ANDY WARHOL IN IRAN 3 FROM THE CO-ARTISTIC DIRECTORS Welcome to Andy Warhol in Iran, the final production of our thrilling and record-breaking 2023- 2024 season. Many of you reading this program note have joined us as we danced down a new yellow brick road (Somewhere Over the Border), re-visited the pen of Jane Austen (Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley), listened to the heartache and triumphs of our neighborhood (South Side Stories: Revisited) and remixed a Shakespeare classic (Fat Ham). Today we invite you to travel back to 1976 with one of history’s most recognizable figures and another who reflects our resilience as we navigate this ever-changing world. Playwright Brent Askari has crafted a fictional tale through a truthful exploration of revolution. The brisk and tense Andy Warhol in Iran explores the dangers of living truthfully in environments that may oppress originality and aspirational desires. For the young revolutionary Farhad and the defensive Warhol, it is a matter of life or death. This production marks Mr. Askari’s City Theatre debut and the third presentation of this play, with the first premiering at Barrington Stage Company followed by a second production at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre. It is only fitting that City Theatre be the home for this Pittsburgh Premiere and highlight local artists and members of the Pittsburgh Iranian community in conjunction with the production. City Theatre has a history of theatricalizing this hometown mixed media icon in the plays Culture of Desire (1997) and POP! (2012) proving that there are still many curiosities surrounding the life and work of Andy Warhol. Pittsburgh births icons. Internationally recognizable figures rise from the smokestacks of the mills shifting the axis of how we imbibe art. This cannot be an accident. The region nurtures artists and provides the essence of creativity for countless creators. As a patron of the arts, you also have a hand in this legacy. Your participation allows the region’s art to thrive, and we welcome you to join us next season as City Theatre celebrates 50 years of being the storytellers, the future, and the change. Leaning into change, Andy Warhol in Iran will mark the final production directed by Marc Masterson in his impressive tenure as Artistic Director. The Co-Artistic team nicknamed “AD3” has had the honor of opening our doors to you and many vibrant artists for the past three seasons. You have witnessed our collective vision and values on full display, and we thank you for your invaluable support. While “AD3” will morph into “AD squared”, we commit to continuing to invigorate audiences through bold and innovative storytelling new to Pittsburgh. Join us as we usher in another 50 years of artistic excellence and civic collaboration! . Marc Masterson Clare Drobot Monteze Freeland

10 ANDY WARHOL IN IRAN February 2024 Gallup research shows that 81% of Americans currently have an “unfavorable” opinion about Iran. In 1989, this number was 89%. When asked “what country is America’s greatest enemy,” Iran ranks number three. Given today’s geopolitical relationship between the US and Iran, it’s hard to imagine that an American artist, especially one with work so intrinsically tied to American cultural and consumerist aesthetics, was personally invited by the Iranian government to practice his craft. Nevertheless, in July 1976, Andy Warhol arrived with a personal invitation from the Pahlavi palace to capture Polaroids of the royal family. And it wasn’t just Warhol. Elizabeth Taylor, Paul McCartney, Neil Armstrong, and other American icons also traveled to Iran in the 60s and 70s, an unimaginable reality in today’s world. What changed, and why? Modern Iranian history is typically studied in two parts: before and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Andy Warhol in Iran takes place in 1976, when revolution was in the air but not quite reaching its peak. While we reminisce on pre-1979 Iranian culture through a positive, nostalgic lens, working class Iranians like Farhad, the revolutionary in this play, were tired of the King, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, constantly pandering to the West and suffering from severe repression. SAVAK, the Iranian royalty’s secret police at the time, arrested, tortured, and executed dissidents to the royal crown. Writing at the time of the Shah’s overthrow, Time magazine on February 19, 1979, described SAVAK as having “long been Iran’s most hated and feared institution” which had “tortured and murdered thousands of the Shah’s opponents.” But, as Farhad demonstrates, toppling these oppressive systems isn't always peaceful or orderly either. A brief history of Iran By Dramaturg Mehrnaz Tiv

ANDY WARHOL IN IRAN 11 Askari masterfully subverts expectations of the allAmerican art icon and the Middle Eastern revolutionary man. When this iconic, recognizable figure of Warhol is suddenly frozen in the harsh reality of the violent world rather than only his glitzy, pampered exterior facade, neither the audience nor Warhol knows exactly who he is anymore. And what could easily have been an eyeroll-inducing stereotype of the “Muslim hijacking terrorist” rather shifts to Farhad’s vulnerable fears. Andy Warhol and Farhad eventually relate to and understand one another, even while they may disagree on how to achieve freedom. While their lives and experiences are wildly different, their fears and dreams are eye-openingly similar. A 2,500 year old monarchical system was overthrown for a theocratic Islamic government in 1979. To this day, the people of Iran yearn for a better, peaceful, and prosperous future free of governmental oppression. Across the country, women are leading the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, sparked in 2022 by the murder of Jina (Mahsa) Amini by the Iranian “morality police” for allegedly not wearing the hijab in accordance with government standards. From the streets of Iran to the streets of Pittsburgh, we continue to rise up for justice for all. In addition, on Sunday, April 28th, join us after our 2pm performance for a talkback with Ali Shourideh, a CMU professor and participant of the “Be the Voice” rally supporting the rights of Iranian women following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022. Lastly, on Friday, May 3rd, join us after our 8pm performance; we will be hosting our Greenroom Art & Afterparty event with teaching artist, Warren Mayer, from the Andy Warhol Museum. We hope to see you in the lounge for a fun-filled night creating a special art project. The #notwhite collective is a group of 13 women artists whose mission is to use non-individualistic, multi-disciplinary art to make our stories visible as we relate, connect, and belong to the Global Majority. We utilize our arts practice singularly and collectively to Excavate Histories, Expose Realities, and Exorcise Oppression. We are bi/multi-racial/cultural, immigrant or descendants of immigrants investigating the many ways we are seen or not seen, how we selfidentify and how we seek liberation through sharing space and stories; research and art-making; discussing the history of imperialism and its effect on us, on the whole not-white world. We actively reject colonialism through our non-hierarchical process. The #notwhite collective expresses the hybridized and multifaceted aspects of self-defined liberation; we accept cultural fluidity as a means of seeing and being seen, each member declaring their existence, individually and collectively, through our voices, bodies and art.
