Against the clock

Back in May some of our colleagues
competed in the Drilling and Tapping
Championships at the Utility Week
Live event.

The competition sees two contestants, one of whom Mother and daughter duo, Lesley and Kayleigh Barratt
must be connected to the water industry and either
employed by a water company or contract partners, Kayleigh Barratt connecting service pipe, while mum Lesley waits to
compete against the clock to drill and tap a 150mm turn on stop tap
diameter ductile iron main under available pressure,
together with the installation of a simulated service
connection.

An impressive 16 teams entered the competition this
year, including our very own mother and daughter duo,
Lesley and Kayleigh Barratt. We’re pleased to say that
they came first in the ladies’ competition, winning the
chance to represent both the Clancy Group and the
UK in Amsterdam next year, with a best time of four
minutes 32 seconds! Our men’s team, Aston Elsey and
Steve Mason, who were entering for the first time, won
the ‘Best Newcomers’ award and we also won the ‘Best
Contractors’ team award, (combined ladies and mens
teams) with a time of three minutes 57 seconds.

The teams trained hard prior to the event, working in
collaboration with our partnership team entry from
Anglian Water, and supporting each other throughout
their preparation for the challenge. Congratulations!

Our streetworks team heads back to school

Clancy Docwra’s streetworks team are taking
their latest project on the road, to highlight
the importance of street management during
road works. They recently paid a visit to
Hewens Primary School in Hayes, where they
presented to three groups of school children.

The children watched a short video which
showed members of the public with disabilities
and demonstrated how the impact of road
works, and changes to pavement layouts, can
impact their daily routine.

Variable Message Sign (VMS) Operative Ricky
Walton showed the children how the VMS
monitor and screen operated, before letting
them type up their own messages for the class
to read - while Traffic Management Operative
Reece Frost showed them the importance of
temporary traffic lights. Then Group
Streetworks Manager Dickie Aston-Wright and
Thames Water Streetworks Manager Leah
Rhodes-Burch walked the children through a
temporary work area, where they had the
chance to test ‘vision impaired’ goggles.

The team are hoping to visit more schools in
the coming months, so we’ll update you on that
in our next issue of 6S magazine.

We have regular stand downs and briefings, where we promote safe

discuss any HSE issues and to see what lessons have been learned

and finding out if anybody has shown leadership on the contract.

What do you do to empower your team members to put Think Safe
into practice?
All staff and teams on the contract are empowered by both Clancy
Docwra and our client, Thames Water. Everyone has been issued a
Zero Tolerance card by Thames Water, as well as the Clancy Docwra
‘Work Safe, Home Safe’ card. These cards allow our colleagues to
stop a job if they feel it is unsafe. There are also commercial
demands on the contracts, but we need to ensure the teams have
the confidence that the contracts will supply the tools and
equipment needed to do the job safely, whatever the cost. Teams
are taking a new approach to the jobs they are doing, to ensure
HSE is the priority – but some of this does impact their
productivity, so we need to look at other methods which may help
to increase productivity levels.

Here’s a couple of pictures from inside the restaurant

Back in April, construction work started on upgrading our

compiettt’’isimteion old staff restaurant. We’re now two months in and the
project is going really well –so we thought it would be a
great time to give you the chance to name our new
restaurant!

The new name will be chosen by Kevin and Dermot
from all of the entries. The winner will then not
only see the name they suggested up above the door,

but they will also be invited to officially open the

restaurant on launch day, alongside Kevin and Dermot.

Simply complete the entry form below and pop it in the
suggestions box in reception. For those of you who are not
based at Harefield, please email your restaurant name
suggestion to marketing@theclancygroup.co.uk
