Spring Auctions 2021

Spring Auctions 2021

Women have been the primary focus of G Ravinder Reddy’s work throughout his artistic oeuvre.
Drawing inspiration from both the sacred and the mundane, whether it were the gilded sculptural
forms of temple deities or the everyday working women he saw in Bombay in the early 1980s,
Reddy’s “work is a celebration of the female form, encapsulated by his eye for detail as well as his
respect for the feminine – whether depicted as giant heads or figurative, voluptuous sculptures…
In all his depictions, whether it’s the nudes or figures inspired from scenes in everyday life… there
is a tremendous, but restrained sensuality.” (Akhila Ranganna, “Why sculptor G Ravinder Reddy is
obsessed with large, disembodied heads of women,” scroll.in, 7 August 2017, online)

249

Image courtesy of Barla Bhargav According to Martha Jakimowicz, Reddy’s
250 approach in portraying women and the
process of sculpting their physical form
is both “…sensitive to and celebratory of
how they are to themselves and one [that]
acknowledges their simple exuberance and
their assured, powerful presence… Working
with live sitters, Reddy models first in clay
and his figures retain much of the lively and
dynamic directness of an attuned realistic
portrayal together with a palpable sensuous
feel of rich flesh, smooth, shiny skin and plump
folds sated in lush maturity. His women never
seduce or display themselves. Their nudity is
naturally and comfortably open — graceful,
calm and dignified, sometimes with a tinge
of the endearingly awkward. Thanks to an
amount of simplification and regularity, an
emphasis on volume pushing out from inside,
the figures gain a universal quality and some
of the sublime monumentality of classical
statuary which is also generated by their
sheer size. The icons, yet, do not leave the
present, since cast in fiberglass and covered by
glossy, opaque commercial paint, they absorb
a contemporary, popular feel… Fleeting
emotions merge under the persistent sense of
wondrous joy, as the women’s huge, wide open
eyes look right into the viewer and further
as well as inside them, as if not noticing the
spectator.” (“Volatile Allure: Metamorphoses
of the Ethnic Woman,” Enchanting the Icon,
Mumbai: Sakshi Gallery, 2003, p. 15)

The present lot was once part of Timeless Art,
an exhibition celebrating the Times of India
newspaper’s sesquicentennial year, with works
on display at the Victoria Terminus (now
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) railway
station in Mumbai in 1988. Curated by Pritish
Nandy, who was then the publishing director
of the newspaper, the exhibition culminated
in an auction of select works, including the
present lot, held a month later aboard a ship
at the docks at Navy Nagar.

Nataraj Sharma’s works allude to the unpredictable yet inevitable confluences of nature, civilisation and
industrialisation, often revealing complex interactions. The artist moved to Vadodara in 1994 to teach art, and
encountered construction and upheaval in a rapidly gentrifying city. He was interested in the "transgressed
and transforming landscape" and the mechanisms behind it. (Grant Watson, "Simulated Realities and Virtual
Experience," Voices of Change: 20 Indian Artists, Mumbai: Marg Publications, 2010, p. 113)
At the centre of the symmetrical composition in the present lot stands a local man, disproportionately tall,
presumably from the Gujarati village of Jambughoda – merely two hours from Vadodara at the foothills of the
Vindhyas. According to Watson (p. 102), "the representation of the human form trapped within structures larger
and more powerful than itself takes on a sense of the monumental in Sharma's many paintings.” The architecture
of the setting seems to suggest opulence, possibly a wing of the historic Jambughoda Palace, which has been
partially converted into a hotel and is located in the midst of nature with a wildlife sanctuary nearby. Sharma has
created other similar works in which animals or humans stand alone against an elaborate backdrop, reiterating the
artist's preoccupation with confronting the collision between nature and the manmade environment.

“...my work is more of a critique and I am not trying to provide
any answers to the question of violence.” — T V SANTHOSH

Adopting and manipulating media‒generated images, T V Santhosh uses his body of work to raise ethical and
philosophical questions about the current culture of violence we are immersed in, and the skewed ways in which
it is represented to us. Santhosh’s paintings expose the multiple readings inherent in the situations they depict,
forcing us to pause and question the veracity of the images and information we receive on a daily basis through
the current news media.

By inverting their colours and turning them into their negatives, the artist moves away from chronologic and
geographic specificity, conferring these works with global resonance. “The distinctive stylistic treatment, which
makes Santhosh’s paintings recognizable without being predictable, subsumes three cardinal elements: first, a
mode of representation that has erroneously been termed as photo‒realism; second, a strict turning of chromatic
scale; and third, an incremental transfiguration of the material, by degree and detail, that is all the more shocking
for its unobtrusiveness.” (Ranjit Hoskote, “Transfigurations at the Margin of Blur: Recent Paintings by T V Santhosh,”
One Hand Clapping/Siren, Mumbai: The Guild, 2003)

Apostrophe, presented by Gallery Chemould at
New Delhi: India Habitat Centre, 1998

PUBLISHED
Jitish Kallat, Apostrophe, Mumbai: Gallery Chemould, 1998 (illustrated)

Jitish Kallat’s early works, often large‒scale canvases, explore a range
of urban references. The gritty underbelly of Mumbai, which the
artist calls home, along with self‒portraits and autobiographical
elements, provide the backdrop for many of these billboard‒style
works. In the present lot, the foreground is almost entirely covered
with a looming image of Kallat; upon closer inspection, however,
one finds that the margins of the canvas feature references to
children and the innocence of youth. Partly nostalgic, partly
cautionary, this canvas documents the simultaneous growth and
decay of the heaving metropolis.

According to Beth Citron, “Jitish Kallat’s crowded textures and
mobbed narratives testify to an ever‒evolving, saturated urban
experience… collectively narrat[ing] an unfiltered, roughly‒
hewn dialectic between individual and universal experiences
in Mumbai… Drawing on elements of autobiography especially
in initial exhibitions like “Apostrophe” in New Delhi, 1998,
Kallat transformed self‒portraiture and distorted pre‒existing,
recognizable photocopy and newsprint images into large‒scale
paintings in step with commercial media and the fast, abrasive
physicality of changing Mumbai.” (“Jitish Kallat,” Chemould
Prescott Road, 2009, online)
