Prohibited Items/Electronic Device Policy

There are many items available that can be disruptive in a school setting. While many items are appropriate at home, beach,
etc., they can be disruptive in a classroom, or in the lunch area, where hundreds of students congregate, and can often prove
to be a safety hazard in these circumstances. They can also be subject to theft and/or vandalism. The list of prohibited items,
below, is not all-inclusive and will change as new and different products become available in our society. The following
items are prohibited for use on school premises:

• Scooters • roller blades • shoes with wheels • squirt guns • water balloons • walkie-talkies • video cameras
• portable audio speakers • skateboards/bicycles •alcohol• drugs • tobacco products • paraphernalia • lighters •
noisemakers • firecrackers • capguns • incendiary devices • Weapons (real or imitation) • laser pointers

Skateboards

Skateboarding while on school grounds is prohibited at all times. There are safety and liability concerns as well potential
damage to school benches and property. Though bringing skateboards to campus as a means of transportation is not
prohibited, it is not advised. If confiscated, a skateboard will not be returned on the same day unless a parent or guardian
comes to pick it up. Repeat offenders will have it confiscated for longer periods and may be prohibited from bringing it to
school for the remainder of the school year.

Cell Phones & Electronic Devices

The use of listening or recording devices by any person, including students, in any classroom without prior consent
of the teacher and principal is prohibited by Sweetwater District policy.

Students may bring cell phones to school at their own risk. However, they must not disrupt any classroom and are
not to be in use during instructional time other than for instructional purposes. Any instructional use of cell phones
or electronic devices must be at the specific request of the classroom teacher. Outside of that circumstance, cell
phones must be completely turned OFF while in the classroom. Cell phones on vibrate while in the classroom are
not acceptable.

If students fail to comply with this policy and correct cell phone etiquette in the classroom, teachers may confiscate the
device and turn it in to the Assistant Principals' office with a referral about the infraction. Parents will be notified to pick up
the electronic device in the Assistant Principals' Office. If the problem persists, student will have disciplinary consequences.

MVH or SUHSD is not responsible for any lost or stolen electronic devices. We advise parents and students that while
a cell phone might be a necessity, all other devices: IPODs, MP3, Cameras, gaming devices, etc. are not needed as part of
our educational program. If these expensive items are brought, please be aware that they have a high probability of being
stolen or lost.

*Mar Vista High School is not responsible for lost or stolen items, including but not limited to cell phones.

MARINER DRESS CODE

“The Board of Trustees of the Sweetwater Union High School District desire to keep the district schools and
students free from the threats of harmful influence of any groups or gangs which advocate drug use or
disruptive behavior. The Board, therefore prohibits the wearing, use, possession, distribution, display of,
presence of any apparel, jewelry, emblem, badge, symbol, sign, accessory, notebook or manner of grooming
which by virtue of its color, arrangement, trademark or any other attribute, is recognized as or denotes
membership or affiliation with any gang.” (SUHSD Policy #5150)

The following types of dress may create a safety hazard or disrupt the educational process at
Mar Vista High School and are prohibited:

Attendance

Chronic Absence: It’s About Lost Instructional Time, Not Whether
Absences are Excused or Unexcused

Chronic absence is a powerful predictor of achievement because it measures the amount of
instructional time a student has missed over the course of the school year.

Research findings have documented the positive relationship between time and learning. Instructional
quality and other factors are important, but this finding is clear: more time spent by students in
intentional learning environments means more learning.

Commitments you can make as a student:

 I will make attending school every day a priority.

 I will keep track of my attendance and absences.

 I will set my alarm clock for a.m.

 I will attend school every day unless I’m truly sick with a temperature of 100 degrees or more.

 I will find a relative, friend or neighbor who can take me to school if I miss my bus.

 If I am absent, I will contact my teachers to find out what I missed.

 I will set up medical and dental appointments for weekdays after school. If I must make a medical appointment

during the school day, I will try to attend school for the majority of the day.

 When I am struggling with a challenge that is keeping me from school I will confide in an adult at school and seek

help.

Protocols for Reporting an Absence

1. Students and parents are responsible for school attendance. Excessive absences may result in loss of credit
and/or grades. Absences should be cleared no later than 10 days after the absence. A doctor's note will
be required if a student reaches 3 excused or unexcused absences per semester. Any exceptions will
be reviewed by the administration for approval.

2. Students may be excused from school for the following reasons: -
a) Personal Illness
b) Quarantine by county or city health officer
c) Appointments for medical, dental, optometric, or chiropractic services
d) Participation in religious instruction OT exercises in accordance with District Board Policy 6114 and
Administrative Regulation 6114.2.1
e) Attendance at funeral services for a member of the immediate family. One (1) day if in California, three (3)
days if out-of-state.

Upon written request of the parent/guardian/caregiver, a student’s absence may be excused
for the following reasons:

a) Appearance in court
b) Observation of holiday as ceremony of his/her religion
c) Employment interview or conference
d) Other reasons requested in writing by the parent/guardian/caregiver and considered legitimate by the

principal or his/her designee.

3. Saturday School for Attendance: While attending Saturday School, students must work on core academic
work, assigned by a teacher in class, in English, Math, Science, or Social Science. Teachers do not
create specific assignments for Saturday School. Students must work on making up missed
assignments, work on current assigned work given in class, study for a specific assignment or test, etc. It
is the student's responsibility to bring the assignment, any textbooks or needed supplies, and/or
directions/guidelines provided by the teacher.

4. Make-Up work due to an Excused Absence (SUHSD Regulation No. 5112.1)
a) Teachers are responsible for providing students the opportunity to make up work missed during
excused absences. They may, but are not required to, provide the opportunity to for truant students
to make up work.
b) Students shall be permitted to complete all assignments and tests missed during excused absences,
and upon satisfactory completion, shall be given full credit for their work.
c) The teacher shall determine what assignments and/or tests the student shall make up and in what
period of time the student shall complete such assignments.
d) Tests and assignments shall be reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, tests and
assignments that the student missed during his/her absence.
e) Students must request an assignment within two (2) days following return from absence.

f) Assignments must be completed within a period of time equal to the length of absence. Any
exceptions to the submission of make-up work are at the discretion of the teacher.

Tardy Policy
The likelihood of success in learning is strongly linked to strong participation in school programs
which is linked to arriving on time. It is important for students to develop habits of arriving on time at
an early age.

Regular Routines are Important
 Have a set time to go bed
 Go to bed at the same time every night
 Set an alarm for the same time every morning

Non Privileged List

At MVH, our goal is for you to receive a quality education in order to maximize your potential

opportunities for the future. In order to participate in school events and privileges like dances, grad

night and other incentives/activities we expect students to maintain the following:
 2.0 GPA in scholarship and citizenship reviewed at each grading period.
 Less than unexcused 6 absences a semester or 2 a grading period (Includes period absences).
 Less than 10 tardies a grading period.
 In good standing with the ASB and library
 Serious discipline incident prior to a school event.

The non-privileged list is generated and reviewed by school administration every grading period. Students
who do not meet the criteria above at a grading period are considered to be on the “Non Privileged List”

and are therefore ineligible to participate in ASB activities. Once a student can demonstrate they met the

criteria above, they can be removed from the non-privilege list with approval from an Assistant Principal.

Laptops

Laptops are a powerful tool that can enhance learning. Our teachers have worked hard to create engaging
lessons that prepare students for 21st century technology skills. All students are expected to receive and utilize a
laptop. Students without laptops still may be expected to submit work electronically. Accommodations may be
made on a case by case basis based on student need resulting from a parent conference with the Assistant
Principal and the teacher.
