Editor’s note

Welcome to the first edition of UIS Language Institute Digital
Magazine. It is in deed a great pleasure to see this magazine
officially launched as a gift for the Institute’s 28th anniversary. In
this issue you will have the chance to read about our history,
current branches and quality certifications. Also some of our
students will give us their thoughts and wishes for such an
accomplishment. We hope you take advantage of the Top
strategies for Learning a New Language that we show you in this
edition, adapted from the workshop “Effective Learning
Strategies” created by Ms. Laura Margarita Daza Murcia. You will
get some insights about our cultural club led by our international
assistant from India, Richa Qushomi Sharma. Check out some
useful language on the “Time for Learning” section. You will find
something different and very useful in every edition. Some news
and information about us will be given in the last few pages. We
would like your participation in future editions. This Digital
Magazine is open to our students, teachers, administrative staff
and the university community in general.

Message from the director

Desde su creación, el Instituto de Lenguas UIS ha desempeñado un
papel destacado en la enseñanza de las lenguas extranjeras para el
beneficio no solamente de la Comunidad Universitaria sino de la
sociedad en general. A lo largo de 28 años de historia, el Instituto
ha contribuido a la formación integral de los profesionales UIS,
incentivando en ellos la conciencia global con responsabilidad local.
Acciones como la expansión de los servicios del Instituto de
Lenguas a las sedes regionales, ejecución de programas anuales con
actividades de inmersión para la comunidad UIS, clubes de
conversación e intercambio cultural liderados por asistentes
extranjeros, entre otros, han permitido a nuestros estudiantes UIS
desarrollar su capacidad para acceder al conocimiento y a las redes
de información de primera mano, incrementar sus habilidades para
intercambiar tradiciones y culturas y así, contribuir a la
construcción de una sociedad cada vez más tolerante a la
diversidad.

Para este 2018, proyectos como la creación de asignaturas de
inglés para propósitos específicos, ejecución de talleres de
preparación para el componente de inglés en las pruebas Saber
Pro y el desarrollo de la Semana de la Lengua Extranjera en el
marco de los 70 años de la Universidad Industrial de Santander,
ratifican el compromiso del Instituto de Lenguas para fomentar la
concepción del aprendizaje de las lenguas extranjeras más allá de
las oportunidades de acceso al mercado laboral y a oportunidades
de movilidad social, más bien como una herramienta de
crecimiento personal, de influencia en distintos ámbitos sociales y
de adquisición de habilidades cognitivas aplicables a cualquier área
del conocimiento.
Como egresada de esta alma máter y parte de la familia del
Instituto de Lenguas UIS, ratifico mi compromiso con la
Universidad y la comunidad para continuar ofreciendo programas
de lenguas extranjeras con la alta calidad académica que implica
ser UIS.

Our history

El instituto de lenguas de la UIS es una unidad académico
administrativa auto-sostenible adscrita a la facultad de Ciencias
Humanas de la universidad, creada mediante acuerdo del Consejo
Superior No 036 del 5 abril de 1990.
Durante 28 años ha prestado ininterrumpidamente sus servicios a la
región y hoy es el Instituto de Lenguas más grande en el oriente
colombiano.

ISO 9001:2008 norma internacional y que se centra en todos los
elementos de administración de calidad con los que una empresa
debe contar para tener un sistema efectivo que le permita
administrar y mejorar la calidad de sus productos o servicios.
La norma NTC GP 1000 es el estándar de gestión dirigido hacia la
evaluación del desempeño de las instituciones en términos de
calidad y satisfacción social durante la prestación de los servicios
por parte de las entidades estatales.

Preparación para el componente de

inglés de las pruebas Saber 11 en la
sede regional de Barrancabermeja

Frecuentemente los estudiantes de 10° y 11° de la ciudad de
Barrancabermeja han recurrido al Instituto de Lenguas para
reforzar sus conocimientos en inglés y de esta manera obtener
mejores resultados en las pruebas Saber 11; por lo tanto, surge
la idea de realizar un curso preparatorio para el componente
de inglés de dichas pruebas teniendo en cuenta los contenidos
del nivel Young Adults A1 Y A2, puesto que están ajustados al
MCER nivel básico.
El programa Preparación de Inglés: Prueba Saber 11 está
dirigido a todos los estudiantes de 10° y 11° de colegios
públicos o privados que estén interesados en adquirir las
habilidades necesarias para enfrentar exitosamente las pruebas
de estado SABER 11.

Este programa está basado en dos ejes transversales: el
Marco Común de Referencia Europeo para Lenguas el cual
está encaminado a responder a las necesidades lingüísticas y
culturales de una comunidad a través del notorio desarrollo
de las diferentes habilidades comunicativas en determinada
lengua extranjera y los lineamientos del MEN para la prueba.
Los aprendices pueden utilizar diversas competencias de
acuerdo a un nivel determinado, en diversos contextos y bajo
diversas circunstancias, y así involucrarse en actividades de
lengua para producir y/o recibir textos con relación a temas
de dominio específico. Matriculas curso intensivo: Hasta el 5
de abril. Inicio de clases 10 de abril. Curso Super-intensivo
inicio de clases 26 de junio.

Proyecto formación de maestros de la

secretaría de educación municipal de
Barrancabermeja

Este proyecto llevado a cabo en la sede del Instituto de Lenguas UIS
de Barrancabermeja tuvo como objetivo principal el fortalecimiento
de la competencia comunicativa de los docentes adscritos a la
Secretaría de Educación Municipal de Barrancabermeja interesados
en mejorar su habla, escucha, lectura y escritura en inglés. Este
programa les permitió escalar un nivel dentro del Marco Común
Europeo de Referencia MCER.

Para la habilidad de habla se realizaron diferentes actividades
reales en las que los estudiantes pusieron en práctica los
conocimientos gramaticales enseñados. Entre estas actividades
estuvieron: Juego de roles, dramatizaciones e improvisaciones, y
conversaciones.
En este tipo de actividades se requiere que los estudiantes hagan
uso de la segunda lengua, inglés, con el fin de desarrollar sus
habilidades comunicativas. El uso de la tecnología también jugó
un papel importante durante el desarrollo del curso. En el aula
de multimedia los estudiantes hicieron uso de plataformas y
sitios web que les permitieron mejorar su comprensión auditiva
y el uso acertado de la gramática en ejercicios con enfoque en la
vida real. El balance fue positivo y los estudiantes alcanzaron los
objetivos propuestos.

Proyecto formación escuela Normal

Barrancabermeja

El Instituto de Lenguas UIS con el animo de mejorar las
habilidades comunicativas habla, escucha, lectura y escritura en
los estudiantes del ciclo complementario de la Escuela Normal
Superior Cristo Rey de Barrancabermeja, jugó un papel
extraordinario ayudándoles a alcanzar los niveles A2 o B1 de
acuerdo al Marco Común de Europeo de Referencia. La
experiencia vivida por los estudiantes demuestra la capacidad de
impacto positivo que el Instituto tiene en la comunidad. A
continuación en las imágenes podemos ver algunas de las
actividades que se desarrollaron durante el curso. Estas
actividades tuvieron un enfoque comunicativo aplicado a la vida
real.

Impact in society

During 28 years of trajectory, the UIS Language Institute in
congruence with the institutional objectives has addressed the
needs of the community through its programs and services under
the modality of extension, understood as the social projection of
the University.
The UIS Language Institute extended its services to the
municipalities in which the regional branches of the University
operate. Children, youth and adults from Barrancabermeja,
Barbosa, Socorro and Málaga have the opportunity to improve
their communicative skills in a foreign language through the
extension courses offered there, expanding their access to the
labor market and academic opportunities. In the regional branches,
there are about 1300 students of the curricular foreign language
program and about 700 students of the extension program who,
through the knowledge of other cultures that achieve by learning
foreign languages, value the cultural richness of their regions and
contribute to its dissemination even in international settings.

Convinced of the impact generated by quality teaching in society,
the UIS Language Institute has contributed to the development of
the towns in which it has carried out training projects related not
only to the learning of foreign languages but also to teacher
training. It is important to highlight that several training programs
for public school teachers developed in agreement with local
departments of education, have increased the level of competence
in English of the participants, as well as their methodological skills
for the benefit of their students.
Training actions such as those carried out with the Normal
Schools, have allowed the participation of the UIS Language
Institute in the comprehensive training of future elementary
school teachers, who will have the linguistic and methodological
skills in English that are necessary to encourage the learning of this
language in future generations.
The UIS Language Institute continues to update its programs and
services according to the needs of the communities of
northeastern Colombia, with the UIS high academic quality.

Portuguese in action at ILUIS

Além de ser a 6° língua mais falada do mundo, o português quebra
fronteiras e faz que fiquemos mais perto de culturas inesquecíveis e
cheias de marra. Conectar-nos com o acolhedor brasileiro e sua
alegria, e como esquecer dos elegantes portugueses, e junto com
eles, aquelas incredibilíssimas paisagens características dos seus
países. Parabéns ao instituto de línguas pelo 28° aniversario.
Obrigado pelo apoio aos estudantes da universidade e por fazer às
vezes o trabalho de ponte, ligando-nos com as diferentes culturas,
permitindo assim, que sejamos verdadeiros cidadãos do mundo.

French in action at ILUIS

L’enseignement et l’apprentissage des langues vivantes n’est pas
qu’un processus d’acquisition de structures dont il faut connaître les
règles de combinaison pour pouvoir les utiliser. Pour enseigner et
apprendre une langue, il est essentiel de la considérer comme un
moyen d’apprentissage qui comporte non seulement des objectifs
formatifs et fonctionnels, mais aussi des objectifs plus humaniste
ceux qui permettent la communication avec les membres d’une
culture étrangère et même l’intercompréhension entre les
différentes cultures.

Alors, pourquoi apprendre et enseigner le
français ?

D’abord, parce qu’il vous permet d’accéder à sa vaste culture qui

inclut des domaines tels que la cuisine, la mode, le théâtre, la

littérature, les arts visuels, la danse et l’architecture. En plus de vous

fournir de cette compétence culturelle, le français vous facilite la

mobilité en Europe et dans le monde étant donné qu’il est parlé

dans 57 autres pays différents en plus de la France. En outre, il est

une langue des relations internationales puisque c’est langue

officielle de l’ONU, de l’UE, de l’UNESCO, de l’OTAN, du Comité

International Olympique, de la Croix Rouge Internationale et de

plusieurs autres organisations internationales. Ainsi il vous permet

de poser un autre regard sur le monde en communiquant avec les

francophones sur tous les continents et en s’informant grâce aux

grands médias internationaux en langue française. Finalement,

maîtriser la langue française vous permet notamment de suivre des

études dans des universités ou hautes écoles en France, en Suisse

romande, au Canada et dans tous les pays francophones ce qui

pourrait multiplier vos chances sur le marché international de

l’emploi principalement, dans des nombreuses entreprises

Happy ILUIS 28th anniversary

My name is Alejandro Ríos Cobos. My learning process at UIS
Language Institute started in 2008 when I was eight-years-old. Now as a
teenager, I am completely grateful with the institute in general because
learning a foreign language has given me many opportunities such as
travelling abroad and the advantage of having an international exam
that certifies my language level.

The Language Institute has offered all its students and me an excellent
academic quality through its marvellous teachers who have been offering
all their patience, sympathy and knowledge to us. It also has great
facilities, good equipment and an awesome staff in general.

I would recommend UIS Language Institute without any doubt. In
Colombia, it is not easy to find people who speak a foreign language but
at UIS English Language Institute, we can change this and make of
Colombian population, an international one, a better one.

Palabras sinceras cargadas
de experiencia

Es muy hermoso escribir acerca de la experiencia de trabajar en
ILUIS, porque genera en mí sentimientos de inmensa gratitud.
Hace 13 años por gracia de Dios, llegué a esta maravillosa
dependencia de la UIS, con muchas expectativas, necesidad de
trabajar, feliz por la oportunidad y con la esperanza de trabajar
mucho tiempo. Con gran satisfacción puedo decirles que he
crecido como persona, como madre, como mujer y como
compañera de todas las personas que han hecho parte del valioso
equipo de trabajo. Coordinadores, Coordinadoras, mis
compañeros Auxiliares; con ellos hemos trabajado hombro a
hombro y hemos compartido muchos momentos de felicidad,
esparcimiento, preocupaciones y lágrimas “experiencia
maravillosa e invaluable”. Para mis compañeros y compañeras
solo tengo gratitud, admiración y respeto, más de una década
viendo crecer a los niños y niñas, jóvenes y adultos que han
llegado al ILUIS, con el anhelo de aprender inglés u otro idioma y
al cabo de muy corto tiempo verlos cumplir su objetivo de
formación académica con el aprendizaje de una segunda lengua.

Es muy satisfactorio ver todos los días a los docentes quienes no
se cansan de saludarnos con una sonrisa, darnos las gracias, un
Dios se lo pague. Es gratificante poder ayudarles en todo cuanto
esté a nuestro alcance, escucharlos y apoyar su inmensa labor.
Felicitar y agradecer a las directoras Dra. Mariela Gómez, Leonor
Portilla, y nuestra Directora actual Dra. María Angélica Arenas,
quien con su sabiduría e inteligencia, ha dirigido y perfeccionado

Top strategies for learning a new

language

"Oh God, how would I learn all this new stuff?" That's one of the most common
expressions from students I´ve heard along the hall of the Language Institute,
and I always say to myself "if they only know themselves, the way they learn,
the weaknesses and strengths they have, they wouldn't feel overwhelmed"
To enjoy the path and get awesome results depend on the way YOU face your
own learning process. That's why the Learning Strategies are effective plans you
can use in order to get a goal while you enjoy the route. So, it is time to be
aware of the importance of feeling in charge and empower the learning process
without any fear. Remember, when you take a moment to think about yourself
and your characteristics as a person and as a student you realize you have what
you need to be a hit!

Comparte lo que Compartir conocimiento implica
sabes responsabilidad y colaboración, mientras
le explicas a tu compañero lo que sabes,
con otro estarás "refrescando" tu conocimiento y
compañero a la vez le estarás aportando al
crecimiento de él o ella. Antes de
explicarle a otro o de compartir lo que
sabes debes asegurarte que lo que vas a
decir es lo correcto. En esto debes ser
muy responsable. Sin embargo, si tienes
un error tu compañero podría
corregirte y se afianza el proceso y el
sentido de esta estrategia.

Autoevaluarte, implica dos cosas. Ser honesto con sigo Autoevalúate
mismo para hacer una evaluación sobre cómo va mi
proceso de aprendizaje. Qué he hecho para obtener
buenos resultados y qué he dejado de hacer. ¿Cuál es
la razón para que mi avance sea lento? Por otra parte,
debes imaginar que eres el profesor y pensar en las
preguntas que él o ella te podría hacer en el examen o
en la previa e incluso después del proyecto de clase
teniendo en cuenta los contenidos y lo visto durante la
clase. De esta manera me puedo preparar mejor.

UIS Language Institute as a
Connecting Bridge

Throughout the years, UIS Language Institute has been
continuously changing and adapting in order to offer quality and
better services to our students and the community. Keeping in
mind our values and mission, the institute has served as a
connecting bridge between people and the outside word of
opportunities. This has been reached by developing national and
international strategic relations. As a result, agreements with
foreign agencies such as the YMCA have given many of our
students the opportunity of having direct contact with different
languages in a natural environment. In order to obtain such
opportunities students must be prepared to face the challenge
and certification is necessary. The Language Institute is recognized
as an international exam center. Here students can take such
exams before applying to the different international programs
which are not only offered by the university but by the local and
national government as well. Students and people in general are
not required to travel to another city in order to be certified in
language skills.

On the other hand, strategic planning has let the presence of
native speakers at almost every time during the school year. This
gives an advantage and great opportunities for students and
teachers to improve and brush up on the different languages
offered at the Language Institute. The figure of international
language assistants has also become a priority as part of planning
future growth and strengthening of the Institute. Currently, an
international language assistant from India is working hard and
two more assistants are expected. One from France and another
from England. The big picture is the representation of a
connecting bridge between our students, the community and the
world of opportunities overseas. Our goal is to continue offering
top quality and excellent service in language education in order to
comply with the needs of our students and customers.

I preferred these two-remarkable men from the timeline
because of their maturity about cultures. It reflects in their
words too. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister of
independent India. India is a country of various religions and
cultures. Because of this broad mindedness Indians live in
harmony despite the remarkable differences in beliefs and
customs. Paulo Coelho is renowned Noble Prize winner world
author. World author because he talks about understanding,
acceptance, dreams and above all humans.

It´s the sheer need of knowing other cultures and countries
because thanks to technology the world is becoming smaller. But
everything that we find in this virtual world is not necessarily
always correct. Having a practical chance is more than the best to
acquire the clarity about distant country, its people, ideology etc.
Cultural Club is a platform where we gain understanding of distant
culture, share heartfelt laughter and exchange cultures using
English global language of our age. Teachers are not merely
teachers but they are also of students of cultural studies class. We
talk about the gastronomy, medicinal methods, geography, tourism
etc. It takes curiosity, international and personal relationships to the
next level as we know the deeper aspects of same things that we
normally google to learn. It makes us competent to become global
citizens in true sense.
I congratulate the Language Institute and Universidad Industrial de
Santander for laying foundation of the excellent rostrum.

Time for learning

Indianisms

Did you know India has large number of English speaking
population that is more than the United Kingdom, Australia, United
States of America, New Zealand and South Africa combined? This
time we are going to learn some Indian English expressions. There
is a variety of expressions in Indian English. We have brought you
some typical expressions that are quite interesting and surely, they
will enrich your cultural knowledge of a distant country.

1. My boss’s children are convent educated.

Well, typically we refer convent to a religious place where Nuns
educate the people who live in a monastery or as a part of charity.
Initially during the British Rule (India was a British colony for more

than 200 years) and even after convent has the same connotation.
But in some places people use this convent when someone has
studied in English Medium school. It means that the medium of
instructions and course work is completely in English Language.

2. My relatives eat my brain every time we
meet.

Don´t worry! We´re not talking about the cannibal. This an
expression to express your boredom or annoyance when someone
keeps talking for long or talking about something that bothers you.

3. Monkey cap

Northern parts of India are very cold during winters despite the facts
that the summer is longer and super-hot. So, people wear balaclava.

4. My boss always sits on my head

Wait! You really don´t need to respond “Ask your boss to get down
immediately!”. Because this is the literal translation of the Hindi
“Mera boss mera sir par baitha hai!” Actually, this expression means
“My boss stresses me out.”

5. She passed out of Miranda House College.

When a person passes out, you definitely run for first aid. Hold on
dear! In India, passing out has little to do with falling unconscious.
'She passed out´ is the Indian English way of saying ´She graduated´
from this college.
