We are delighted to share our annual report, highlighting our
achievements over the past year. As we arrive at our 10 year anniversary,
we are proud that Gateways has grown to become recognized nationally
as a high quality service provider and as a thought leader in the field in

inclusion in Jewish education.

Thank you for your support in making Jewish education accessible to
students of ALL abilities. We look forward to sharing new

TEENS IN ACTION

Did you know that 72 teens showed up every Sunday morning
during the school year to work one-to-one with the students in
our Sunday program? And an additional 115 students received
training so that they could serve as teen madrichim and help
students with special learning needs in their own congregational
Hebrew schools?

Gateways wants to make Jewish education accessible in all its
forms. In order to do that, there needs to be affordable,
sustainable options to support students with special needs. We
developed an innovative training program to empower Jewish
teens to be able to help make Jewish education possible for all
Jewish students. We provide the teens in our independent
programs with weekly training and provide training to our
congregational partners so that they can train their teens.

A BAT MITZVAH TO REMEMBER

This year, we celebrated our 42nd b’nei
mitzvah. Mira was one of 10 students who
participated this year in Gateways’ B’nei
Mitzvah Program. She has been in Gateways’
programs since she was 5. She is nonverbal
and uses a communication device to
communicate.

Her family’s preparation for her bat mitzvah
gained national recognition when her mother
shared her feelings in an article written for a
digital Jewish parenting website (Kveller).
Mira celebrated her bat mitzvah at Temple
Beth Zion surrounded by her family’s
synagogue community and Mira’s Gateways’
friends.

GRADUATION DAY FOR BINNY

In June, Binny, a student with Down
Syndrome, graduated from Striar
Hebrew Academy in Sharon (SHAS).
Getting to that day was no simple
task. It required a team of 11,
including educators, therapists and
tutors who worked in school with
Binny since he was three. Binny’s
successful attendance at the school
was due to a strong commitment to
inclusion by the administration.
It was important to Binny’s parents
that he go to a Jewish day school like
the rest of his siblings - together with
SHAS, we helped to make that
happen.

A NEW PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

This year, in partnership with Temple Shalom of
Newton and CJP, we tackled another option in
Jewish education that was missing: preschool for
children who could not be accommodated in
typical Jewish preschool settings. While we have
relationships with 35 local Jewish preschools,
offering training and support services, there are
still not enough supports in place to fully
accommodate all students.
So, with a group of 5 students who currently
attend public preschools and a team of educators
and therapists, we launched a 6-week, afternoon
pilot program called “Holiday Detectives”.
Children focused on preparing for Passover and
the Seder, while also learning essential social
skills. Due to overwhelming positive results and
feedback, plans are underway to grow the
program next year.

A PASSOVER SEDER FOR
THE WHOLE FAMILY

Written by Rebecca Redner and released
this January by Behrman House
Publishers, The Gateways Haggadah, was
scooped off the shelves and the first
edition sold out in two months. This is
testament to the fact that our new,
inclusive haggadah filled a need in the
community for a resource to enable all
members of everyone’s family to be able
to successfully participate in the Passover
Seder - no matter what their ability. The
haggadah will go into a second round of
printing this summer and will be available
for even more families, religious schools
and synagogues for Passover 2016.
