PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Victoria S. Mayle CPPO, CPPB,
St Mary’s County
Welcome, everyone, to the 64th Annual ASBO MD&DC Spring Conference in
beautiful Ocean City. A tremendous amount of work has gone into making this the
most valuable professional development yet and I want to thank the hard-working
members of the Conference Arrangements, Exhibits, Professional Development,
and Technology Planning and Development Committees who make this conference
happen. That this event is powered by volunteers is amazing!
Our theme, Change as Opportunity, is evident in the many changes to this year’s conference. For the
first time, you will enjoy a mobile app that allows you to view all of the information about the
conference, set your own schedule, receive information about program changes, network with your
colleagues, post photos, and generally add another level of value to your conference experience.
You’ve had a choice of great hotels and been able to reserve rooms yourself. Twenty-five members
were awarded full scholarships to attend the conference. The business meetings, two exciting Keynote
Speakers, and Student Performers will be in the beautiful, new Performing Arts Center at the Ocean
City Convention Center, and the Sunday Welcome Gala has relocated to the new Ballroom at the
Conference Hotel, the Oceanfront Holiday Inn on 67th Street. And there are 47 education sessions,
plus a great Wednesday breakfast session featuring one of our Keynote Speakers. And a food tasting
of new products for our Food and Nutrition Services members. And a fiery demonstration of the value
of fire retardant seats on our school buses. Talk about change!
The last year has been an exciting one as ASBO continues to grow:
Our membership at the school district level has increased 109% over the last three years as
more and more school business officials realize the value and inexpensiveness of the
professional development that your association offers.
Over 225 attended the Fall Conference at the Maritime Institute and were energized by Dr.
Kevin Snyder’s keynote on Thinking Differently – Viewing Change as a Catalyst for Growth.
Attendance at the Foundations of School Business Management classes has grown as more
members pursue the new ASBO Certification program.
The ASBO website is maturing, and more and more information, archived material, and
educational opportunities are made available.
More members are availing themselves of the on-line Wilkes University Masters of School
Business Leadership program.
There is the first ASBO Strategic Partnership - American Fidelity Assurance, a leader in
interpreting the Affordable Care Act and a presenter of three workshops on that topic.
Successful support of legislation that creates a new Commission to examine school funding
adequacy, funding of early childhood education, and a variety of other topics, and ASBO has
a representative on the Commission!
The ASBO Strategic Plan has been updated and we will be reviewing its implementation each
year.
The upcoming year will be an exciting one as ASBO offers workshops in all eight areas of
school business.

Brice and Shirley Phillips Best Practice Award
The Brice and Shirley Phillips Best Practice Award is designed to recognize outstanding
business practices and new ideas that result in significant contributions to schools or the
profession of school business management, and can be replicated by other school
business officials. The award bears the names of two long-time ASBO supporters and
business partners who were innovators in their own right and were instrumental in giving ASBO
its first exhibits opportunity at the Spring Conference.
If you have a new practice in your school system, look for more details at asbo.org and
share your ideas with your peers. You could be the recipient of a very valuable prize!

long standing tradition of musical excellence.
While their programs focus on music of the
Renaissance, the Peace Pipers sing a challenging
and diverse repertoire, covering many genres
around the world. One of five choral ensembles at
Chopticon High School, the Peace Pipers work to
develop advanced musicianship, excellent vocal
technique, and expressive performances, with a

in lieu of ticket sales, our audiences are asked to donate to a local charity. Each season, the CHS Choirs
select organizations they are passionate about and have donated over a thousand dollars in the last four
years alone.
