Your Challenge

Thank you for taking part in the Sailors’ Society Trek, organised by our Hong Kong Ambassador group.
This pack will provide you with all the basic information you will need to get started on your physical training and fundraising activities. Final information will be issued closer to the event with all the details you require.
Your team’s challenge is to:
•Complete the 32km trek, section 4-8 of the Honk Kong Trail
•Your team must stay together throughout the trek, cross all four checkpoints
and the finish line together.
•Raise HKD5,000 in team sponsorship to support seafarers worldwide

Sailors’ Society
Thank you so much for making the first steps towards raising money for seafarers and their families. As you read this pack, there are currently 1.5 million men and women working at sea all over the world.
With your help we are able to support merchant seafarers at home, in port and at sea by maintaining a staff of professional chaplains all over the world, as well as supporting seafarers and their families through a variety of community projects.
Our chaplains offer the hand of friendship and practical welfare help to merchant seafarers by visiting thousands of ships, ports and seafarers’ centres every year.
They offer support to seafarers’ families, ex-seafarers, as well as seafarers in hospital, to those in prison on shore - giving help wherever needed. Our chaplains are a family for those who feel lost and lonely.
Over 90% of the world’s trade is transported over the sea. But who are the invisible people that get it from here to there and why should you care?
How about these reasons:
• They are away from home and family for 9-12 months.
• 88% of them can’t access free internet to check on loved ones while away at sea
• Their families won’t know for weeks if they are abandoned in a foreign port, have a serious accident on board ship or are attacked by pirates
• Piracy is a real threat. In the first quarter of 2015, 140 hostages were taken by pirates.
•The chair your sitting in, the screen you’re reading this on and the clothes you’re wearing probably all got there thanks to seafarers like them.

Training Tips
Although competition of the trek is very achievable it is essential that your body is fit enough to cope sometimes steep terrain.
•Start your training ASAP
Depending on your targets you should look to start your training as soon as you can. Those teams looking to break records will probably be training from the day of registration! Sensible teams intending to walk should be OKAY with a few sessions at the gym each week, along with a good walk each weekend.
•Hit the hills or climb the office stairs!
We appreciate that every competitor has a busy working life and that a large percentage of your training will take place in the gym. However, please try and walk up and down at least a couple of real hills. A step machine in the gym does not replicate the repeated warring of doing and muscles on a proper hill walk. Use the stairs in the office, this will not only help build strength in your legs but also increase lung capacity
•Have fun!
You can do it and it will be worth it. The exhilaration upon achieving the challenge will make you instantly forget about your aches and tiredness! And the benefit your sponsorship will bring to seafarers will be immeasurable.
MIND YOUR FEET
•Wear a pair of good hiking boots or running shoes. Make sure they are well broken-in before the event by wearing them on practice walks.
•Experienced walkers found that double socking helps enormously. Some walkers recommend wrapping feet with adhesive bandage while others suggest massaging feet with vaseline. Try these in your training and pick the best for your feet.
•A pedicure a week before the event helps avoid injuries to the toes when going downhill
•Changing socks can help prevent blisters. Never try to remove blisters; instead, a protective plaster over a blister can be helpful

Medical Advice
The medical team and volunteer event marshals will be available for advice and support if medical attention is needed during the event.
Competitors with chronic medical conditions should consult their usual medical practitioner for a check up and to assess fitness to complete the event
Competitors must complete the heath questionnaire and return it to the event organisers at least four weeks prior to the event; these are passed to the medical team and will be held only for the duration of the event. Those competitors with chronic medical conditions may be contacted, as necessary, by the medical team.
Competitors taking regular medication should make sure they have plentiful supply with them; and the necessary documentation to allow them to carry such medications. It may be prudent to leave a small supply of important medications with the medical team prior to the event.
Each team must carry a first aid kit. The minimum content must be the following: • Antiseptic wound wash
• Antiseptic wound spray
• Compeed blister plasters
• 1 or 2 sterile dressing
• Elasticated knee support
• Elasticated ankle support
• Oral rehydration sachets (e.g diorylyte)
Sickness or Injury during the trek
• Take good care of your health. Incase of sickness, please inform your teammates immediately and do not hesitate to call for help
• Under no circumstances should any person be left unattended. Any member who is injured or suffering from exhaustion must be brought to the nearest check point by teammates for assistance.
• If a team member becomes seriously injured and cannot move, you must call the emergency phone number immediately (printed on your languard) to inform the organiser and specify your location. Teammates must accompany the injured person before the rescue team arrives.
• We advise that each team should have at least two fully charged mobile phones for emergency use. If you require emergency assistance, please inform us of your team number, locations, state of injury and phone number to facilitate our immediate response.

Sponsorship Tips
In addition to being a physical challenge, the Sailors’ Society Trek also tests your fundraising skills.
Please do not put this off until it’s too late!
•You can achieve your fundraising target!
•Take some time to brainstorm ideas with your team members.
•Identity all your networks e.g clients, colleagues, family etc
•Make a list of who you can target and the levels of sponsorship you can aim for.
•Agree with your team members which companies and people
you will approach, set up a JustGiving page, use the intranet, Facebook and Twitter to increase support.
•The majority of funding in the past has come from corporate sources. Teams have approached other companies, clients, suppliers or those in the industry.
•There are four of you in a team. Your target is to raise as much sponsorship as possible. We ask you to pledge to raise a minimum of HK$5,000 per team.
•Try to get as much money as you can up front from your sponsors, as it is more difficult to collect funds after the event.
Match-Funding
Your company may operate a match-funding scheme where they will match any money you raise for charity. Contact your personnel department to find out.
JustGiving Page
This is a fast and easy way for charities and their supporters to raise funds online securely. Building and personalising your team’s fundraising webpage is very quick. Simply visit www.justgiving.com/sailorssociety then email your link to everybody in your contacts list!

Fundraising Ideas
Organise an Event
Share the organisation of a fundraising event between you. Negotiate discounted rates with a local centre or club or persuade them to donate their venue free of charge all in the name of charity. We are happy to help with ideas!
Casual Work Day
Encourage your colleagues to wear casual or nautical wear to work for one day and pay HK 50 for the privilege. This will also help you raise awareness in your work place.
Charity Raffle
You can theme your raffle and ask local companies for donated prizes. Restaurant, theatre and treatment vouchers go down very well.
Coin Collections
Loose change and foreign coins collection pots in all your offices can help get in extra funds!

Event Sponsors
A special thank you to our event sponsors who have made this trek possible.
