Warm up

■ Two laps around the court
■ A short stretch before beginning any activity

Tournament rock paper scissors

■ Skill focus: strategy
■ Equipment: none
■ Space requirement: half court
■ Rules: same premise as rock paper scissors but the class will disperse at the court.

Players must find another player to play RPS with, with only one round. The loser of
RPS must follow the winning player to cheer them on. If a player has accumulated
followers and lose to another player, the player with the followers and the followers
themselves must follow the winner. At the final round when there are only two
players left, they will have to play best 2 out 3. the winner of that is the overall
winner.
■ Time needed: 5-10 min

Trapped

■ Skill focus: space awareness
■ Equipment: none
■ Space requirement: full court
■ Rules: This is a basic game of tag, but in this game those who get tagged must

stand with their legs apart. In order to be free someone must crawl in between your
legs.
■ Time needed: 5-8 minutes

Keep it Up

■ Skill focus: concentration, agility
■ Equipment: 6 balls for 2 groups or 3 balls for one group
■ Space requirement: Half the Court
■ Rules: Split the students up into two groups and have them on opposite sides of the

court. The players scatter over their side of the playing area and a ball is tossed into
the air. The objective is to keep the ball in the air using any part of the body. Once
one ball is up, get two or three balls going at the same time. The group to have all
their balls hit the ground first loses.
■ Time needed: 3-5 minutes

Dodge Ball

■ Skill Focus: Hand eye coordination and agility
■ Equipment: 10-15 balls
■ Space requirement: half court
■ Rules: Split the class into two teams with 10-15 balls along the line in the middle of

the court. Have each side start off with their backs against the wall and at the sound
of the whistle they will rush over and try to obtain the ball. The objective is to
(underhand) toss a ball at a player to get them out. If the opposing player catches
the ball the thrower is out. The last person left untagged is the winner.
■ Time needed: 3-5 minutes

Tug of war

■ Skill focus: strength and endurance
■ Equipment: rope and marker
■ Space requirement: half court
■ Rules: split the class into two groups. Have them grasp the rope firmly and at the

sound of the whistle the two teams will pull on opposite ends of the rope. The team
that pulls the other team past the marker wins.
■ Time needed: 3-5 minutes

Corners

■ Skill focus: speed and listening
■ Equipment: four different colored cones
■ Space requirement: full court
■ Rules: Four different colored cones will be at each corner of the court. Students will

walk randomly throughout the court. The instructor will yell out one of the colors.
Students are to run or get to that colored cone, quickly as possible within those
eight seconds, while each second is being called. Those who don’t make it to the
cone in time are eliminated.
■ Time needed: 8 seconds

Dead tag

■ Skills focus: Speed
■ Equipment: 3-4 as taggers
■ Space requirement: full court
■ Rules: 3-4 players will be “It’”. Students will spread out through out the court, and

when they have been tagged they will lay on their back with their feet in the air.
Those who have not been tagged are to touch those who are on the floor to bring
them back to life without being caught, and then continue the game.
■ Time needed: N/A

GET IN IT

■ Skill focus: Effort
■ Equipment: Hula hoops
■ Space Requirement: half court
■ Rules: Hula hoops are to be scattered out randomly through out the court and

students are to walk around until they hear a number called. Once the number is
called that number of people are to try and fit into one hula hoop within 4 seconds.
Those who aren’t in a hula hoop within the time are out. Also a hula hoop is removed
each round.
■ Time needed: 4 seconds

spoon race

■ Skill focus: Balance and speed
■ Equipment: spoons, balls and cones
■ Space requirement: half a court
■ Rules: split the class into four groups of five and then line up single file line. The first

in line will take the spoon with a ball on it and race to and around a cone and back
to exchange the spoon with the next team member without dropping the ball. The
team with member all make it back first wins.
■ Time needed: 3-5 minutes

Christmas tree

■ Skill focus: speed, balance and teamwork skills
■ Equipment: one item for each person in line 30 items hula hoops, bean bags, balls,

noodles, cone, etc.…
■ Space requirement: half the court
■ Rules: split the class into four Groups of five students. Within each group have four

students form a single file line. The one left out will be the tree and will stand on the
opposite side of the court. Each student in line will receive an item to “decorate” the
“tree”. At the sound of the whistle the students in line will race over one by one to place
an item on the “Tree” this could be anywhere on the person. Ex: Hula hoop hanging on
arm, bean bag in hand, cone on head. The group that decorates their tree the fastest
wins.
■ Time needed: 3-5 minutes

Human basket

■ Skill focus: accuracy, teamwork, and speed
■ Equipment: 2-3 dodgeballs
■ Space requirement: half court
■ Rules: class will separate into two even teams or three and will get into lines at the back

of the court. The instructor will determine the distance best suited for where the baskets
should be. A basket is a person with their arms out and forward, looped in front of them
with their hands touching. The person in front of the line will be a basket and the person
behind them is responsible or shooting a ball into the human loop. If the ball makes it
into the loop the basket goes into the back of the line and sits to indicate they are done.
The person who just shot must now become a basket and the process repeats. The
person who finishes the whole line first wins. The basket can move their arms and body
as long as the loop does not move from their designated spot.
■ Time needed: 3-5minutes

Capture the chicken

■ Skill focus: concentration/reaction
■ Equipment: rubber chicken
■ Space requirement: Gym floor
■ Rules: The class will be split into three groups that form a circle. There will be a

chicken placed in the middle of each team. The instructor will give commands such
as “touch your head”, “hop on one leg” etc.. You are to do those commands, but
once the word “chicken!” is said you are to quickly try and grab the chicken. The first
one to capture the chicken wins.
■ Time needed: 5-8 minutes
