Exploring
Alternative
Professions
INTRODUCTION
Dental healthcare extends to more than just managing the
teeth and gums. As professionals in this sector, you are also
educators, listeners, supporters and confidantes, and this can be
extremely challenging at times.
On top of this, the Covid 19 pandemic was particularly difficult
and many understandably but sadly, started to lose sight of
what they love about being a Dental Professional.
This two-day conference has been created completely with
you in mind and without a tooth in sight! You will have the
opportunity to meet other like-minded professionals and explore
the following:
• How to reignite your passion for Dentistry
• Alternative healthcare that can support you personally
• Professions where your skills can be transferred, should you wish to incorporate an
alternative career alongside Dentistry
On day one, you will all be invited to listen to an insightful 30 minute power session on
each profession, helping you to understand how transferable many of your skills are. On
day two, you will attend three 90 minute workshops of your choice, to gain a more in depth
understanding and time with the speaker.
Please note, workshops must be selected at the time of booking.
What we will cover
• Coaching and presentation skills
• Electro-acupuncture
• Hypnosis
• Lymph, Facia and the TMJ

PRESENTATION SKILLS COACHING
Start the mini-skirt revolution
with Siobhan Kelleher MSc, Dip DH
Would you like to speak to an audience or your team at
work with confidence? I turned down many speaking
opportunities because I was petrified of public speaking.
I remember my first speaking events when I hung
onto the podium for dear life! As your colleague, I’d be
delighted to share several coaching tips and tricks with
you and get you on your feet while having some fun and
supporting each other in an interactive and engaging
workshop and together we can be part of the mini-skirt
revolution!
Siobhan Kelleherj, a multi-award-winning
dental hygienist, has walked the entire dental
team’s shoes over the last twenty-five years from
dental nurse to practice owner. Alongside her dentistry
career, she owned a tea company and imported high-grade fine teas from China. Her
love of business found her coaching businesses and she went back to study for a
Masters in Personal and Management Coaching. She is a qualified facilitator and
currently studying Positive health with the Royal College of Surgeons. She is the founder
and coordinator of the Ikigai Oral Hygiene Programme. Siobhan believes you can be
whatever you want to be and coaches individuals to support them in unlocking their

ACUPUNCTURE FOR THE DENTAL TEAM
with Dr David Johnson
Acupuncture is a technique for either curing or alleviating diseases, or put in other words,
an extra tool in a dental toolbox. It has been known in China for the last 3-4,000 years
and the technique has been able to demonstrate results that even today are surprising.
In Dentistry. It is used to treat conditions from TMJ pain to trigeminal neuralgia and
prominent gag reflex. The workshop will cover the
background of how acupuncture works, discussing
both the Chinese and Scientific hypothesis. This will be
followed by the application of acupuncture in relation to
dentistry and the conditions that can be treated. Finally,
the practical side of acupuncture and how you can start
using it within your dental practice. The most exciting
part is that delegates will get to carry out some dental
acupuncture on each other!
David is a seasoned Dental Officer with over 18 years
expertise treating special care adults and children.
Throughout his day to day practice he uses a wide range
of skills to treat special care patients, from general
anaesthetic and sedation to cognitive behavioural therapy.
He is the current Chairman of the Welsh Committee for Community Dentistry which represents
the CDS and advises the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Well-being and Sport on Oral Health
and Dental Services in Wales. David has published many articles on research within the fields
of paediatric dentistry and dental acupuncture with the most recent being “Effects of the
COVID-19 pandemic on the Mental Health of Dentists within Wales”. In addition to this, he
is on the research panel of the Child Protection Systematic Review on Paediatric Oral and
Dental Neglect.
Outside of work David regularly teaches postgraduate courses on the management of head
and neck pain using acupuncture.

LYMPH, FASCIA AND THE TMJ
With Caroline Smith
Having graduated from Newcastle University in 2009, I
have worked in both NHS and Private settings carrying
out my full scope of practice. I have experience as a
clinical tutor at Teesside University and more recently
have taken a functional focus to dental health.
I have my own clinic outside of Dentistry where I practice
a blend of Nutritional Therapy, TMJ therapy and airway
support. I am extremely passionate about spreading the
awareness of airway issues and whole body health.
In practice, my main focus now is periodontal therapy,
incorporating salivary diagnostic and genetic testing.
This will allow me to one day blend in my complementary
therapies to support my patients from a whole body
perspective.

NUTRITION AND HORMONES
With Nina Farmer.
Nina will be talking about nutrition in the dental setting
and how she brings nutrition into her daily practice
with patients. Her workshop on this subject will have an
emphasis on hormones, hormonal balancing/conditions,
what we might see in the dental setting and how we can
adapt our advice to help these patients.
Nina qualified as a Dental Therapist in 2013 at Sheffield
Dental school but always had an interest in taking a
more holistic and whole-body approach to treating
her patients and attended various short courses on
nutrition. Not long after this Nina experienced ill health
with her hormones and was diagnosed with poly cystic ovarian syndrome. She felt her
health was out of control and wanted to understand what was happening in her body so
that she could take back control.
So, Nina decided to become dual trained as a Nutritional Therapist and Dental Therapist,
graduating as a Nutritional Therapist February 2020 at Birmingham university through
the college of naturopathic medicine and has been helping clients with problems such
as gut issues, hormonal balancing, wellbeing and any other needs that they attend
appointments with. She also provides wellbeing workshops for the general public and is in
the process of starting a community group to help those who need support with hormonal
health.
In addition to helping other clinicians to feel healthy and well, in particular dental
hygienists and dental therapists who are constantly on the go, she also helps them to feel
confident and safe in providing nutritional support for their patients and has provided
talks, webinars and articles surrounding these issues. Each webinar, talk, workshop or
article Nina provides can be applied to your health, the health of your patients and your
loved ones as nutrition applies to all.
