In An Untitled New Play By Justin Timberlake, Playwright and
Composer Matt Schatz serves up a delightful skewering of one new
play’s path to the stage. It often takes years for a new work, especially a new

musical, to make it from a playwright’s first words on paper to opening night. Untitled’s
journey could be a case of art imitating life; this long simmering partnership launched in
2018, when the CLO invited City Theatre to workshop the play-turned-musical as part of
the SPARK Festival. Three workshops, two dramaturgs, several awards, and one
postponed production later, the script will finally make its world premiere, supported by
both organizations, on Pittsburgh’s South Side.

But far from the drama you’ll see on stage, the behind-the-scenes collaboration between
City Theatre and CLO exemplifies the supportive theater community in Pittsburgh. As arts
organizations rebuild following the forced intermission of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is
thoughtful communication and partnerships that make new productions possible. While
our stages remained dark, performing arts organizations throughout the city met monthly
to discuss strategies for returning. These meetings fostered conversations of how
organizational resources could be shared and, ultimately, CLO and City Theatre were able
to team up and bring Untitled to life across the river.

The production is also a homecoming for many members of the creative team—from
playwright Matt Schatz (2018’s The Burdens) to director Reginald L. Douglas (former
Artistic Producer at City Theatre). Plus, we welcome back designers Britton Mauk (scenic),
Andy Ostrowski (lights), Zachary Beattie-Brown (sound), and Dominque Fawn Hill
(costumes), along with music director Douglas Levine (who you might have caught in the
digital production of Claws Out: A Holiday Drag Musical last year). And of course, Julianne
Avolio is back on the Main Stage where she was last seen in Cry It Out, the run of which
had to be cut short in March 2020 because of—well, you know.... And finally: we are
equally excited to welcome new faces to the stage and rehearsal hall, forging
relationships with artists both near and far.

All that’s missing in this recipe is an audience. We’re thrilled to welcome City Theatre and
CLO patrons alike to the theater and grateful for your support of new works and
longstanding collaborations.

audience. Instead, the

long road before rehearsal
or performance — during
season planning. In that period, the magic of theater looks
like any other office job: a series of phone calls, meetings,
and emails. Of course, in UNTITLED, those seemingly
mundane tasks carry exceptionally high (and exceptionally
funny) stakes, as the staff of one theater wrestles with whether to program new
unheralded artists or succumb to the siren song of commercialism and celebrity.

UNTITLED captures the behind-the-scenes of the behind-the-scenes. But even
before the timeline we see in the show, in which a play is about to be programmed
into a theater’s season, a play or musical’s journey is often already many years in
the making.

The show you see on opening night is almost never a first draft. Instead, it’s the
culmination of a playwright’s years-long process of writing and rewriting to find
the story’s strongest iteration — and often, submitting and resubmitting their
work to find the right theatrical home.

Some playwrights revise their work alone, but for many, the process of rewriting
is informed by conversation and collaboration, usually called “development.”

Dramaturgs, directors, and artistic directors are
often integral parts of the development process,
offering feedback on drafts, facilitating artist
residencies, or leading readings and workshops.

Certainly the past 18+ months have been an
especially challenging time to bring new works to
the stage, but in this case, collaboration has won
out and AN UNTITLED NEW PLAY BY
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE will make its world
premiere! Here’s a map of some of its stops along
the way.

• February 2016: Matt Schatz writes the first draft of UNTITLED, then a play
with one song, through a Playwrights Union writing challenge. The script is
shared in June as part of their First Peek reading series.

• April 2017: UNTITLED is a finalist for the Eugene O’Neill National
Playwrights Conference.

• January-March 2018: Matt composes additional songs, turning UNTITLED
into a musical.

• April 2018: City Theatre and Pittsburgh CLO collaborate on a reading of
UNTITLED in CLO’s SPARK Festival of New Musicals.

• January 2019: Pittsburgh CLO and City Theatre team up for a second
developmental reading of UNTITLED in Pittsburgh.

• May 2019: UNTITLED is featured at the ASCAP Foundation Musical
Theatre Workshop in Los Angeles.

• December 2019: UNTITLED wins the ASCAP Foundation Harold Arlen
Musical Theater Award.

• September 2019: Pittsburgh CLO announces the Kara Cabaret Series and the
world premiere of

JULIANNE AVOLIO (Beth) is overwhelmed to be back on the City Theatre stage,

right where she left it in March of 2020 as Lina in Cry It Out. After working on this
piece for some years at both City and Pittsburgh CLO, Julianne is delighted to finally
share it with the world, and is beyond grateful to Matt and Reg for helping her find
– and value – her voice. Thank you to the audiences who have waited patiently to

MELESSIE CLARK (Liz Cohen) is thrilled to be making her City Theatre debut!

A Pittsburgh native and Point Park University alumnus with a B.F.A. in Musical
Theatre, Melessie was most recently seen in Quantum Theatre’s The Current War and
Pittsburgh CLO’s The Wizard of Oz. Other PCLO credits include Grease, Rock of Ages,
The Wedding Singer, and Gypsy. Melessie has also been seen in Little Shop of Horrors
and School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play (Pittsburgh Public Theater), A Sign
of the Times (Goodspeed Opera House and Delaware Theatre Company), Dreamgirls
(Alhambra Theatre), After Midnight (Norwegian Cruiselines), An Octoroon (Kinetic
Theatre), Dulcy (Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company), and The Old Settler (New
Horizon Theater). TV and film credits include “Farm Queens” on Great American Country, the short film We Are
Nowhere, the upcoming Netlfix series Archive 81 and feature film directed by Billy Porter. Melessie will be per-

LARA HAYHURST (El Yamasaki Brooks, Dance Captain) she/her: Lara

is incredibly grateful to be onstage again and thrilled that her first show back incor-
porates her two greatest loves: the creative experience and boy bands. Lara was seen
in the January 2020 workshop production of Untitled with Pittsburgh CLO and is

PATTI KELLY (Production Stage Manager) is thrilled to return to City

Theatre after 19 months! Having been with the company for over half of its lifetime,
some of Patti’s favorite shows at City Theatre include The Old Man and the Old Moon,
The Royale, Hand to God, The 39 Steps, Marcus; or The Secret of Sweet, Hedwig and
the Angry Inch, Compleat Female Stage Beauty, Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of
Oscar Wilde, Molly Sweeney, The Baltimore Waltz, and Our Country’s Good. Other

ALEX MANALO (Movement Coordinator) is esctatic to be working on this

production. She is a graduate of Point Park University with a BA in Musical Theatre.
She has worked with several theater companies throughout the city such as CLO,
MTAP, Pittsburgh Public, Front Porch Theatrics, Pittsburgh Playhouse, Arcade Comedy
Theater, RealTime Interventions, and City Theatre. Some of her favorite credits include
Christmas Carol (Fan/Alice), Big Fish (Mermaid), Liat (South Pacific), and Assistant
Choreographer (Wizard of Oz). When not performing, she can be found teaching
dance and theater arts for CLO Academy of Musical Theater programs or choreo-
graphing for local high schools and community theaters. Alex wants to thank the creative team, cast, and crew

OLIVIA O’CONNOR (Co-Dramaturg) is a dramaturg and writer based in

Pittsburgh, PA. She’s currently the Manager of New Work Development at Pittsburgh
CLO and previously served as the Artistic Associate at Roundabout Theatre Company.

RONA SIDDIQUI (Orchestrator) is a composer/lyricist based in NYC. She is a

recipient of the Jonathan Larson Grant and Billie Burke Ziegfeld award and was
named one of Broadway Women’s Fund’s Women to Watch. Her show Salaam Medina:
Tales of a Halfghan, an autobiographical comedy about growing up bi-ethnic in
America, had a reading at Playwrights Horizons (dir. by Raja Feather Kelly). Other
musicals include One Good Day, Hip Hop Cinderella, and The Tin. Arena Stage com-
misioned Rona to write a piece for their 2021 Arena Riffs series. She is the recipient
of the ASCAP Harold Adamson Lyric Award, the ASCAP Foundation Mary Rodgers/
Lorenz Hart Award and ASCAP Foundation/Max Dreyfus Scholarship. She has writ-ten pieces for Wicked’s 16th
anniversary commemoration Flying Free, 24 Hour Musicals, Prospect Theater Company, The Civilians, and has
performed concerts of her work at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Feinstein’s/54 Below.
She is currently part of Musical Theatre Factory’s Makers Residency and Ars Nova’s Vision Residency. Rona music
directed the Off-Broadway Pulitzer Prize-winning A Strange Loop for which she received an Obie along with the
cast and creative team (Playwrights Horizons). She has orchestrated for Broadway Records, Broadway
Backwards, NAMT and Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera.

JAMES MCNEEL (Managing Director) joined City Theatre as its Managing

Director in January 2015 and has overseen the organization through a period of
extraordinary change and transformation, while becoming a trusted and recognized
leader in the arts management field both locally and nationally. He came to
Pittsburgh after four seasons in the same role at the Contemporary American Theater
Festival in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, where he was integral in the development
and production of 20 new plays (including 10 world premieres and four commis-
sions). Previously, he served as Literature Specialist at the National Endowment for the Arts, focusing on grants
to nonprofit presses, magazines, and literary organizations, as well as awards to individual poets, writers, and
literary translators. While at the NEA he also worked on the development of such national initiatives as Operation
Homecoming, Shakespeare in American Communities, Poetry Out Loud, and the National Book Festival. In 2005,
James moved to New York City where he was General Manager and project consultant for the arts management
firm, The Center for Creative Resources. At the Center, he worked with numerous individual artists and arts
organization in all facets of institutional development and was a team leader in the feasibility study, opening,
and first year management and operation of The Times Center, owned by The New York Times Company and
designed by Renzo Piano. In addition, he was Director of Development and Marketing at the historic Cherry Lane
Theatre, located in Greenwich Village. James holds a B.A. degree from Shepherd University and studied Arts
Management in the Master of Arts program at American University. He currently serves on the boards and/or
committees of the South Side Chamber of Commerce; National New Play Network (finance); Greater Pittsburgh
Arts Council (advocacy); and the League of Resident Theaters (LORT), the largest association of its kind in the
country. He chairs a consortium of over 25 different venues and organizations, organized by GPAC, that has met
monthly in response to Covid-19.

MARC MASTERSON (Co-Artistic Director) has been a leader in the

American Theatre for over 35 years with a demonstrated track record of artistic
accomplishment, civic engagement, and organizational development. He
previously served as Artistic Director of City Theatre for 20 years and helped to
build the organization and its current facilities on the South Side. In a
distinguished career he has commissioned and developed over 100 world
premieres including Pulitzer finalists, Broadway and Off-Broadway successes and
notable works in the American theatre canon including A Doll’s House, Part 2 by
Lucas Hnath, The Parisian Woman by Beau Willimon, Vietgone by Qui Nguyen, Mr. Wolf by Rajiv Joseph and
Office Hour by Julia Cho. More than 50% of the new plays he has produced were written by women. Previously,
he served as Artistic Director of South Coast Repertory in California where he conceived and launched two
major initiatives for diverse voices in the American theatre, the CrossRoads commissioning program and the
Dialogos bi-lingual site-specific project. He served for 11 years as artistic director of Actors Theatre of
Louisville where he produced more than 200 productions and the Humana Festival of New American Plays.
Plays directed at the Humana Festival include works by Charles Mee, Wendell Berry, Craig Wright, Eric Coble,
Adam Bock, Gina Gionfriddo, Melanie Marnich, and Rick Dresser. Recent directing credits include Shakespeare
in Love, All the Way, Going to a Place where you Already Are, Zealot, Death of a Salesman, Eurydice and
Elemeno Pea at SCR; Cry It Out at Dorset Theatre Festival; Hand to God at the Alliance Theatre; Byhalia,
Mississippi by Evan Linder at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival; As You Like It for the Houston
Shakespeare Festival; and The Kite Runner at Actors Theatre of Louisville and the Cleveland Play House. He is
thrilled to back home in Pittsburgh with many friends and some of the best audiences in the world.

CLARE DROBOT (Co-Artistic Director, Co-Dramaturg) joined the staff

at City Theatre in 2015 serving as the Director of New Play Development and
Associate Artistic Director (since March 2020). A dramaturg, playwright, and pro-
ducer Clare has worked in various capacities at Premiere Stages at Kean
University, Laura Stanczyk Casting, Williamstown Theatre Festival, The McCarter
Theatre, Play Penn, and New Dramatists. Her work as a writer has been seen in Ars
Nova’s ANT FEST and the New Hazlett Theatre’s CSA Series among others. She
serves on the boards of the National New Play Network and Brew House Association
and is part of the Leadership Pittsburgh XXXVIII cohort. She is a Carnegie Mellon graduate with degrees in
music composition and creative writing, and a member of LMDA.

MONTEZE FREELAND (Co-Artistic Director), a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“Performer of the Year” (2017), has been employed by City Theatre in multiple
positions, including actor, teaching artist, and box office associate. In 2020, he
joined the full-time staff as Associate Producer and was selected as a Producer in
Residence by the National New Play Network. A Baltimore native, his roots in the-
ater began at the Arena Players before moving to Pittsburgh in 2006 to attend
Point Park University (’09). He has served as Producing Artistic Associate for
Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company and Director of Education for Quantum
Theatre Company.

MARK FLEISCHER (Executive Producer, Pittsburgh CLO) In addition

to working as the line producer for CLO’s Summer Season, Kara Cabaret Series and
annual production of A Musical Christmas Carol, Mark launched the CLO’s SPARK
Festival initiative for new small musicals – a program made possible from the
CLO’s Next Generation Capital Campaign. Since its creation in 2017, the program
has contributed to the development of more than 15 new musicals including the
world premieres of Up and Away by Kevin Hammonds and Kristin Bair, Game On by
Marcus Stevens and David Dabbon, Beyond the Moon by Joe Domencic and
Christina McCann, and The Double-Threat Trio by Adam Overett. Prior to joining the CLO, Mark was the
Producing Artistic Director for Adirondack Theatre Festival from 2007 – 2014 where he was named Regions
Best Artistic Director by Metroland in 2009 and Managing Artistic Director for Plano Repertory Theatre in
suburban Dallas from 1993 – 2002. With a passion for new plays and musicals, he has led readings, residen-
cies and world premiere productions for theatres across the country. He is a Board Member of the National
Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) having also served on the organization’s Educational Resources, New
Musicals Festival, Fall and Spring Conference committees. He has served on grant review panels for both the
New York and Texas State Council on the Arts. He has taught acting, theatre history and arts administration
courses at SUNY Empire State College, Columbia College, and Collin College. Mark holds a BA in English
Literature and Communication Arts from Austin College and an MFA in Directing from the Theatre School at
DePaul University.

PITTSBURGH CLO has been a driving force behind the preservation, creation and promotion of live musi-

cal theater since 1946. As one of the largest regional musical theater organizations in the country, it is fortu-
nate for the yearly support of nearly 200,000 audience members. In addition to producing fresh new produc-
tions of Broadway classics, the not-for-profit’s mission is to develop new works and showcase emerging tal-
ent, and has been credited with launching the careers of numerous artists such as Billy Porter, Renée Elise
Goldsberry, Rob Marshall, Kathleen Marshall, Rob Ashford, Bernadette Peters and Shirley Jones. The organiza-
tion’s dedication to musical theater extends beyond its six-show summer season at the Benedum Center to
year-round programming at the 250-seat Cabaret Theater, which saw the world premieres of Up and Away and
Game On in 2018 and The Double-Threat Trio in 2019. Its extensive education efforts include a university
internship program, New Horizons, and in-school programs such as Gallery of Heroes and Creative Vision.
Other ongoing initiatives include the Pittsburgh CLO Academy of Musical Theater, the Construction Center for
the Arts, the Richard Rodgers Award, the acclaimed Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical
Theater and SPARK, a festival for new small-cast musicals launched in 2018. The organization also founded
the National High School Musical Theatre Awards®. To further its mission to grow the art form, Pittsburgh
CLO has been involved with 27 Broadway shows (31 Tony Awards®), and in 2014 produced the world premiere
of An American in Paris in Paris, then on Broadway, where it won 4 Tony Awards® and was the most awarded
musical of the 2015 season, and in London’s West End. Pittsburgh CLO is the subject of a 2007 film starring

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

City Theatre would like to acknowledge that our buildings reside in Dionde:gâ, the Seneca
language name for the Pittsburgh region. We work and create art on the unceded, ancestral
lands of many Indigenous peoples including the Seneca Nation, members of the
Haudenosaunee (hoe-dee-no-SHOW-nee) Confederacy (also referred to by the French as the
Iroquois Confederacy). The Confederacy was comprised of the Mohawks, Oneidas,
Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas and formed to unite the five nations and create a
peaceful means of decision making. The Seneca’s jurisdiction over the area also saw the
region as home to the Lenape (also referred to as the Delaware), the Shawnee, and others.
As recently as the 1960s, one-third of the Seneca’s tribal lands were taken by the U.S.
government to create the Kinzua Dam northeast of the city.

The region’s history also stretches back further to the prehistoric cultures the Adena people,
who were followed by the Hopewell, then the Monongahela and Osage.

We are mindful that our work here is possible because the land and lives of people native to
this place were stolen. Generation upon generation (past, present, and future) of indigenous
people here and all over the world are respectful stewards of the earth and its resources.
Through this acknowledgement, I invite you to join me in paying respect to the elders both
past and present.
