St. Peter AME Souvenir Journal 176 Years of Grace

September 9-10 2023 Pastor Keith D. & 1st Lady Dr. Emma Campbell Cornelius Souvenir Journal 1847 ♰ 2023

A Message From September 9, 2023 Greetings in the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Dear Members of St. Peter AME Church, It is with great joy and admiration that I am writing to you today under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. St. Peter AME Church is celebrating 176 years of serving the Lord and working in God's Kingdom. We give thanks to the Lord for his grace in preserving for Himself a church where God's word, praise and worship have become the catalyst for praising God's holy name. We acknowledge and give thanks to the Lord, for we know that it is only by His grace and faithfulness that the church continues to strive and persevere through challenging times. As we celebrate this milestone of achievement, let us not forget the many blessings that God has bestowed upon us during these 176 years of existence. Let's not forgot that being obedient to God is the only answer to our continual growth and success. As the scripture declares in Deuteronomy 28:1, "If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commandments I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth." May the Lord continue to bless St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church as we strive by God's grace and mercy to bring glory to God's name in our worship and continue in the task of making and growing disciples through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are positioned for greatness as God has surrounded us with his blessings. As we continue in the years to come, let us not forget that it was the Lord that has brought us this far. Humbly Submitted, Rev. Keith D. Cornelius, Senior Pastor Dr. Emma Campbell-Cornelius, First Lady St. Peter AME 176th Church Anniversary 1847 ✞ 2023

St. Peter AME 176th Church Anniversary 1847 ✞ 2023 Sixteen years after the death of the Rt. Rev. Richard Allen, the Founding Father and first elected and consecrated Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, St. Peter Chapel, St. Louis was established. The history of our Zion began in 1847, when a small group of people living in North St. Louis, who had been attending what was then St. Paul Chapel A.M.E. Church, decided to look for a place of worship in the area where they lived. Under the leadership of their first pastor, The Rev. Spottswood Rice, they first met at the home of Mrs. Jane Turner, to begin organizing the second African Methodist Episcopal Church west of the Mississippi River. A building on a lot 52 ½ feet by 103 ½ was secured from a Mr. Peortner, on the southwest corner of Elliot and Montgomery Street. One room was used for services and the other for a parsonage. A church was finally erected on the site in 1866. About the time of its completion, it was destroyed by a storm. The congregation was forced to worship in a feed and grain store on Jefferson Avenue, between Montgomery and Warren Streets. The church was rebuilt and destroyed a second time by a storm. The members held services in Number Five School (later known as Banneker and Montgomery Schools) until they could build again. In 1871, the church name was listed for the very first time in the St. Louis Directory as ST. PETER CHAPEL (Colored)- West side Elloit av nr Conde. Finally, the church was relocated to Elliot and Montgomery, and a much larger edifice was built. In 1927, the church was destroyed a third time by a great tornado. The structure had been completely unroofed. This time, many of the members had become discouraged and went to other A.M.E. churches in the St. Louis area. But the faithful, who had remained through the years, decided to take upon themselves, with God’s help, the great task of St. Peter Church. Following the annual conference of 1927, at which time Rev. Floyd Grand Snelson was assigned to St. Peter, Bishop A. J. Carey, Presiding Elder C. W. Newton, Pastor Snelson, and the members of St. Peter met in a church conference and decided to move the church to a new location. The Bishop’s assurance of influential support, as well as his consent for a loan on the old property or its sale in a deal for a new church, carried much weight. After considering several pieces of property, the congregation chose a building at 2801 Gamble Street. This building was secured with the aid of a $1,000.00 loan from the A.M.E. Church Board of Church Extension. The name of the church was then changed to St. Peter Community Center. In the fall of 1928, at the annual conference, the Bishop saw fit to appoint The Rev. J. C. Brewster as pastor of St. Peter’s. A month later, the membership was informed that the indebtedness of the church totaled $20,000.00, and that the church was threatened with foreclosure unless $250.00 was paid within three days. It soon became apparent that even if payment was made, the church building would still be lost. After much consideration, they decided to give up the property and return to the original site at Montgomery and Elliot to rebuild. St. Peter AME 176th Church Anniversary 1847 ✞ 2023 From that time to 1934, the church moved from one place to another. Services were sometimes held in a house at 2508 N. Leffingwell, the YWCA at Lucas and Garrison, and sometimes in a rented tent at Leffingwell and Benton Streets. When the Rev. Jessie L. Boyd became pastor, his heart’s desire was to erect a suitable church. He worked tirelessly on the building along with the men of the church. He did quite a bit of the work himself. The ladies of the congregation furnished hot meals and coffee for the workers and helped in every way possible. Special prayers were offered for the success of the venture, and when things looked darkest, Thomas Hubbard, son of one of the charter members of the church, made a loan to the Trustees, enabling them to complete the work. That edifice still stands to this day. St. Peter has always boasted of having some of the finest ministers from throughout the connection. Some names are remembered by a few. Some were known only by their last names, but they served St. Peter church well. The following are the names of the former pastors of St. Peter A.M.E. Church: Spottswood Rice, J. I. Lowe, Hawkins, Dove, Preston, Alexander, Duke, Dickson, Madison, Watson, Steward, Beale, Thurman, C. N. Douglas, R. L. Phillips, A. J. Russell, Martin, S. S. Pitcher, Roscoe Henderson, C. W. Newton, Riley, Bean, J. L. Williams, M. M. Matthews, G. E. Horsey, H. L. Vaughn, F. L. Whitlock, H. C. Cummings, and the following pastors: § In 1953, The Rev. Grady Brown was assigned to St. Peter. Under his pastorate, much progress was made in the organization of the church. Plans were made to purchase a new building for St. Peter. It was under his leadership that the actual search for a new church site began. § The Rev. James. H. Oxley moved the church in 1962, to its current location at the corner of Margaretta and Shreve. The building had adequate facilities to conduct more enriched programs. During the administration of The Rev. Oxley, there was a great deal of progress. § The church continued to grow, and in 1966, The Rev. C. Garnett Henning was assigned to St. Peter. Rev. Henning was concerned about the social issues of the country and how we as Christians can be effective in helping to eliminate some of the social ills of that time. § Under the leadership of the Rev. Calvin McMillian and The Rev. Harry S. Davis, the mortgage was paid off in November 1974. The official burning of the mortgage was officiated by The Rt. Rev. Harrison J. Bryant, Presiding Bishop of the Fifth Episcopal District, on May 11, 1975. § The Rev. Cyrus S. Keller was assigned to St. Peter in 1976. He continued to move the church forward. The sanctuary and parish hall were air-conditioned and the ladies’ and men’s lounges were renovated. In the sanctuary, the pews were covered and fence cushions were placed at the chancel rail. At the 133rd Anniversary, November 1, 1980, a motorcade processed to the old church site at Elliot and Montgomery, where the cornerstone was removed and placed in our present building. St. Peter AME 176th Church Anniversary 1847 ✞ 2023 § The Rev. J. R. Williams became pastor in 1982. Rev. Williams’ leadership organized the J. R. Williams Nursing Unit. The N.E.W. Missions was also founded. Rev. Williams possessed great musical talent and helped the church acquire a new organ and piano. The kitchen and educational building were renovated, and a new roof was added. § In October 1984, The Rev. Norman Copeland became the pastor of St. Peter’s. The theme of his ministry was “Celebration of Life.” The church became alive, and an awakening spirit moved within the people. The renovation of the parsonage was completed and the Inspiration Choir was organized under his leadership. § The Rev. Cheviene Jones, another musical talent, was assigned in November of 1985. His theme was “A Christian in My Heart.” His love of music helped the Inspiration Choir to grow immensely. The church membership continued to grow. § In October of 1988, the Rev. William Franklin Dancy was assigned. Rev. Dancy was a spiritual, dynamic force in making much needed renovations to the edifice. The lower level of the church, now known as Dancy Hall, was renovated to conduct classes and promote the church’s outreach ministry. The church became more involved in the community with the development of Project Home Again, Faith House, and involvement in Congregations Allied for Community Improvement (CACI). During the 1991-1992 conference year, two parking lots were acquired to accommodate the growing membership. § The Rev. Sylvester Laudermill, Jr. came to St. Peter from Southern California in November of 1994. Under the capable and dynamic leadership of Pastor Laudermill, the membership was able to purchase and fully furnish a manse, complete renovation of the rooms in the Educational Building, install a disability lift, purchase a new van, install new air conditioning units and furnaces for the Sanctuary and Educational Building, fully renovate and furnish the Sanctuary and Dancy Hall, and purchase a new organ in memory of Eva Bolar Fisher. Under his administration, full Health, Dental, and Social Security benefits were offered of all employees of the Church. § The Rev. Anthony S. Steele was assigned to St. Peter in 2004 to carry on the legend of the “First Church in the Conference.” Rev. Steele had a deep concern for families and relationships. He established a Singles Ministry. On the “National Black Marriage Day,” over thirty couples renewed their vows. Ground Zero was also initiated under Rev. Steele. This ministry was designed for young adults. Persons joining the church in their 20’s and 30’s were assigned a Mentor (Class Leader) and a Sponsor (someone from Ground Zero) to help integrate them in the life of the church. § In 2007, the innovative move of Bishop John Bryant was to assign the first female pastor to St. Peter A.M.E. Church by the name of Rev. Brenda J. Hayes, “From “Renovation to Innovation.” Pastor Hayes may be described as the one who walks softly but carries a big stick (Prayer). Her sincere prayerful disposition has provided both spiritual and financial growth for the church. Her deliberate deliverance of the Word is stimulating and encouraging. Throughout the District, she is known as a great teacher. This is evident by the growth of our Mid-Week Noon Bible Study. This class has grown 150%. There are as many members from the community in attendance as there are from the church… and they keep coming….She Rebuilt the Wall! St. Peter AME 176th Church Anniversary 1847 ✞ 2023 § The Rev. Joseph C. Nixon was assigned to St. Peter by Bishop T. Larry Kirkland in October 2012. St. Peter AME Church membership hosted the 159th Session of the Missouri Annual Conference, in October 2013. September 5-7, the Women’s Ministry hosted a Women’s Retreat: Women Moving to Another Place in God…A Place Called NEXT!” § The Rev. Steven D. Shepard, Sr., was appointed as the proud pastor of St. Peter in November 2014, where he provided nurturing, spiritual pastoral leadership. In the community, Pastor Shepard viewed himself as a behind the scenes person. He set up a faith-based partnership with Hickey Elementary School. Under his pastoral care, our Promotion/Graduation Sunday was a huge success, recognizing over 30 children, youth and adults. Several special days were observed: we recognized our veterans on Memorial Day weekend, celebrated the women of St. Peter during Woman’s History Month, and had a special service recognizing our men during Black Lives Matter Sunday. St. Peter hosted the St. Louis-Cape Girardeau District Conference. A Men’s Prayer Breakfast was incorporated and St. Peter participated in our first Easter Egg Hunt, in conjunction with St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, another church in our community. Our Children’s Choir began singing again during worship service. During the month of September, we celebrated our 168th Church Anniversary with tag-team preaching by dynamic, spirit-filled preachers from the St. Louis metropolitan area. § The energetic Reverend LeSean Tarkington was appointed Pastor in 2020. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, for several months, members were unable to worship in person. He implemented a Hybrid Worship service via Zoom and a conference call-in line so members could worship virtually. This allowed members to stay connected and fed spiritually. Attendance was extremely high for these services. His Supernatural Manifestation weekly prayer service was extremely popular and drew members throughout the community. Other highlights under his leadership include: The renovation of the Sanctuary and Dancy Hall, Community Town Hall Meetings, Senior Drive by Caravans, Resurrection Revival, Praise in the Parking Lot and a Red Carpet 175th Church Anniversary Celebration. § Today, our congregation is led by Reverend Keith Cornelius, appointed by Bishop Clement Fugh, in October 2022.. He is a teaching pastor and his foundation of leadership is a church where God’s Word, Praise and Worship are the catalyst for praising God’s Name. The theme for the Church is to Rebuild, Reshape and Refocus in the Spirit of Hope. Pastor Cornelius strongly believes in helping others pursue excellence. Highlights of the 2022- 2023 Conference Year under his strong and faithful leadership include: members returning to Church after the pandemic, the 2023 Pew Rally, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day celebrations, Women's and Men's Day Worship Service, 4th Sunday Fellowship, online Weekly Prayer and Communion service and Weekly Bible Study, which he faithfully leads. A new air conditioning and heating is currently underway. The members of St. Peter will also celebrate their 176 Years of Grace Church Anniversary with a gala event. To God be the Glory! From Mrs. Jane Turner’s house in 1847 to 4730 Margaretta Avenue in 2023, St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church continues to “Give God All the Glory!” History of St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church ♰ 1847 ♰ 2023 Saint Louis, Missouri

St. Peter AME 176th Church Anniversary 1847 ✞ 2023 Rev. Lee Clayton Goodman was educated in the St. Louis Public School system. He matriculated through Lincoln University (Jefferson City, MO) where he received the Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and the Master of Arts degree in Political Science. He is a graduate of the Howard University School of Law (Washington, DC) and obtained the Master of Divinity Degree from the Eden Theological Seminary (Webster Groves, Missouri). Rev. Goodman was first licensed to preach at The Messiah’s Tabernacle in the Walnut Park Neighborhood of North St. Louis, under the leadership of the Rev. A. Ross Fowler, in April of 1993. After meeting the woman who would become his wife, he transferred his membership to St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Sylvester Laudermill, Jr. While at St. Peter, he was licensed to preach by Presiding Elder O’Neal Hayes Brown and subsequently ordained as an Itinerate Deacon and later, Itinerate Elder. In October 2000, Bishop John R. Bryant appointed Rev. Goodman to his first pastoral charge at Buren Chapel AME Church in Herculaneum, MO. While at Buren Chapel, Rev. Goodman was instrumental in the efforts of many of his congregants receiving financial settlements when a lead smelter contaminated the community. Rev. Goodman subsequently founded the Imani AME Church in Overland, MO, where he served for ten years, until Bishop T. Larry Kirkland transferred him to the St. John AME Church on the Kings Highway. He served St. John for 8 years, until Bishop Clement W. Fugh appointed him Presiding Elder of the St. Louis-Columbia District of the Missouri Conference of the AME Church. Rev. Goodman is the past president of the AME Ministerial Alliance, former Dean of the Missouri Conference Board of Examiners and past president of the Mound City Bar Association, the oldest association of African American lawyers west of the Mississippi. Under his leadership, the Association filed suit against the St. Louis Board of Elections in the wake of the 2000 Elections. As a result of this suit, voters in the City of St. Louis are now allowed to submit a provisional ballot when they cannot provide proper identification - rather than be turned away from the polls. In September 2015, after the tumultuous events in the City of Ferguson, Missouri (after the shooting of Michael Brown), Rev. Goodman was appointed the city’s first Prosecutor of color. In addition to his duties as Presiding Elder, Rev. Goodman currently serves as Legal Counsel and Chief of Staff to the License Collector of the City of St. Louis. Rev. Goodman is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and recently celebrated 26 years of marriage to the former Phyllis Rogers. They have two daughters, Nia Imani and Tia Noni.
