CLAWS OUT: A Holiday Drag Musical

ClawsOut_Playbill (1)

PROGRAM NOTE

A year ago, Shua Potter and I birthed the original bad girl of the North Pole, Mrs. Rachel
Claus in Santa’s Ted Talk. The drag cabaret act included spoof lyrics, a dazzling
costume change, and Christmas trivia that may or may not have been made up for your
comic pleasure. The performance genre of cabaret has soothed the masses during times
of unrest since 1881. Dramaturg Sarah Ollove explains that “Cabarets tend to pop up in
moments of socio-political upheaval. In moments coming out of or directly leading into
crisis... in moments where people need a release or joy.” I can’t think of a more
appropriate time to use this medium to induce joy, laughter, and clutching of the pearls.
Claws Out: A Holiday Drag Musical is born from the world of cabaret, camp, and drag
performance. Co-writer Shua Potter, composer Doug Levine, and I spent much of the
pandemic sending scenes, lyrics, and melodies to one another in a chain of emails that
run longer than 2020 – and when we dared to bring our heads up from the fog of the
world, we had an original musical. On the surface level, they’re simply feuding queens
vying for the title of Mrs. Santa Claus which comes with perks of youthful looks and a
wardrobe to make any “Real Housewife” jealous. Claws Out on the deeper level is a
commentary on what happens when the world we've come to love is turned upside down
and whether we fight or fly. Rachel fights. Roberta flies. And that’s just the beginning of
their shady journey.

When faced with the reality that our stage show had to become a movie, the design
team quickly adapted to our new circumstances as we directed our creativity to the
digital world. With the mighty talents of a fiercely dedicated creative team, green
screens, and story boards replaced the traditional set and director's prompt book. We set
out to create a piece of work that will certainly deviate from your normal holiday fare.
But nothing is normal this year, so why pretend? Prepare to experience familiar
references of Americana mixed with the bawdy humor that lives in drag clubs wrapped
in a Christmas bow. The only thing missing is your palpable energy which we can't wait
to experience when the time is best and safe. Happy Holidays.

Introducing the “(Re)Open The Red Doors” Campaign

A fundraising initiative for City Theatre’s Future.
The Covid-19 pandemic has been devastating to the arts and culture
sector. City Theatre alone has seen a loss of nearly $2 million in revenues
from contributions, ticket sales, and other sources.

The Red Door Campaign – named after City Theatre’s iconic red doors
on Bingham Street – is the organization’s comeback strategy with a
simple goal:

To ensure that when it is safe to re-open to the public with indoor performances, City
Theatre has the funds necessary to do it right.
Established by the board of directors and members of the its Honorary Board, the Red Door
Campaign represents a fight for the future of City Theatre – it will combat this current global
emergency so that it does not serve as a fatal blow.

The prognosis is good—but only with your help.
Our online content – which has reached over 30,000 households – was experienced by folks
from across the country. We launched a new play commissioning fund and announced the first
recipient of the Kemp Powers Commission Fund for Black Playwrights, Pittsburgh native Ty
Greenwood. We created partnerships with City of Asylum, Point Park University, Alumni Theater
Company, and others, to create and share new plays.
With this release of our first-ever digital media project – the world premiere of Claws Out: A
Holiday Drag Musical, shot in Mr. Rogers’ old studio at WQED — we continue to innovate and
adapt. Then, just after the New Year, you and the rest of the country will experience the concert
film version of F*7thGrade and the virtual return of our Young Playwrights Festival.
With the early success of the Red Door Campaign, City Theatre has restored a majority of its staff
and invested over $75,000 in direct fees and payments to artists.

None of us know how long the crisis will be with us. But when it is over, we have every intention
of coming back stronger than ever.
Please join Campaign Chairs David Betts, Carol Brown, Judy Cheteyan, Alex Condron, and Beth
Newbold, as well as the board and staff, in supporting City Theatre with a tax-deductible
contribution today.

Your support means the world to us. And we need it now more than ever.

DONOR RECOGNITION
THE ANNUAL FUND
Each season, we go on a journey. You take a chance on plays you’ve never

seen before, often by playwrights you might not know. Our pledge to you is that we scour the country for
the very best work possible—plays that speak truthfully, passionately, and urgently (and, of course,
entertainingly) about the here and now. New plays are risky, but they’re filled with the excitement of the
unknown, too. City Theatre is deeply grateful to our community for helping to sustain our theatre year
after year. Donors acknowledged here made gifts between July 1, 2018 - December 20, 2019. Every
effort has been made to accurately record and acknowledge all donors. If your name is listed incorrectly,
