INTRODUCTION
“ T E C H N O L O G Y I S A U
S E F U L S E R V A N T B U T
A DANGEROUS MASTER” (LANGE). IN OTHER
WORDS, TECHNOLOGY CAN BE EITHER A
BENEFICIAL TOOL THAT HELPS IN THE
ADVANCEMENT OF CIVILIZATION OR A
LETHAL WEAPON THAT HELPS IN THE
DEMOLISHMENT OF SOCIETY. THIS TAKE
ON FRANCIS BACON'S QUOTE “MONEY IS A
GREAT SERVANT BUT A BAD MASTER”
COULD ALSO BE REPLACED WITH THE
WORDS THE INTERNET, SOCIAL MEDIA,
DEVICE, SMARTPHONE OR ANY NUMBER OF
THOSE THINGS IN LIFE THAT WE LOVE AND
YET HATE. THOSE THINGS WE NEED AND
YET DON’T ALWAYS WANT. OR WANT BUT
DON’T ALWAYS NEED. THAT WHICH OFFERS
US SO VERY MUCH AND YET TAKES AWAY
IN EQUAL MEASURE. ACCORDING TO THE
DICTIONARY, TECHNOLOGY MEANS THE
APPLICATION OF SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE
FOR PRACTICAL PURPOSES, ESPECIALLY IN
INDUSTRY. IT IS A VERY POWERFUL TOOL
THAT PROVIDES NUMEROUS SERVICES LIKE
TELECOMMUNICATION, CLOUD COMPUTING,
AND CYBERSECURITY TO THE GENERAL
PUBLIC.
WHEN TECHNOLOGY IS A USEFUL
SERVANT…
“Technology is best when it brings people together”
- Matt Mullenweg
Everywhere in society, there is a phone, computer, or smartwatch in sight with people unable to
disconnect. Everyone exploits the new and improved technology for its elegant look and
convenience. Along with technology, there is social media, where people from all over the world
come together to share personal experiences. From the sharing, they can find empathy from others
and find joy in seeing what their friends relish in their achievements. Also, it can be used to keep in
touch and say hello to family or friends or a person you may not see very often by using social
media such as Messenger, Telegram and WhatsApp. In addition, people can continue to thrive in
their relationships and their face to face interaction as there is already a video call application like
FaceTime. They can use it to create face to face communication between them.
As for the workers’ perspective, they can work from home to make it easier for them as there are
many assignments to do. It can save their time rather than go to a workplace that usually has traffic
jams. Workers also can seek out experts if they have trouble in completing their assignments by
messaging them. Furthermore, they can connect with people in their field of work to discuss the
projects at the touch of a screen by using Meet and Zoom. So, people can learn, connect and work
in ways that our disabilities had previously made impossible.
BUT TECHNOLOGY IS A DANGEROUS
MASTER…
Humans excessively use electronic devices to the point
where it becomes harmful. Technology negatively impacts
society because it causes physical, social, mental health
issues, and although technology contributes to an
increase in exercise due to fitness gadgets, people have
become extremely dependent on these imprecise
electronic accessories. In a scientific study guided by
Paula Hakala, “the risk of neck shoulder pain increased
when computers were used 2-3 hours a day or more, and
lower back when computers were used for over 5 hours a
day” (Antoine-Chager). In Hakala’s study, the more hours
contributed to technology use, the more physical health of
an individual is affected furtherly with the constant
posture of looking down or sitting at a desk with a
hunched back.
Apart from that, people will not know when to put away
the device because they are obsessed with it. They wait
desperately to count every ‘like’ on their latest Instagram
photo. They are too busy checking emails or news feeds
yet they already forget to enjoy the moment such as
smelling a rose, listening to the chirping birds and the
gentle breeze. Children who are already addicted to their
game controller, they can not put down the game
controller to come to the dinner table when it is already
time. For the teenagers, they usually become depressed at
witnessing the happy holiday updates of others or the
achievements of those in their feeds. So, they will compare
their life with others, disrespect others and themselves
because of the posts that appear in their feeds.

CONCLUSION
We need technology to be our servant and not our master. Most of us will continue
to experience elements from both sides of the ledger. But being aware of the level of
good and bad influence is imperative in order to make a change. Indeed, technology
has advanced greatly in business and for society’s overall health, but examining
deeper, the physical, social, and mental effects of electronic devices outweigh the
benefits. Ultimately, technology should not be depended on and should be used to a
minimum. Minimal use of technology will uphold meaningful relationships, personal
growth, and true happiness. Nonetheless, technology will define life in the near
future, creating a simplified world full of advancements, but is it worth ruining human
health and standards substantially?
