Enology training at
Montevina Winery in Amador County. Back to
Germany in 1975, he apprenticed at
K. Fitz-Ritter Winery while attending the
Weinbau Schule in Neustadt. Once again
returning to Montevina Winery, Scott focused
on all aspects of winemaking and running a
winery. From farming the grapes to effectively
marketing the wine, Scott solidified his knowledge and experience. In 1978, at
the age of twenty-three, Scott took over as Head Winemaker for Story
Winery, also in Amador County.
In 1979 Scott developed an ambitious winery plan for the Santino family. As
Winemaker and General Manager of Santino Winery, Scott is credited with
placing Amador County firmly on the California wine map. Crafting the best
wines possible from the soils and climatic conditions of the
region, Santino and later Renwood benefited from Scott’s German training
and innovative style. Becoming one of the leading wineries in Amador
County, and garnering critical acclaim, the wine world was paying
attention. Amador County was now recognized as a world-class wine-growing
appellation.
In 1996, Scott was recruited as Partner, Winemaker & President for newly
purchased, Folie a Deux Winery in Napa Valley. Combining forces with Lead
Partner, renowned Winemaker, Richard Peterson, Ph.D, a
formidable winemaking team was launched. Scott pursued his
commitment to award-winning Cabernets made from the Estate Vineyards in
Napa Valley while continuing his passion for Amador County Zinfandel.
Access to Scott’s original Grandpère vineyard in Amador County and close
relationships with premier Amador County growers, resulted in award-winning
wines all around for Folie a Deux. In addition, Scott’s creation, the “Menage a
Trois” line of wines, was an instant commercial success. In 2004, Folie a
Deux, now a respected brand, was sold to Sutter Home/Trinchero Winery.
Scott was finally positioned and ready to start his own venture, and he had
the ideal partner – his wife, Jana, a wine industry veteran.
Today, Scott Harvey Wines has a tasting room located in the historic town of
Sutter Creek, CA and a winery and tasting room in the heart of the
Shenandoah Valley of Plymouth, CA. Both locations offer an inviting, friendly
and fun atmosphere while you sip a variety of Scott Harvey Wines, Jana
Winery wines and Superhero Wines.

History of The Harvey Vineyard
“Vineyard 1869”

The Harvey Vineyard, America’s oldest Zinfandel Vineyard, is
documented as existing in 1869. “Vineyard 1869” was planted in the days
when horses were used for cultivation. This ancient vineyard is non-
irrigated, stand alone head pruned vines that fully express the Amador
Zinfandel terroir. For nearly 150 years, these ancient vines have plunged
their roots through twenty-five feet of multiple soil types in search of water.
The result is an elegant, complex, first-growth wine.

Vineyard 1869's existence was noted in a deed from an 1869 U.S.
Geological Survey, making it America's oldest documented
Zinfandel vineyard. The immigrants who planted these vines chose them
from hardy stock. In the 1890's the vines survived the nearly total
destruction of California's vineyards by phylloxera. Due to moon-lit nights
of unregulated distillation, Vineyard 1869 also survived Prohibition. It
wasn't until 1984 when the vineyard was purchased by Scott Harvey (now
owned by Terry Harvey), a German-trained, California winemaker, that the
vines were lovingly coaxed back into producing small yields of high
quality, first-growth Zinfandel. It is now coveted for producing California's
premier Old Vine Zinfandel.

2016 California State Fair Vineyard of the Year
“Vineyard 1869”

Each year, the California State Fair recognizes accomplishments and
services of key individuals and organizations as they pertain to
agriculture and technology. In 2016, a vineyard that has been a part of
making California history for nearly 150 years was awarded the
prestigious “Vineyard of the Year” honor. That vineyard is Amador
County’s very own “Vineyard 1869/Original Grandpere Vineyard”.
This small 10-acre vineyard is nestled back off Steiner Road in Plymouth,
CA, and has survived through the California Gold Rush, Prohibition, the
Stock Market Crash, the Great Depression, both World Wars, recessions
and housing crises, deaths and divorces and of course the dreaded
phylloxera epidemic.
Planted, managed and owned by Mahala Teter Upton up until the 1930’s,
the vineyard was then sold to the Steiner family who held on to it for
nearly 40 years. In 1970, they sold the vineyard to John & Virginia
Downing, who had been the longtime caretakers of the vineyard. In the
late 1970’s, the vineyard had hit a low point and the Downing’s were
ready to retire. By this time the vineyard had dwindled down from 16 to
10 acres. In 1988, Scott Harvey and his first wife Terri purchased the
vineyard outright, although they had managed, maintained and cared for it
since 1984.

2016 California State Fair Vineyard of the Year
“Vineyard 1869” cont...

From the late 1980’s and on, the politics, relationships and business
workings get…well…”complicated”. You can read more about the history
of this vineyard (as well as some juicy and “complicated”
details) in Randy Caparoso’s article, “The Original Grandpere Vineyard:
Powerful Women, Grapes and Wines.” (Originally published in April 2015
for the Amador Four Fires).
Today, the vineyard is owned, managed and maintained by Terri
Harvey. Using equipment exclusive to the vineyard, Terri prunes each
plant by hand and very rarely affords outsiders access to the vineyard to
help prevent damage and minimize pests that might hitch a ride. Since
the beginning, this vineyard has produced tiny, fist-sized clusters, barely
adding up to 1.5 to 2 tons per acre. This non-irrigated vineyard has roots
that burrow down over 25 feet in search of water. All this hard work for
hydration keeps the berries small and full-flavored, as Scott says,
“extractive and multidimensional”.
Wines produced from grapes from Vineyard 1869/The Original Grandpere
are not like other Zinfandels from Amador County. These small-
production wines are not known for being “big, bold and in your face”, but
rather they are seductive, lean and exotic. Their aromas and flavors
comingle and change, and with each sip, you’ll find something new.
So just where can you find wines produced from grapes from
Vineyard 1869/The Original Grandpere Vineyard? Currently, Terri sells
the grapes to just four wine producers; three in Amador
County and one in Lodi. Vino Noceto (Amador County) simply calls theirs
“OGP”, Andis Wines (Amador County) spells it out and calls theirs
“Original Grandpere Zinfandel”, Macchia Wines (Lodi), tagged theirs
“Prestigious” and then there’s our very own Scott Harvey (Amador
County), Vineyard 1869 Zinfandel.

This is the taste of history!

Winemaker/Tasting Notes: Produced in the old world
style of balanced wine making. We want the wine to
express the Amador Zinfandel terroir with a good balance
of fruit, French oak, structural tannins and medium
alcohol. The wine is made in the California Claret style
reminiscent of the balanced Zinfandels produced back in
the 60’s and 70’s. Briary varietal layered Zinfandel with
flavors of blackberry, fig, pomegranate, violets and a
balanced, fleshy center with hints of coffee and bright
currants. Old Vine complexity with first growth quality.

Dukkah-Crusted Pork Chops

with Mashed Potatoes and Lemony Greens

An Egyptian spice blend, dukkah, is a mix of almonds, sesame seeds, coriander, and
cumin. While traditionally used as a dipping sauce with bread and olive oil, we’re
using it to top tender pork chops to create a nutty and flavorful crust. Creamy mashed
potatoes and a spicy, tangy arugula salad complement the flavors and texture of the
pork. (Courtesy of Hello Fresh)
Makes 2 servings Prep & Cook Time: 35-45 minutes
INGREDIENTS
2 six ounce boneless pork chops
12 oz. Yukon potatoes
2 oz. arugula
2 cloves garlic
1 lemon
1/4 oz. mint
1/4 oz. parsley
3 tbsp. dukkah (Egyptian spice blend)
3 tbsp. sour cream
1/2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. olive oil
Salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS
1) Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Mince or grate the garlic. Zest and halve the
lemon. Pick the mint leaves from the stems. Finely chop both the mint and parsley.
Cut the potatoes into 1-inch cubes. Place in a medium pot with a large pinch of salt
and enough water to cover them. Bring to a boil and cook about 15 minutes, until fork-
tender. Drain and return to the same pot.
2) In a small bowl, combine the mint, parsley, garlic, lemon zest, dukkah, and
1 table spoon oil. Season with salt and pepper.
3) Season the pork chops on all sides with salt and pepper. Place on a lightly oiled
baking sheet, and top with an even layer of the dukkah rub. Place in the oven for
12-15 minutes, until the pork is cooked through.
4) Mash the drained potatoes with a fork or potato masher until smooth. Mix in sour
cream, butter, a drizzle of oil, and a large pinch of salt and pepper. Cover to keep
warm.
5) Toss the arugula in a medium bowl with a drizzle of oil, a squeeze of lemon, and a
pinch of salt and pepper.
6) Serve the dukkah-crusted pork chops on a bed of mashed potatoes alongside the
lemony greens. Enjoy!
