A clever double exposure of Richard Mansfield in his double roles of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde at the Lyceum
in 1888. His portrayal was so disturbing it was seen as influencing the crimes of Jack the Ripper.
The East Cliff and ruins of Whitby Abbey photographed from the East Pier lighthouse, Whitby, c. 1891.
The wreck of the Russian Schooner Dimitry of Narva (that became the Demeter of Varna in Dracula) on
Tate Hill Sands, Whitby, October 1885. (The Sutcliffe Gallery)
Whitby Abbey as Bram Stoker would have seen it in 1891.
The ruins of St Mary’s Abbey Church, York, c. 1891. The only two remaining photographs in Bram
Stoker’s notes for Dracula were assumed to have shown Whitby Abbey but actually show these ruins.
The Many Faces that Inspired Dracula
Explorer Henry Morton Stanley (1841–1904), described by Bram as looking ‘more like a dead man than a
living one’.
Richard Francis Burton (1821–90), explorer, adventurer, spy, translator of The Arabian Nights and self-
confessed murderer.
Poet Laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1902), whose occasional lifting of the upper lip to show the
canine tooth ‘marked an indication of militant instinct in him’.
Painter and playwright William Gorman ‘W.G.’ Wills whose strange bohemian behaviour and appearance
could well have inspired the creation of R.M. Renfield.
Quincey and the Brides of Dracula
William F. ‘Buffalo Bill’ Cody (1846–1917), the embodiment of all that fascinated Bram in America and
the inspiration for the Texan Quincey P. Morris.
Genevieve Ward, an amour of Bram’s youth and a lifelong friend, pictured in the character of Rebecca in
Ivanhoe at Drury Lane Theatre in 1875.
Swedish operatic soprano Christina Nilsson (1843–1921), who, it was suggested, was Gaston Leroux’s
inspiration for Christine Daaé in Phantom of the Opera. (© Victoria and Albert Museum, London)
Hortense Catherine Schneider (1833–1920), one of the greatest operetta stars of the nineteenth century. (©
Victoria and Albert Museum, London)
Hall Caine, pictured shortly before his death in 1931.
The Tumblety family grave and monument, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester, New York. (Rusty Clark)
The urn containing the ashes of Bram Stoker at Golders Green Crematorium, London. When Noel died in
1961 his ashes were mixed with those of his father.
