Diocese of St. Augustine
On Sept. 8, 1565, a small band of
Spaniards celebrated Mass on the shores
of North Florida in preparation for starting
a settlement there. They named their new
home St. Augustine in honor of the saint
on whose feast day they sighted land. Thus
were the seeds of Christianity first sown in
America north of Mexico.
St. Augustine is the site of the first
permanent parish church, now the
Cathedral Basilica. The famed Santa Fe
Trail originated here. It was from here
that Franciscan missionaries began their
trek north and west to proclaim the Good
News. It was here that the first schools and
hospitals were established.
It was not until March 11, 1870 that
Florida, east of the Apalachicola River, was designated as the Diocese of St. Augustine. The
growth of the church in Florida from this Mother Diocese to six additional dioceses and more
than two million Catholics is a significant part of the story of the Catholic Church in the United
States. Today, the Diocese of St. Augustine embraces 17 counties spanning the northeast section
of Florida from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. It covers 11,032 square miles and
serves 163,525 registered Catholics.

Bishop of St. Augustine
ishop Felipe J. Estévez was born Feb. 5, 1946 in Havana, Cuba and arrived in the
B United States on a Pedro Pan flight as a teenager. He is the second of three children
(two boys and a girl) of Adriano and Estrella Estévez. Most of his family lives in St.
Petersburg, Fla. His parents are deceased.
He was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1970 in Fort Wayne, Ind., for the Diocese of
Matanzas, Cuba. Bishop Estévez has completed extensive studies in spiritual theology, earning a
doctorate from the Gregorian University in Rome. He is also fluent in English, Spanish, French
and Italian.
From 2001 to 2003, Bishop Estévez served as spiritual director of St. Vincent de Paul Regional
Seminary in Boynton Beach, Fla. where he served as rector from 1980 to 1986. He was pastor
of St. Agatha Parish in Miami for 14 years, while also directing campus ministry at Florida
International University.

Bishop Emeritus of St. Augustine
B ishop Victor Galeone was appointed by Pope John Paul II as bishop of St. Augustine
on June 26, 2001 and he was installed at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine on
Aug. 21, 2001. Bishop Galeone, son of the late Angelo and Rita Galeone, was born in
Philadelphia on Sept. 13, 1935, the fifth of six children. His family moved to Baltimore
in 1941. There he attended St. Elizabeth of Hungary School in Highlandtown, Md. before
entering the minor seminary of St. Charles College in Catonsville, Md. in 1949. He completed his
theological studies at the North American College at the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy.
He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Martin J. O’Connor in the chapel of the North
American College in Rome on Dec. 18, 1960. He received his S.T.L. (Licentiate in Sacred
Theology) from the Gregorian University in 1961 and his master’s of education degree from
Loyola College in Baltimore in 1969. On his return to the United States in 1961, he served as an
associate pastor, as a teacher and principal, as a pastor in several parishes in the Archdiocese of
Baltimore, and as a missionary in Peru.
While in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, he was the archdiocesan director of the Propagation of
the Faith, and a member of the Priests’ Council, the College of Consultors for the Archdiocese of
Baltimore and the National Board of Directors of the Holy Childhood Association.
