BY Tami Dixon DIRECTED BY Matt M. Morrow UP NEXT AT CITY THEATRE JANUARY 13–FEBRUARY 18, 2024 In 2012, Tami Dixon sat on the sidewalks of the South Side of Pittsburgh asking residents to tell her stories. The resulting one woman play delighted audiences and was described as “dazzling” and “a big, fat evening of bliss” (City Paper). Ten years later, Dixon returns to the streets of the South Side to revisit her vivid set of tales and explore how the community where City Theatre resides has changed. MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY 3 FROM THE CO-ARTISTIC DIRECTORS Thank you for choosing City Theatre! While the weather outside is frightful, inside we have prepared a delightful spin on a classic that will warm even the coldest heart. Maybe you have noticed that our 49th season is adorned with stories that reinvestigate the familiar. Using Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” as inspiration, Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley shines a light on the women of Austen’s imagination. Set two years after the ending of the beloved novel, middle sister Miss Mary Bennet is the focus of this comedic sequel, much to her chagrin. Playwrights Lauren Gunderson (The Revolutionists) and Margot Melcon combined forces to unwrap an old present and gave it new life. In a promotional interview, Margot once explained their impetus as “We wanted it to feel like there is hope in the world.” This hope not only resonates inside the story but also lives in the making of this production. Kyle Haden, last seen on City Theatre’s stage in Stephen Belber’s We Are Among Us, returns this time as director and has brought along some of the brightest emerging talents of our region. This entirely local cast all share the unique experience of making their City Theatre mainstage debut with his production! Many on the stage are alumni of City Theatre’s Young Playwrights Festival and others are current students in Carnegie Mellon University’s prestigious School of Drama. Connecting with local artists and organizations in this specific way allows us to truly live out the values of City Theatre. When selecting our season, the co-artistic director team asks ourselves “Why this play at this time”? While we strive to bring you quality entertainment we also hope to speak to the present moment. Women’s rights and freedoms are integral to a healthy and thriving society. Themes in this story surround the choices of love, marriage, and singledom. Yet five strong women live at the center of this story and the decisions they make surrounding matters of the heart are an inspiration to a modern audience. Using Jane Austen’s charm and wit as a launchpad, this production is a welcome reminder of the power of love. In this time of giving, give the gift of reading by supporting our book donation drive supporting Literacy Pittsburgh’s Family Literacy Library Wishlist, whose mission to improve literacy in our community is both admirable and necessary. We have also partnered with local bookstores City Books and Stories Like Me to make this Wishlist a reality. You can find additional information on our website about how to support their work. Once again, thank you for choosing to spend part of your holiday season with us at City Theatre. We hope you leave filled with cheer and merriment that will carry you into a prosperous new year. 10 MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY It is a truth universally acknowledged that an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice must be in want of a plain Mary Bennet with a disagreeable personality. Until now. Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley is a modern continuation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, the original enemies to lovers rom-com. First published in 1813, Austen’s novel follows the Bennet sisters’ misadventures through early 19th century courtship. And for the last two centuries Mary Bennet, the middle sister, has either been overlooked entirely at best, or, at worst, derided amongst fans and scholars. Mary is described by Austen herself as “being the only plain one in the family” and having “neither genius nor taste.” Fan site the Republic of Pemberley even topped their “The Jane Austen Punishments List,” with “an evening at a recital given by Mary Bennet.” Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley is part of a larger explosion in the last 15 years of Pride and Prejudice fanfiction aimed at giving Mary Bennet her due. MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY 11 Goodreads.com curates a non-exhaustive list entitled “A Little Love for Mary Bennet,” which includes 74 contemporary books featuring an alternate look at the middle Miss Bennet. Of course, Austen is no stranger to adaptations and updates with modern works including; Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Death Comes to Pemberley, and of course Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (which is remarkably faithful to the source material). However, in an article for The Atlantic1, Megan Garber postulates that “the current renaissance of Mary Bennet is literary revisionism that suggests a more sweeping ethical project—one that celebrates the dignity of the marginalized.” She goes on to make comparisons to other famous works of adaptation, like Wicked and Hamilton. “Mary Bennet in P&P is woefully underwritten,” says co-playwright Margot Melcon in an interview with American Theatre2. “There is very little attention paid to her in the text, but there is enough to see who she is and how she functions in the larger scheme of this family.” This has left many writers the freedom to imagine possible futures for Mary. Melcon continues, “She’s smart, capable, awkward—maybe a little bit nerdy—and she is rejecting the traditional values of the society that she is living in and forging her own path.” Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley premiered in 2016 and featured in the top 10 most produced works nation-wide of the following two seasons. It was an answer to the question: What does the American theater need? A presumptive question by the admission of co-playwright Lauren Gunderson. Working together with Melcon, they arrived at the conclusion “You know what people love? Jane Austen. You know what people really love? Christmas and Jane Austen.” Several scribbled-over Starbucks napkins and a road trip later, they had the beginnings of the American theater’s next great holiday perennial. Miss Bennet is the first of three plays the duo would go on to write featuring the cast of Pride and Prejudice with The Wickhams in 2019 and Georgiana and Kitty in 2021. — Dramaturg Lindsay Barr 1 Garber, Megan. “There’s Something About Mary Bennet.” The Atlantic, 20 Dec. 2018. 2 Considine, Allison. “A Very Austen Christmas with ‘Miss Bennet.’” AMERICAN THEATRE, 18 Dec. 2017
