“I would never have said confluence in my life if we did not live in Pittsburgh.”
--Pops

Defined as both the junction of two rivers and the act or process of merging, the word
confluence could very well be used to describe the development of Jim McManus’s
The Rivers Don’t Know. As Pops, a Somali refugee, father to sixteen-year-old daughter
Khadija, and recent widower points out, confluence is also a word indelibly linked to
Pittsburgh. The play is a celebration of ways immigration shaped and continues to shape
Pittsburgh, and this production is the culmination of collaborations between CityTheatre,
Cornerstone Theater Company, the Pittsburgh Playhouse at Point Park University, years of
alliance with community partners All for All powered by the Global Switchboard, ARYSE,
Global Minds, Literacy Pittsburgh, JFCS Refugee & Immigrant Services, Welcoming
Pittsburgh, and the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, and generous support provided
by a Allegheny Regional Asset District’s RADical Impact Grant.
The project was in fact inspired by several community partnerships the theater had
developed with local immigrant support and advocacy organizations. These rich
collaborations motivated the design of a truly community-engaged project that
brought in national connections with Cornerstone Theater Company Artistic Director
Michael John Garcés, Donora native and playwright Jim McManus, and partnered six
core organizational partners to explore the rich communities present in Pittsburgh
and how present-day experiences compared with those of the city’s historic immigrant
populations.
In December of 2019, work on the project officially launched with a residency for Michael
and Jim. That initial visit included story circles and mapping exercises with Global
Minds and ARYSE high school students, research trips to the Heinz History Center Detre
Archives, meetings with Welcoming Pittsburgh staffers in the office of Mayor Peduto,
pierogi making in the basement of St. Valdimir’s church, conversations with adult ESL
students at Literacy Pittsburgh, discussions with staff members and refugee support
groups at JFCS, an evening with community leaders organized by All for All and the
World Affairs Council, and much more. It was followed by a subsequent visit in the late
winter of 2020 with plans for an intensive to share Cornerstone’s methodology with
Pittsburgh community members. And then of course, the COVID pandemic stopped the
project, theater, and the world in its tracks.
Artists are nothing if not inventive and using a newfound acumen for Zoom, we were
able to continue these conversations and interviews digitally. From there, Jim wrote
an initial draft which was workshopped online and then performed in a series of
readings soliciting community member feedback, involving our partners directly in
the development process. Auditions were held in June, open to community members,
regardless of previous performing experience and a design team was built to realize the
play’s technical elements, including partnerships with local artisans to create props for
the production. Before each performance, the lobby is filled with vendors from across the
city and will feature a performance by a local immigrant artist. The entire development,
rehearsal, and production process has been built to forge new bonds.
Undoubtably a play exploring immigration and migration in Pittsburgh could exist
in a multiple of volumes—there are so many stories in this city and no one work of
fiction can encompass them all. Rather The Rivers Don’t Know is a fictional distillation
of conversations and an invitation for audience members to forge connections with
their neighbors. As guests in this evening’s ESL class, we hope you will recognize the
importance of community in ensuring that the city we live in is welcoming to anyone,
no matter their native tongue or country of origin, who happens to stumble upon this
confluence of three rivers.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

ARYSE began in 2013 as a grassroots effort led by local refugee youth and
college students who realized that the students they were tutoring, low-income
immigrant youth, were falling through the cracks. We organized the only
summer program in the region specifically tailored to the needs of immigrant
youth, which centered literacy development, community building, and
storytelling through the arts. Since then, thanks to the power of a passionate
team of volunteers, we’ve grown from serving 25 youth through one summer
program to reaching nearly 200 youth through 4 programs throughout the
school year. Our vision is for ARYSE to become an international model for
supporting immigrant youth as they transition into their new lives.
THE ALL FOR ALL COALITION POWERED BY THE GLOBAL SWITCHBOARD
is an action-oriented collaborative network that aims to advance immigrant
inclusion to create a welcoming region for all. The coalition’s action framework
is anchored in the ongoing implementation of the Immigrant Community
Blueprint: Helping Immigrants Thrive in Allegheny County and designed to
adapt to new and unanticipated challenges shared by the group.
GLOBAL MINDS INITIATIVE is a for-youth, by-youth organization created to
combat the issues of cultural intolerance and discrimination through an after
school tutoring program between English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) and
Native English Speaking (NES) students. Global Minds serves as an educational
support system for ESL students, while educating NES students about other
cultures, in order to create more globally minded young leaders.
LITERACY PITTSBURGH offers free educational programs for adults and
families in Allegheny County and Beaver County. Each year, we help nearly
5,000 people in the Greater Pittsburgh area improve their reading, writing,
math, English language, digital literacy, and workplace skills. Adult literacy
classes and tutoring move students from learning to earning and help them
succeed as workers, parents, and neighbors.

AUDIENCE INVITATION

An Invitation to Participate:
By walking through our doors, we invite you to join our
community. You are welcome here.
Part of our mission is to challenge and engage a diverse
audience.
Feel free to laugh. To cry. To react honestly.
This is live theater. Our artists are living and breathing right in
front of you -- They need your reactions, not your distractions.
Bring your full self, but please ensure your actions do not harm
other audience members.
Please be an audience member that joins with others, that has
compassion for the experiences of others.
We’re in the same space. At the same time. This Is community.
2020 taught us that community is a privilege. 2020 also
reinforced that we need to do better. Historically, theater has a
culture of exclusivity.
Part of our anti-racism work at City Theatre is to break down
barriers that limit access to art. We ask you to join us in this
imperative work. We invite you to get to know our core values
and to read our organizational code of conduct.
We want to hold ourselves accountable. If you have a negative
experience in our space, we want to know. There are multiple
ways to call us in. You can:
• Speak to a house manager
• Or any employee present with a City Theatre name tag
• Email the staff EDIA committee at comment@

citytheatrecompany.org
We’re here. We’re listening.
Let’s build a better community together.
