The History of Jabberwock
In his immortal classic. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll created the character known
as The Jabberwock. As the story unfolded, each year, The Jabberwock summoned all of the members of
his kingdom to put on a gala event. Similarly, Delta Sigma Theta’s “Little Miss Jabberwock
Pageant” offers an evening of pageantry and entertainment for all and the recognition of many.
This unique project started as a means of raising scholarship funds by a Boston, Massachusetts
chapter in 1925. From the concept conceived by Marion Hope Conover, members of the Iota
Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. presented a variety of performers who competed for
prize monies. From this successful venture, the Delta Jabberwock was born and it would soon
become part of the Delta tradition.
Many chapters of the sorority quickly adopted this annual production idea. Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. has produced innumerable Jabberwocks throughout the United States and aboard.
On December 28, 1947, the Jabberwock was formally adopted and copyrighted by Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc.
Norfolk Alumnae Chapter held its last Jabberwock Pageant in 1997. The chapter is thrilled about
the return of the Little Miss Jabberwock Pageant. We are extremely grateful for your support as we
take this magical journey for a Fairy Tale in Delta land! This will be an experience you and your
child will cherish for years to come.

Letter from the Norfolk Alumna Chapter President
Greetings Everyone,
It is my honor to bring you warm greetings on behalf of Norfolk Alumnnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Incorporated. We are extremely excited and proud of the return of the Little Miss Jabberwock
Pageant after twenty years. Paying tribute to our last Little Miss Jabberwock Pageant, we chose to use the same
theme, “A Fairy Tale In Delta Land.”
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a non-profit organization of college-educated women whose
purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout
the world. Continuing the legacy of our twenty-two esteemed Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Incorporated, Norfolk Alumnae Chapter strives to promote Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service. Our
responsibility in respect to scholarship is to help our youth attend college by providing sholarships to help with
tuition expenses.
Norfolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, incorporated is proud of our Mildred Dudley Peters
Scholarship Program. Each year we award a scholarship to a Norfolk Public High School graduating senior
who will attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). The late Mildred Dudley Peters was a
devoted member of our chapter. She was the first African-American Supervisor for Negro Schools in Norfolk,
Virginia. Mrs. Peters is noted for revising the curriculum for teaching history, geography, and government for
grades four through seven in approximately ten schools. She was very passionate about education and student
achievement. Norfolk Alumnae Chapter is committed to continuing this legacy.
The majority of the proceeds from this event will be used for our scholarship and a small portion for chapter
programs. To the parents of our Jabberwock contestants, thank you for believing in our vision and our
purpose. This is all possible because of your dedication, determination, and hard work. It is our sincere hope
that this experience was enjoyable and rewarding for you and your daughters. We are grateful for the
opportunity to make a valuable impression in the lives of your daughters. To all loyal supporters, thank you for
sharing our dream and making the decision to support us. Your monetary and non-monetary contributions are
greatly appreciated. To all members of Norfolk Alumnae Chapter, thank you for believing in this project and

Co-Chair thank you for your dedication, true determination, and many hours of hard work and sacrifice to
make this event possible. To the committee members and others, who helped in any way, thank you for your
support and assistance. Last, but certainly not least, to all Little Miss Jabberwock contestants, you are a
princess and will forever be! You are smart, graceful, confident, talented, and beautiful inside and out. Let
your light continue to shine! Wishing you the very best in all of your future endeavors.

Letter from the 2017 Little Miss Jabberwock Chair & Co-Chair
The 2016-2017 Little Miss Jabberwock Committee welcomes you as we host this year of pageantry
and scholarship. In keeping with Delta Sigma Theta’s mission, we are extremely excited to share
this special occasion with you as we walk in the purpose for which we are called to: Sisterhood,
Scholarship, and Service.
Our Jabberwock contestants, parents, grandparents, and committee members have worked very
hard over the last year. In addition to fundraising, the contestants have participated in cultural
activities, educational activities, and community service programs, and many hours of rehearsals.
Some of highlights for the 2016/17 year include: Mommy & Me Tea, which included an Etiquette
Session, Participated and marched in Norfolk State University’s Homecoming Parade, informing
the City of Norfolk that Little Miss Jabberwock was back and telling the citizens to get out and
VOTE, Packaged and Donated 30 red bags of food to the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia.
Collected new scarves and stuffed animals to provide to the children in shelters at ForKids, Celebrated “Read across America”
Day and did some hands on experiments with a coastal engineer, to learn about careers in S.T.E.M. We participated in Dance
Your Heart Out in celebration of American Heart Association month.
We have witnessed the bonding experiences, the transformation, and the blooming of our princesses through this pageant
experience. The contestants’ reasons for participating in this scholarship pageant were actualized: raising funds for college,
being exposed to a gamut of social, educational and cultural experiences, participating in community service projects, and
meeting and bonding with new friends.
Parents, grandparents, sorors, friends, committee members, and family members, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
We could not have done this without you. Your financial, social, time, and emotional support have enabled us to achieve our
goals of transforming the lives of some deserving Norfolk Public High School seniors through scholarship and impacting our
community through service.
To the hard working Little Miss Jabberwock committee, you have exemplified what commitment
and dedication mean. Your support and steadfastness have enabled this process to be planned with
love and teamwork. You are a great time and we THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMITMENT!
To our contestants, our princesses continue to strive for excellence in your educational pursuits.
Never stop learning, never stop growing, work hard, preserve, remember the golden rule, and see
how God will continue to bless and reward you. Remember to DREAM BIG PRINCESSES! WE
ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!
Chapter members, we could not have done this without you. We made this commitment, worked
alongside each other, and now have witnessed the success of this event. Let us keep the charge of
our mission of Sisterhood, Service, and Scholarship as set forth by our founders. God bless you all.
With Service and Gratitude,

Mistress of Ceremony
Barbara Ciara joined the WTKR News 3 team in July of 2000 and can now be seen
weekdays 4pm to 6pm on News 3. Ciara is an award-winning broadcast journalist with
more than 35 years of experience covering hard-hitting news stories in locations such
as Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Europe, Haiti and Mexico. Her stateside coverage
includes political campaigns, investigative reporting and interviews with luminaries like
Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey.
She has provided analysis on CNN, CBS News, XM Radio, National Public Radio and
the Tom Joyner Morning Show in addition to providing quotes for the New York
Times and the Washington Post, among other news outlets. She was also a columnist
for "The Daily Press" for a number of years, and recently served as president of two of
the world's largest minority journalists organizations, UNITY, journalist of color, and
the National Association of Black Journalists. In these roles, she advocated for
diversity in the newsroom, balanced coverage of the community and increased roles for
minorities in management positions.
Barbara has won numerous community and professional honors for her work on
camera and in the community. But she is most proud of her work that gives a voice to
the voiceless. She was awarded the coveted Emmy Award for her series "Guilty Til
Proven Innocent". She also received honors from Columbia University Graduate
School of Journalism for her reports on race and ethnicity. Her co-honorees were CBS'
Dan Rather and producers from 60 Minutes.
In 2011, Ciara was inducted by the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences- National Capital Chesapeake Bay chapter- to be
an honoree of the Silver Circle awards. The Silver Circle honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the broadcast or
cable industry for 25 years or more. The highlights of her stateside coverage include investigative reports on consumer fraud, campaign
coverage, felony voting rights, an investigation on Klan activity in Hampton Roads, segregation on city land at Portsmouth's Bide-A-Wee
golf course, a health insurance investigation that resulted in coverage for a terminally ill man, and her one on one interview with Oprah
Winfrey. Ciara has also been honored with numerous Associated Press and United Press International awards dating back to 1986, as well
as a dozen prestigious "Excel" awards from the Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals.
Her journalism career began in Tucson, Arizona where she worked on the school newspaper at Pima Community College while also
attending the University of Arizona. During her junior year she left college to take a full time position at KZAZ-TV in Tucson, Arizona in
1976. Over a five year period she worked in production as an audio director, technical director, and later in news as a photographer,
reporter, assignment editor, producer, noon anchor, and finally news director. At the time, 1978, she was the youngest female and first
African-American to achieve the management status of news director at a commercial television station in the southwest.
Although her work experience didn't require it, Barbara returned to college enrolling at Hampton University to complete her undergraduate
degree. She graduated Summa Cum Laude.
From the fall of 1996 to the summer of 2000, Barbara also served as managing editor of the partnership between WVEC-TV and WHRO
public television where her duties included producing and co-hosting the Newsmagazine "This Week in Hampton Roads."
Barbara is also a strong believer in public service and has worked with a number of non-profit organizations. In August 2007, she was
elected President of the National Association of Black Journalists, the largest journalism organization of color in the world. Followed by a
year of leadership as the President of UNITY: Journalists of Color--an alliance between Black, Hispanic, Native American and Asian
Journalists.
The honor Barbara is most proud of is her title as mother, and grandmother. But whatever you do, don't use the "G" word, the kids call
her Bobbi.
