“I want my work to sail midstream between the expressive and the aesthetic.
I want it to have an impersonal kind of drama that comes through the total
body language, like in a dance drama. The work starts from one of the sides
and leans towards the other. When I look back on a work it is this midway
tension that recreates it for me not the original concept.”  K G SUBRAMANYAN

“While Subramanyan insists upon the importance
of the iconography of what he would call
“tradition,” he also insists upon the importance of
“enlivening” these icons, and deliberately interrupting
their easy transmission. As a result, even as he denies
mastery over his own works, their distance from
mere convention is a product of Subramanyan’s own
sensibility.” (Karin Zitzewitz, “The Modernist Icon and
Visual Culture: K G Subramanyan,” The Art of Secularism,

Their mental extensions and changes of identity. I want my painting to be

“The linguistic simplicity of folk or tribal arts give them a kind of resilience;
the same basic devices can be utilized to portray dissimilar visual facts or
change the character of images from the elegant to the bizarre with slight
alterations and additions, a folk terracotta changes from a nimble deer or
horse to a tiger or elephant or a monster; this happens to with the Dhokra
bronzes of Bengal, Bastar or Orissa. Or the wall drawings and Sanjhis of
various parts of India. This recostuming or personality shift and the change
of emotional content I find attractive.”  K G SUBRAMANYAN

“Subramanyan’s fantastic images are in many ways the visual equivalents of the literary genre ‘magic realism’.
Originally associated with Latin American literature, magic realism and become a subject of its own expanding
discourse. It has also been identified by some artistic, literary and postcolonial theorists as a particularly valuable method
for subaltern writers and artists because it challenges genre distinctions and universalizing conventions like realism.
As such, it can be related to Subramanyan’s aesthetic model and is evident in many of his later paintings.” (Margaret
Richardson, “A Marvellous Real,” The Aesthetic Vision of K G Subramanyan, Kolkata: Seagull Books, 2013, p. 129)

“The use of glass or acrylic sheets can be […] further read as a playful pun on traditional concepts of painting. With
these paintings. With these paintings. Subramanyan plays with the ideas of a painting as a window on the world.
A viewer looking through Subramanyan’s glass ‘window’ does not see a mimetic representation of the natural world
but a conglomeration of many different eclectic images and artistic genres in dialogue. According to Subramanyan, this
vision of the world of the world is more accurate and appropriate to contemporary existence.” (Margaret Richardson, “A
