SUMMER/FALL 2024 | 3 ear Friends, ften, one defining moment during your travels will leave you with the gift of an unexpected and profound memory that ill stay with you for the rest of your life. recently had a memorable travel experience that I’d like to share as a reminder that travel can be much more than just laxing and sightseeing. If you take the time to immerse yourself in the local culture, you will discover the magic. he stunning Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel graces the cover of this issue. In November, I had the pleasure of aying at this magnificent property. I knew I’d found our 2023 Winter/Spring cover the moment I stepped into the lobby nd was blown away by the architecture and design. s wonderful as my stay in this beautiful Budapest hotel was, it was the time I spent in the nearby town of Tard that left n indelible impression on me. atyo Designs is a Tard-based company that creates hand-embroidered items, employing many women who live in its ny town. Visitors are always welcome at the Matyo studio, and it is clear from the warm smiles of those who work there at teaching embroidery and sharing their culture brings them great joy! is not uncommon for the staff at Matyo Designs to invite visitors into their homes for a home-cooked Hungarian meal. My friends and I accepted a lunch vitation and returned to the home of our gracious host. While we waited for lunch, our new Hungarian friends told us about their lives (via a translator) and hat life is like in a small town in Hungary. We had so many questions that our translator was kept busy! ur main takeaway was that they all live simple lives and want nothing. Cooking and going to church keep them fulfilled. They can now have an added sense f pride with the responsibility and earnings that Matyo Designs provides. They are proud women, strong yet vulnerable. They have been through a lot, but eneration after generation has chosen to stay. When it came time to eat (the most delicious homemade goulash), we toasted “to newfound friendships” with Palinka, a Hungarian fruit brandy. Before we left, e women stood with their arms linked, serenading us in Hungarian. here was no need for a translation. heir eyes revealed the meaning of the song—heartache. We empathetically nodded to each other silently, tears in our eyes. That was a moment I’ll never forget. Regardless of our cultural differences, we felt the same ain. It served as a reminder that in the context of love and loss, words do not have to be understood. The image of them singing is etched in my mind. They ave a bond that is stronger than most friendships. Their arms will be linked for the rest of their lives. nally, as we enter our fifth year, I am delighted to announce that Journey Beyond Aspen Magazine has been named “Best International Luxury Travel agazine-US 2022” by the Global Lux Life Awards (LuxLife Magazine). Your endorsements and support have been greatly appreciated. ave a happy and healthy 2023. ll my best, sa Feldman ditIChifDear Readers, A few months prior, I was invited to a dinner in Manhattan hosted by Via-Croatia, a tour operator that curates luxury bespoke Croatian experiences. During our dinner, the guest speaker was announced as Andrew McCar thy. Most of us know him as an 80’s actor and a member of the infamous “Brat Pack”. What many of you may not know about McCar thy, is, for a dozen years he was editor-at-large at National Geographic Traveler. In addition, he has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, Travel+Leisure, AFAR, Men’s Journal, Bon Appetit, and many others. He has received six Lowell Thomas awards and has been named Travel Journalist of the Year by The Society of American Travel Writers. Once he star ted speaking, his passion for travel took over. He shared his philosophy of travel journalism that had a huge impact on me. “When writing, he says, “Tell me a story, don’t try to sell me a destination.” His recent book, Walking With Sam (a New York Times Best Seller and Barnes & Noble Best Book 2023), chronicles the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail that he embarked on with his son. His storytelling style shines through in every word, inspiring and captivating readers as he takes them along their journey. Journey Beyond Aspen is looking forward to having Andrew share some of his travel stories as we explore and adventure together. Wishing you a memorable Summer/Fall; one that inspires you to tell your story. Warm Regards, Risa Feldman Glasgow Editor-In-Chief Letter from editor

4 | JOURNEYBEYONDASPEN Recently I was being driven to the airpor t by an older gentleman in a silver Cadillac—he had a rakish moustache and wore a jaunty drivers cap. As we turned off the Interstate and approached the terminal I asked if he did much traveling, instead of just dropping-off people like me. “No, not too much,” he said and offered up an explanation involving his wife’s bad knees. “But if I did,” he went on, “it would be around America. Never been abroad. Don’t have much interest.” I wanted to ask why not, but we were pulling up to the curb. I shrugged and said, “It’s a big wide wonderful world out there…” in a leading sor t of way. My driver went silent. I tipped him and got out before he could run around to open my door. Something in the exchange reminded me of a conversation decades earlier, when I called my brother and asked if he’d like to go to Spain with me. “No,” my brother snapped hard and too fast. I was taken aback by the venom in his rejection and the speed with which it came. I hung up, perplexed. So I went to Spain without my brother, and walked five hundred miles across the country on the Camino de Santiago and had my life changed in a field of wheat under a blistering sun. Midway in my journey, after weeks of miserable and lonely walking, I suddenly dropped to my knees and burst into sobs that took me completely unaware and wracked my body. When my tears at last subsided, I sat for a long while on the sun-cracked ear th. Nothing moved in the afternoon heat. I became very still and then felt a great burden lift. It was a burden so familiar to me that I had no idea I carried it— until that moment of its lifting. It was fear—a parasite that lived inside me and latched ahold of any thought or feeling that might prove a willing host. It was a selfish and toxic lover—one that wanted to keep me under its thumb, isolated from others, separate from the world. My fear fed on itself and rewarded itself with more fear. It was fear for its own sake. It was powerful and cunning, often masquerading as prudence or good sense or practicality or any number of things I used to justify my behavior. And in that moment under the Spanish sun it was revealed to me for a fraud. In the space created by the relief of that burden I began to relax in a way I rarely had. I felt like myself utterly. I began to laugh. I got up, rehoisted my rucksack and joyfully ambled across the rest of Spain, a changed man. Fear of course is a shrewd foe, and not something recognized once and easily mastered. But never again would it hold such blind sway over me. I carried that lesson with me in life and on the road. When I was trepidatious about walking through a market in Kratom, Sudan, when I was scared to board a local boat down the Amazon, when fear threatened to paralyze me after a traveling par tner was killed crossing a river in the Absaroka Mountains, I named my fear and walked through it. Fear has proven a tenacious and resilient adversary, but ultimately I’ve come to see it— to use my children’s term—as my greatest ‘Superpower.’ Because it has been so obstinate a force in my life, and because I’ve been so vigilant in my addressing it, I’ve acquired the ability to recognize fear in so many of its forms and manifestations in others. Even when they don’t see it in themselves. It gives me added perspective on their character, and insight into their behavior. It encourages empathy. And seeing that fear in others helps to relieve my own. Walking through the airport terminal now I wonder if it is really the knees of my driver’s wife that holds him back, and my brother’s too rapid response of “No” so many years ago finally comes clear to me as his fear not giving his love a chance to speak. Not going to Spain together was a lost oppor tunity for us, but it allowed a life changing insight for me. My brother’s fear helped to liberate me from mine. A beautiful gift. A Brother’s Gift By Andrew McCarthy
