A Long-Term
Climate Change
TE CHANGE
The global response to Covid-19 — cancelled flights, CLIMA US
shutdowns of factories and power stations, a panicked VIR
mandate to enable remote work — will certainly bring
a dip in carbon emissions. However, this is not a silver COVID-19
lining for the climate, said United Nations (UN)
Environment Programme Executive Director Ms Inger
Andersen. Such changes are but temporary. When the
economy recovers, there will be an increase in emissions
as people scramble to make up for time lost. UN
Secretary-General Mr Antonio Guterres concurred and
noted that the threat from coronavirus is temporary
whereas the threat from heat waves, floods and extreme
storms resulting in the loss of human life will remain
with us for years.

Our response to this pandemic will shape the climate
crisis for decades to come because climate change will
continue to threaten humanity long after Covid-19
ends. Efforts to revive economic activity doesn’t mean
that green objectives should be cast aside. Nor does it
mean that our response should be temporarily fixed
towards the battle of Covid-19 without considering the
long-term damage of climate change. Dr Surina Ismail,
Group Head of Sustainability of IOI Corporation
Berhad said: “Personally, we can take responsibilities
for our own actions” as she stressed the importance of
climate change in a Q & A session. The collective actions
of our colleagues in IOI too are dedicated to reverberate
across our planet for a long time. Turn to page 8 and 9

In 2020, we are now looking to align our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction

social well-being and health of our employees and families as well as that of the
wider communities are intertwined closely with our planet’s resources and environment
and ultimately defines our prosperity in this one world”. This vision is in line with our
sustainability philosophy of People, Planet, Prosperity plus Partnership and our embrace of
the UN SDGs, specifically UN SDG 13 on Climate Action.
Thus, the next step is for IOI to take a holistic approach in implementing its CCAI and
IOI’s strategy is developed around the following commitments:
a. To reduce our climate change impact by setting long-term target to reduce GHG

emission.
b. To promote climate action plan and practices through innovation, improved

efficiency and support actions throughout the operations.
c. To increase the resilience of our business by managing risks and opportunities,

forecasting climate scenarios for climate impact valuation and incorporating circular
economy.

Q What are some of the challenges that IOI is facing with regards to Climate Change?
A The challenges are many and varied. Being an agricultural-based company,

integration of climate change considerations into our corporate strategies can reshape
the way we conduct our business. Some of the challenges faced include developing or
adopting new technologies to reduce GHG emission, becoming more energy-efficient in
our operations to reduce our carbon footprint, facing higher risks in relation to climate
change due to droughts, extremes in weather patterns, etc., including increasing legal and
regulatory pressures.

Ultimately, the balance of costs and opportunities will depend on a variety of factors,
including sector specificities, government policies and our ability to engage our suppliers
and customers in addressing the climate change challenges.

A Personally, we can take responsibilities for our own actions. We can ensure we reduce
wastage in our daily lives such as in our water usage, food consumption, energy
usage; recycle as much as we can which can include paper, clothing, cans, bottles, etc.;
instead of using plastic containers, straws or bags, use alternative materials that are not
one-time usage and are biodegradable; help green the environment by planting more
trees and create simple eco-systems by nurturing flowering plants and creating gardens;
and finally, to educate our future generations on the importance of taking care of our
environment and guide them by example on these very simple steps, so that they can
appreciate what we have so far taken for granted.

Q Personally, what are your hopes in the face of climate change?
A I am by nature a very optimistic person. I believe that, when faced with an existential

threat, the human condition, i.e. the characteristics of human existence including
experience and behaviour, will prevail. My only concern is that we do not wait too long
to realise this before it is too late.
Looking at how the world reacted facing the Covid-19 threat, I believe that with enough
evidence (actual or scientific) and more importantly, enough will by the masses, we can
mitigate the problems of climate change.

communication in her Developing Effective Workplace
Communication Skills workshop on 16 March 2020. It is easier
being a speaker than it is being a listener because no matter how
good a speaker elaborates a message, it is the listener’s job to
understand the message as the message sent is never identical to the
message received. Effective communication is about more than just
exchanging information. Plain language, when combined with other
