SOMEWHERE OVER THE BORDER 3 FROM THE CO-ARTISTIC DIRECTORS Welcome Back! We are thrilled to launch City Theatre’s 49th Season with friends old and new. The production you’re about to see of Somewhere Over the Border is written and composed by Brian Quijada. If Brian’s name sounds familiar that’s because he starred in his one-man, live-looped show Where Did We Sit on the Bus? at City in 2019. Joining Brian on this production are two artists new to our audience — director Laura Alcalá Baker and music director Michael Meketa who, together, helm a stellar cast, band, and creative team of returning and first-time collaborators from Pittsburgh and around the country. Tonight’s production also marks the second collaboration between City Theatre and the Pittsburgh CLO. Somewhere Over the Border was developed in CLO’s SPARK Festival and we’re eager to deepen our organizational partnership and cement Pittsburgh as a home for exciting new work. Collaboration is a core value of City Theatre’s and more important than ever in building new models for sharing vital stories like the one you’ll see tonight. In fact, we’re joined by a third partner on this production, People’s Light, a fellow LORT theatre located in Malvern, PA outside of Philadelphia. This production will transfer across Pennsylvania for a run at People’s Light in the summer of 2024. Somewhere Over the Border is inspired by Brian’s mother’s journey from El Salvador to the US, remixed through the familiar story of The Wizard of Oz. We’re excited to highlight the work of City Connects community partners the ACLU of Pennsylvania, Casa San Jose, The Latino Community Center, Literacy Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce all whose work supports latiné and immigrant communities in Pittsburgh. As we look toward the rest of City Theatre’s 2023/2024 Season, we will continue to reimagine the familiar — from a holiday sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, to checking back in with Tami Dixon and the South Side, to a critically acclaimed fresh take on Hamlet, to an imagined encounter between Andy Warhol and an Iranian revolutionary. None of this work would be possible without our audiences so whether this is your first show at City, or you’ve been coming since 1975, we thank you for joining us and can’t wait to embark on these five journeys with you. Clare, Marc, and Monteze P.S. We would love to hear from you! Please reach out and share your City Theatre thoughts and stories with us. You can reach us all via email at [email protected] FROM THE CO-ARTISTIC DIRECTORS

The Laguna de Chanmico in El Salvador 10 SOMEWHERE OVER THE BORDER It’s the first day of rehearsal for Brian Quijada’s Somewhere Over the Border. The theater’s rehearsal hall is filled with staff, artists and a large projection of smiling faces joining the room via zoom including Brian, the show’s playwright, lyricist and composer. His face projected on a large screen (not unlike a certain denizen of Oz), Brian explains that the show was inspired by his mother’s journey from El Salvador to the US in the 1970s. To start the process, everyone in the room introduces themselves, their role on the production, and shares something that their mother, grandmother, or another maternal figure in their life gave to them. It’s a celebration of the power of art and the continued gift of a mother’s love. In the musical, we follow Reina, a seventeen-year-old, hailing from Mrs. Quijada’s hometown of Chanmico, El Salvador, who longs for the imagined promise of life in the U.S.A. El Salvador in the 1970s was a complex landscape. The decade saw the country mired in increasing political turmoil, the manifestation of years of civil unrest, an extended legacy of colonization. In July of 1975, students gathered at the University of El Salvador and were met by a violent government response, resulting in the injury and deaths of dozens of students. The massacre marked a turning SOMEWHERE OVER THE BORDER: Reimagining Reality The Laguna de Chanmico in El Salvador

SOMEWHERE OVER THE BORDER 11 point that pushed the country into a brutal civil war that would last for more than a decade. It is against this backdrop that we meet Reina as she makes the fateful decision to travel through Guatemala to Mexico and eventually across the border to San Diego. The friends she meets along the way, join her in search of their own dreams and a certain yellow brick road, paving the way to a new life in America. The real Mrs. Quijada’s story would have been markedly different under America's current immigration policies. According to the Council on Foreign Relations close to 2 million immigrants arrived at the United States southern border in 2022 and 541,000 of those hoping to enter the US originated their journeys in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.1 And like seventeen-year-old Reina, in 2022 the Department of Homeland Security referred 128,904 unaccompanied children to the Office of Refugee Resettlement.2 Only a small number of those arrivals will be afforded the opportunity to obtain permanent residency in the States. These facts and figures are staggering and as we meet Reina, we cannot help but think of all the young women, mothers, and fellow dreamers following in her footsteps today. At the same time, Somewhere Over the Border is rooted in joy and the power of family, love, and determination. It’s a heartwarming nod to the Frank L. Baum’s The Wizard of Oz and, wrapped in song, a salute to Mrs. Quijada’s fortitude. As the cast prepared to launch into the first read through of the script, Director Laura Alcalá Baker grounded the room in these dualities—and we call on you to embrace both the reality of this country’s ongoing immigration crisis and the show’s celebration of Latiné culture and heritage. 1 Source: https://www.cfr.org/article/ten-graphics-explain-us-struggle-migrant-flows-2022 2 https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/uac-program-fact-sheet.pdf Brian Quijada Zooms into first rehearsal (photo courtesy of James McNeel)

DONOR RECOGNITION SOMEWHERE OVER THE BORDER 25 FUNDER SPOTLIGHT: THE DONALD & SYLVIA ROBINSON FAMILY FOUNDATION Donald Robinson (1925 - 2017) Sylvia Robinson (1929 - 2018) The lives and legacy of Donald and Sylvia Robinson continue on through their namesake foundation, The Donald & Sylvia Robinson Family Foundation. Now led by their children and grandchildren, the Foundation has recently made a significant multi-year grant to City Theatre, making it the lead funder behind the organization’s education programming: the Young Playwrights Contest and Young Playwrights Festival. Married for 69 years, Sylvia and Donald shared a life-long interest in the arts, with Sylvia even appearing on stage in the City Theatre New Works Festival and Jewish Community productions, and the foundation supports a wide range of organizations in Pittsburgh as well as Israel. Over the next five years, City Theatre will continue to expand and grow its reach and impact in the lives of middle and high school students throughout Western Pennsylvania due to this extraordinary gift of support. Later this spring, we look forward to a permanent recognition of The Donald and Sylvia Robinson Family Foundation as we re-name our Main Stage theatre stairwell in Sylvia’s honor. Somewhere Over the Border Community Partners: Literacy Pittsburgh offers free educational programs for adults and families in Allegheny County and Beaver County. Casa San José connects, supports, and advocates with and for the Latino community. Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (PMAHCC) is the principal regional advocate for the Hispanic business community’s civic and economic interests. The Latino Community Center empowers, advocates with, and celebrates Latinos in Allegheny County. The ACLU of Pennsylvania is the nation's foremost guardian of liberty. We are a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to defending and protecting our individual rights and personal freedoms. DONOR RECOGNITION
