A modern revamp of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Fat Ham follows Juicy, a queer, pensive, young Black man finding his way in the world, when the ghost of his father demands Juicy avenges his murder. Set at the family cookout, this “hilarious yet profound tragedy smothered in comedy” (The New York Times) examines love, loss, and a particular set of daddy issues.

SOUTH SIDE STORIES REVISITED 3 FROM THE CO-ARTISTIC DIRECTORS One of City Theatre’s core values is Community. We believe in nurturing and sustaining the multiple communities that grow around live theatre- audiences, artists, and staff. We believe that our work should reflect who we are and where we live. Ten years ago, Tami Dixon’s South Side Stories was born from this commitment. In the residency that led up to the production, Tami interviewed hundreds of locals to draw a portrait of a neighborhood in transition. Her tour de force performance captured the spirit of our immediate community, with a colorful cast of characters proud of their history, resilient, and determined. The production was a huge success (and was revived the following year) as it resonated beyond the Flats and Slopes as a portrait of Pittsburgh itself. When the idea of inviting Tami to revisit the work began to gain traction, we initially thought that she would add a few more interviews and the core of the piece would be the original script. But things have changed in the community and for Tami personally, and she wanted to capture that. We added hundreds of hours of transcript interviews, several workshops, and a public sharing of the drafts with discussion afterwards. This performance is the result of that year-long “revisiting” and the changes that have transpired. The spectrum of characters is funny, sad, and sometimes inspirational. Just like our neighborhood. And now we welcome you, our larger community, to be a part of the process. Theatre isn’t complete until the artists share their work with an audience. You have a role to play in observing, reflecting and feeding back through your response. They say that all theatre is local. It is also a path to understanding the universal aspect of the communities that make and enjoy live theatre. Marc Masterson Clare Drobot Monteze Freeland

10 SOUTH SIDE STORIES REVISITED Starting in 2008, Playwright and Performer Tami Dixon and Director Matt Morrow began their South Side Stories odyssey; interviewing neighborhood residents and creating a beloved show that ran twice at City Theatre, with a final extended run in 2013. As the artistic staff planned this season, we asked the pair to revisit the script and explore how the neighborhood has changed in the intervening years. As we launch into South Side Stories Revisited, we asked Tami and Matt to share a few of their own South Side connections and invite you to explore the neighborhood through your very own bingo adventure. If you had to choose one word to describe the South Side, what would it be? MM: Gritty TD: Tenacious The South Side Stories Odyssey

SOUTH SIDE STORIES REVISITED 11 What is your first South Side memory? TD: I was taking the bus from Oakland to South Side for my first audition at City Theatre and I was standing in the aisle when some kid grabbed my butt and ran off the bus. And I thought to myself, ‘Okay South Side, you’re that kind of town!’ MM: Shopping for furniture for my first apartment at the vintage stores. I found an amazing 60’s red crush velvet couch! How about a go-to meal in the neighborhood? MM: Mushroom pasta or the seafood special at Dish. I think the olive oil they use is their secret! TD: The mushroom consomme at Cafe du Jour is healing magic! Do you have a favorite building or piece of public art? TD: Every time I see Tim Kaulen’s four DinoGeese as I drive over the 10th Street Bridge I get so happy. They appeared in the South Side in the mid 90’s, the same time I did. MM: My favorite thing on the South Side is probably the Bike path. I also love exploring/traversing the stairs up the South Side Slopes. What was a neighborhood fact you discovered working on South Side Stories Revisited: MM: Phat Man Dee’s Wedding sounds like an epic historical event! TD: Carson Street holds historic status, it’s one of the largest Victorian main streets in the US and we don’t have a designated business manager. Share a word or phrase from the interviews that resonated with you: TD: “To get to paradise, you have to go further. To get to what’s waiting, you have to go just beyond where you want to stop.” MM: “I’m taking my power back. I’m taking my space back. I’m taking my art back.” –Aki
