TEACHING ENGLISH AS SECOND
LANGUAGE (TESL) (EDUCATION)

Teaching someone is not an easy job or task since we
need to ensure that everyone can gain new knowledge
through it. I do believe that if we are able to
overcome all of the obstacles that we are facing
while we are teaching, it will pass smoothly without us
realizing it. Last but not least, in order to teach
someone, we need to ensure that we are also learning
and are experts on the knowledge that we want to
share with others.

An overall reflection about

microteaching

I have learnt and gained a lot of knowledge throughout the
microteaching’s class where I can use all of the knowledge
in the future when I become an educator. All the processes
that I have gone through in order to complete all of the
projects and tasks have helped me a lot to get the ideas on
what I should do for my internship. I knew that being a
teacher or an educator is not an easy job because we
should know how to ensure that our teaching will give a
positive impact for our students. I also discovered the DSKP
and textbooks for each of the forms and it helped me to
come out with interesting activities for me to conduct in
the classroom. Then, I have learned how to develop
teaching aids and a learning and teaching blog where it will
help us when we become a teacher or an educator. This
subject also helped me to build up my confidence level on
how to interact and communicate very well with our
students. Last but not least, I was grateful because I got the
opportunity to be a part of this class where it made me able
to improve myself to become a better person.

16/02/2022
Before our lecturer, Madam Nirmala started the lesson, she told
us about the overview of this subject and it might help us during
the internship. Then, she informed us about the assessment
during the whole of this semester. Moreover, Madam Nirmala
asked a question about “What is teaching and what is
microteaching?’. During the first lesson of this subject, I have
learnt about the difference between teaching and microteaching
where teaching is about teaching the real students in the
classroom and the duration of teaching should be 60 minutes
while microteaching is a practice of the real teaching and our
classmates being our students. I also learnt that the duration of
microteaching is only for 5-7 minutes and we can control the
class. It is crucial for me to know the difference between those
two since I will go for an internship and I might apply what I have
understood in this subject.

18/02/2022
During the tutorial class, I learned about the DSKP and it allowed me to
understand that DSKP not only helps us to share the knowledge but it
also helps us to guide the students to do self-directed learning because
there is no more spoon feeding to the students. Besides, I also learned
that we need to look for the correct information before we teach our
students and we have to make sure that the students need to be the
critical thinkers. Moreover, I learned about the relationship between
CEFR and KSSM. Based on my understanding, I have understood that
CEFR is only for English subject while KSSM covers everything and
we incorporated CEFR into KSSM. Madam Nirmala also covered the
lesson about the relationship between Content Standard and Learning
Standard and I have understood that Content Standard is being used
for the whole year but Learning Standard is more specific in terms of
what the students should learn throughout the English lessons. I also
discovered Cross-Curricular Elements where we should include into
our lesson plan because we want to produce holistic students and to
allow the students to develop all of the four skills and the soft skills.
Lastly, I realized that all of these elements are beneficial and useful for
me because before this I only had some knowledge about them.

23/02/2022
During the lesson, I have gained a lot of knowledge and information
about how to write proper learning objectives in a lesson plan. It is crucial
for a teacher to have the learning objectives in their lesson plans to make
sure that the students achieve all of the objectives that have been set at
the early of the lesson. Besides, it also taught me that having the learning
objectives might help me to ensure that I can monitor what are the
problems that the students have faced during the lesson. I also learnt that
learning objectives need to reflect the learning standard and content
standard that we have decided to teach the students. Moreover, the
learning outcomes that we have decided or target for the students to
achieve should make the students know, be able to do or value them. The
objectives that we have created must include all of the 5 elements which
are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-based (SMART).
Madam Nirmala also mentioned that we need to come out with at least 3
objectives (2 cognitive & 1 psychomotor) or (2 cognitive & 1 affective).
Lastly, the statement of learning objectives that I have learned need to
include the ABCD formula: Audience, Behavior, Condition and Degree.

25/02/2022
In this class, I have learnt a lot about how to write a proper
lesson plan which Madam Nirmala had told us to focus on
the format of the lesson plan and it should be not too brief
but we have to make sure that they need more
elaboration. Madam also mentioned that we need to
include class names when we write a lesson plan.
Moreover, we should figure out the theme and topic in the
Scheme of Work for each form that we have to teach.
Then, we should focus only on two skills for one lesson
plan because it might not be enough time for us to
discover all of the skills in a short period of time. When we
want to decide what skills we are going to develop for the
students, we cannot make them on our own but we need
to refer to the scheme of work. The learning mode is
based on the activities that we want to conduct during the
class. We also need to put the main sources which are
textbooks and additional sources such as websites or
additional books.

02/03/2022
During the class, I have learned about set
induction where I notice that set induction is one
of the important elements in the lesson plan. It is
because the students will notice and be excited if
the teacher knows how to start the class by
getting their attention using the materials that we
bring to the class such as relia or volcano.
Moreover, set induction should be meaningful
and interesting in order to avoid the students
from getting bored in the class in the first place
before the teacher moves to the next stage of the
lesson plan.

04/03/2022
During the tutorial class, madam had asked us
to do a task where we needed to write the
learning objectives and post the task on the
padlet. Then, madam gave me feedback about
the learning objectives that I have written. She
told me that what I have done is correct but I
need to make the learning objectives shorter
and it should not be too much of wording.
Then, she also reviewed the other's work and
gave feedback until the class ended.

09/03/2022
In this class, I have learnt about the importance of
teaching aids in a classroom where we should
know whether they are suitable to be used in
class or outside the class. As a teacher, we
should be able to create something that can
attract the students’ attention in order to ensure
they are focused while we are teaching them.
Then, after Madam Nirmala finished with her
lecture regarding this topic, she put us in a
breakout room and we had to come out with 5
different types of teaching aids.

18/03/2022
As we are not done with the other’s mock
teaching for the set induction. We were
required to join the class and be the students to
the one who was presenting their parts. Then,
Madam Nirmala picked two persons to give the
feedback and it continued until the class ended.

23/03/2022
In this class, I have learnt about the stimulus variation
where I have to know how I can engage with the students
by asking them a few questions so that they can interact
and communicate in the classroom. The classroom
management is also one of the important elements where
we should know about the environment such as the
arrangement of chairs and tables. Madam Nirmala also
mentioned that we need to take action if the students are
noisy. For example, we can walk around and ask
someone to volunteer when we ask a question.

25/03/2022
In this class, Madam had continued with the mock
teaching and it was a physical class. We also
need to become the students when the others are
presenting their set induction. Then, we need to
give feedback based on what they have
presented.

30/03/2022
In this class, I have learnt how to use the questioning
techniques. I have learnt that there are a lot of questioning
techniques that I can use in my class. We should ask
questions that are relevant to the lesson. Then, we need to
look at their level of proficiency but the questions should
allow the students to use their critical thinking. Moreover, we
need to wait for the students to answer the questions where
we want the students to get engaged with us. The questions
that we create should be from easy to hard level and we
should make it not ambiguous. In order for the students to
answer the question, we can directly pick the students who
should answer the questions or we can pick them at random
since we are looking for their responses. The example
questions that we can use to ask the students are WH
questions, HOTS questions, close-ended and open-ended
questions. When the students have responded to our
questions, we should use the reinforcement and probing
techniques.

01/04/2022
In this tutorial class, madam asked us to show
how to use stimulus variation and questioning
techniques for our presentation. I have
volunteered to do it first where I show all of them
a video before I introduce the topic. Then, I
prepared a few questions that related to the topic
chosen. Then I got the feedback from my
classmates on the techniques that I have used
and the class continued with other’s
presentations regarding the task given.

20/04/2022
In this class, I have learnt about the reinforcement
strategies where we need to use for the closure. The
reinforcement strategies that we apply will allow the
students to remember more. Then, I will encourage them
to give feedback and motivate them. We should focus on
the behavior that we want to encourage or discourage the
students. We should praise them if they answer our
questions correctly and the most important thing is we
need to be fair with every student. Madam also covered
the negative reinforcement where we need to ensure their
unpleasant behavior can be removed and it does not
seem like a punishment for them so that they are not
doing it again at another time. We should not give money
or food as a reward because it might be harmful for them.
Lastly, we should not try to buy things for them where we
need to spend much of our money.

22/04/2022
As for this tutorial class, madam had
refreshed the topic about reinforcement
strategies. Then, we continued with an
activity where we can use any topic and apply
the reinforcement strategies that we have
learnt when we are presenting. Madam used
to spin the wheel in order to pick up the
students randomly. The activity continued
until the class ended.

26/04/2022
As for the replacement class, madam had taught us
about the closure where we need to do it as our next
mockteaching of the lesson plan. The closure is
important for us to recap the lesson. In order to recap
the lesson in 3 to 5 minutes, we can use the summary
as the closure for a lesson where we include the
important facts about the topic that we have taught
them. We also can include the preview of the next
lesson. Then, we can do an activity at the first and
proceed with a Q & A session. Lastly, we can also ask
them to watch a video about the lesson or we can give
them a link to a website or article.

29/04/2022
In this class, madam asked us to do a
demonstration of a closure and we were
divided into the breakout room. Then, we
need to choose one topic that we have never
tried before and it can be from form 1 - 5. We
need to demonstrate it for about 5 minutes.
Then, we have to create with our own
strategies and make sure the students are
having fun. After the breakout room session
ended, the presentation started and it
continued til the class ended.

11/05/2022
In this class, I have learnt about the lesson plan
where we need to include all of the skills. Madam
told us that form 1 and form 2 students are more
into listening and speaking skills. Then, in our
lesson plan, it does not need to be 3 activities
since we need to follow their level of proficiency.
As for the complementary skill, it should be at the
activity 3. As for each stage for each skill, we need
to ensure that the elements of fun must be there
and it must be related to the topic that we have
taught them. Lastly, the lesson plan that we have
created can be changed and flexible.

.

PROJECT 1

As for Project 1 where my group members and I were required to create the teaching
aids and we need to do a presentation about what we have done. Madam instructed us
to come out with one teaching aid for each skill and create 3 different activities based
on it. Each teaching aid had their own type (Visual, Audio, Audio Visual, Online Material
& Realia). We have presented the topic that we have chosen which was from the Form
4 textbook: Globetrotting. Then, we proceeded with the presentation of the teaching
aids that we have created and Madam Nirmala gave positive feedback on what we have
done. She said that she loved the teaching aids and activities that we have created but
we should bring the teaching aids physically to show them to everyone. I have learnt
that creating teaching aids on our own can improve our thinking and creative skills in
order to ensure that they are going to give us benefits when we are teaching the
students because we notice that students nowadays prefer to have the teaching aids
that can attract them into the learning. As for project 1(Task B) where we were required
to create a teaching and learning blog. We can choose any topic and it should be based
on the CEFR and DSKP. My group mates have come out with 10 activities with 4
language skills and the chosen topic was from Form 5: Topic 4: Shopping Therapy. We
also need to include the relevant content standard, learning standard and learning
objectives for each skill and activity. All of the activities should be based on one topic
only. I have learnt a lot while completing the blog where I was able to use my creativity
and critical thinking skills. It was because I wanted to make sure that the blog is useful
for the learners and the design should not be too crowded. So, I have done it together
with my group mates and they were helpful even though we faced some problems but
we managed to complete the project given. I was grateful and happy because our
lecturer loved the design of our blog but we need to make some changes as for the
instructions of the activity.

PROJECT 2

As for the project 2, I was required to prepare a lesson plan where it was only the set
induction part. Then, Madam Nirmala asked us to show how we conduct the set
induction. Based on what I have done, Thiru and Kaushik gave me a few comments
about the way I conducted the set induction. They both agreed that I managed to
engage with the students where I did ask how they are doing. Moreover, Madam
Nirmala told me that the topic that I had chosen was related to the university students
and it was an interesting topic for me to teach the students. As per mention, Madam
advised me to explain a little bit about the learning objectives and I should not only
show it to the students without telling them. As for the presentation stage, we need to
record ourselves using the online platform together with our group members where
they act as our students. I started to present first and I have taught all of them about the
5 best places in Malaysia they should visit. In order to test their understanding about
what I have taught, I also included a few questions about the topic. Based on what I
have presented, I got positive feedback from my group members where they agreed
that I have fulfilled all of the criterias that madam had set for us. Then, we have
continued with the other group members and we also give the feedback based on what
they have presented. As for the mockteaching where we need to present about our
closure of the lesson plan that we have done. We need to record ourselves when we
are doing the mock teaching. As for the closure part of my lesson plan, I asked the
students to answer the question using the Mentimeter and they need to justify their
answer by stating the reason why they gave that answer. I also asked a question
regarding the topic and I gave them a website link where it is for their additional
information. Lastly, before I ended the class, I put a Youtube link on the Zoom chatbox
to give a preview about the next lesson that they are going to learn. After that, we
proceeded with other group members to present their parts for the closure and we
received the feedback about the mock teaching that we have done. I felt glad and
excited because everyone had done very well for their parts.

THANK YOU!
