CITY THEATRE COMPANY 3A NOTE FROM LEADERSHIP Welcome to the final production of City Theatre’s 2025/2026 season—and our first-ever revival! We are thrilled to partner with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust to bring Hedwig and the Angry Inch to the Greer Cabaret. Performing in this beautiful venue is the culmination of a season defined by producing partnerships, and we are excited to bring City’s bold work \"dahntahn.\" As we celebrated City Theatre’s fifty-plus year history, we asked audiences to share their favorite productions. Time and again, we heard about the 2003 staging of Hedwig, which starred Anthony Rapp alongside local performer Sarah Siplak. This year, the film version of Hedwig celebrates its 25th anniversary and an idea was born to reimagine the production for 2026. At the heart of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s iconic musical is a story of tenacity, love, and the power of finding one’s voice. Hedwig’s journey represents a breaking of the Berlin Wall of the gender binary. It is unabashedly queer, and while our collective understanding of gender and sexuality has evolved since the show's 1998 Off-Broadway premiere, it remains a trailblazing piece of theatre. It is a story filled with hope, pain, and—above all—the transformative power of rock’n’roll. We are tremendously proud of the local artists behind this production, helmed by director Robert Ramirez and starring Treasure Treasure. The entire cast and creative team are rooted in Pittsburgh; their talent and ingenuity are proof positive of the vibrant arts community flourishing in the Steel City. For our loyal City Theatre audiences, we hope you enjoy this foray downtown as you revisit Hedwig’s seminal journey. For those new to City Theatre, we invite you to join us next season on the South Side for five exciting contemporary productions, including two world premieres, and collaborations with Bricolage Productions, RealTime Arts, and the return of The Second City. Thank you for believing in our work and supporting locally produced live theatre. Let’s get ready to wig out! Clare DrobotArtistic DirectorJames McNeelManaging Director

22 HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH REFLECTIONS ON HEDWIG John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch premiered off-Broadway in 1998 at the Jane Street Theater. The pair met by chance on a flight to New York almost a decade prior to that and developed the musical in drag and rock clubs across New York’s Lower East Side in the intervening years, building characters inspired by Cameron Mitchell’s life growing up on US Army bases. Hedwig became a cultural phenomenon, drawing celebrity audiences and culminating in a 2001 movie and debuting on Broadway in 2014. Beyond the production’s success, Hedwig’s material had a progressive cultural impact. At the time, it’s exploration of gender and understanding that it doesn’t exist in a binary was groundbreaking. It is a show rooted in Queer culture that has been deeply meaningful for many LGBTQIA+ community members, even as conversations, particularly around Trans representation, have continued to evolve. In programming and producing Hedwig, I was struck by the number of artists who shared how deeply their initial encounter with the show impacted their artistic journey. Inspired by those conversations, I invited members of the production’s cast and creative team to share when they first encountered Hedwig and both how the show influenced their artistic practice and what it means to tell her story in 2026.—Clare Drobot, Artistic Director I first encountered Hedwig while performing eight shows a week as a 9 year old on Broadway. I was a kid from rural upstate New York, with limited access to queer culture, or anything outside of mainstream, cis-het culture. (With the exception of Rocky Horror, thanks to my very cool, goth older sister. But that was a rare case. I knew Rocky Horror and Titanic. That was it. The next gayest thing was Margaret Hamilton in Wizard of Oz, but I digress... Oh, and Les Miz. ...The drama! The bombast!!) I remember seeing posters for Hedwig - John Cameron Mitchell in the wig - plastered throughout the city while I was doing the Broadway show. I also remember Alan Cumming's face and hot pink nipples in ads for the Studio 54 revival of Cabaret going on at the same time. Somewhere in my nine year old brain, the two shows were linked. They were risque, different, a little scary for my tender baby-gay noggin. I remember a visceral reaction to the gender play happening on both posters. As for the show influencing my artistic journey: I love Hedwig's comedy. I tend to find the laugh in everything, or try to. It's fun to swing between tragedy and comedy as Hedwig, sometimes in the short span of a single line. It's a testament to good writing. Having said that, the true influence of Hedwig on my life remains to be seen. Ask me in September! —Treasure Treasure, (Hedwig/Tommy Gnosis)Anthony Rapp in City's 2003 production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

CITY THEATRE COMPANY 23 REFLECTIONS ON HEDWIGI saw the original production of Hedwig on Jane Street... And it was like an earthquake. Seeing this performance that felt wild, and unapologetic in its wildness, changed my entire understanding of what theatre even was, what it COULD be, if artists were courageous enough to take up space with curiosity and ferocity and danger, and love. My body woke up and started to make room for something more, something noisy, something whole - even if it meant it would take years to collect all the pieces...It took lifetimes to get here, as the self I am, as the self I hope I am becoming, and I can't help but feel like it started on Jane Street, with Hedwig. —Theo Allyn (Yitzhak)I first encountered Hedwig through the film version in 2001 or 2002, while I was in undergraduate school. It was one of those rare affirming narratives to encounter at that time, when there wasn’t a lot of queer representation in media compared to today. This was also at a time where I still wasn’t out to my family and I was living in a relatively conservative area of the country. I was just starting to study video art at this time, so the inventive nature of the film and its use of animation and visual effects was incredibly inspiring, in addition to the heart wrenching lyrics that felt relatable in so many ways. —Scott Andrew (Media Designer)My relationship to Hedwig’s story has deepened as I’ve come to understand how central bodily autonomy is to trans experience. Early on, I connected with Hedwig’s pain and anger; over time, that connection has sharpened into a commitment to foreground the ways trans people’s choices about their bodies are respected or denied. In this production, I want to hold up a mirror for the queer community, not to flatter, but to reflect the full, messy range of our lives: resilience, rage, humor, longing, and joy. Being part of this show feels like both a responsibility and an act of care: to portray Hedwig honestly, to make space for viewers to recognize themselves, and to insist that our stories be seen in all their complexity. —Britton Mauk (Scenic Designer) I relate so much more to Hedwig’s journey than I did at the first. It’s easy to label a Hedwig unlikable and villainous, but I think they’re more of an AntiHero. I’m so honored to be a part of this specific production and hope Pittsburgh audiences , specifically queer folks, see this show. —Victor Aponte (Hedwig/Tommy Gnosis Understudy)I have a very new relationship with the show. However, since being exposed to it, I have realized how impactful and important it is to a great many people. I feel very honored to be a part of bringing this show to life. I'm thrilled to be part of a production that centers on trans and queer characters and stories at this time in our history where they need our support and love. —Shane McLaughlin (Guitarist)Due to space constraints, these are excerpts from those messages, but you can read the full text here.

Today, ACT UP Pittsburgh is fighting to restore healthcare for trans youth and funding for HIV/AIDS that have been stripped by government and corporate insurances alike. Join ACT UP and listen to us on City Theater's CitySpeaks Podcast as we discuss the devastating impact of being denied life saving care in Pittsburgh, as well as how direct action and divestment from corporate hospitals can make change in our community. The Pittsburgh LGBTQIA+ Commission is dedicated to advancing equity, visibility, and wellbeing for LGBTQIA+ residents across the city. We value partnerships with arts organizations that amplify queer stories, celebrate our communities, and foster spaces where everyone can be seen and heard. Season-Long Partnerships The Collaborative for Immigrant Impact In January of 2025, federal policy changes upended the lives of the immigrant and refugee community. With threats of deportation, the removal of birthright citizenship, and the dismantling of the social safety network across the country, we knew we had to act. In Pittsburgh, 18 immigrant-serving organizations responded by reaching out to one another to form The Collaborative for Immigrant Impact. We are organized to defend the international community in our region, support one another, and find innovative ways to preserve the diversity that enriches our neighborhoods, schools, and economy.
