Mar Vista High School
Dress Guidelines
Mar Vista High School respect’s students right to a safe a secure campus in which they can learn in an environment free
from harassment, intimidation or distraction. Students are expected to wear clothes that are suitable and appropriate
for school (SUHSD Policy 5132). In maintaining this expectation, MVH recognizes the value and importance of self-
awareness, social awareness and responsible decision making for all members of our community.
Self-Awareness is the ability to accurately recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they
influence behavior.
Social Awareness is the ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from
diverse backgrounds and cultures. The ability to understand social and ethical norms for behavior.
Responsible Decision Making is the ability to make constructive choices about personal behavior and social
interactions based on ethical standards, safety concerns, and social norms. The realistic evaluation of
consequences of various actions, and a consideration of the wellbeing of oneself and others.
These values are reflected in our expectations for appropriate dress in an educational environment. Student attire
should facilitate learning as well as the health and safety of all members of our school community (students, staff,
parents, etc.). This policy is intended to provide guidance to students, parents, staff and community members.
