66 INTERNATIONAL Dr. Maher Stino Dr. Laila El Masry Master Planning Landscape Architecture Architecture Engineering Site Supervision/Project Management Nabq Touristic Center The Ministry of Tourism invited Sites International to prepare a master plan for a 2700-acre major touristic center adjacent to the Nabq Conservation, located on the eastern coast of the Sinai Peninsula. Nabq represents the Gulf of Aqaba’s largest coastal conservation and is a touristic magnet, with 600 km2 of protected virgin landscape sheltering a variety of ecosystems. The diverse landscape features deserts, mountains and valleys. The Tourist Center will be developed over two decades in four phases. The master plan hosts a variety of hotels, chalets, apartment units, retail and recreational facilities, and services to attract investors across the socioeconomic spectrum. Residential accommodations for the on-site labor force were also incorporated in the plan. The master plan made use of the natural plateau of the landscape, keeping buildings inland in order to maximize panoramic views and access to the Gulf of Aqaba and the two islands of Teran and Sanafeer. Streetscapes, plazas, ample green spaces and shaded trails are located throughout the site. When the project is completed, over 25,000 hotel rooms will be available in addition to chalets and apartment units. 76 INTERNATIONAL Dr. Maher Stino Dr. Laila El Masry Master Planning Landscape Architecture Architecture Engineering Site Supervision/Project Management The American University in Cairo Sites International, working closely with multiple international and local firms, developed a master plan and landscape design for the 260–acre New Cairo campus of this notable university. Sites International played a key role in technical site coordination/site supervision. The design vision for the site is a tightly–knit learning environment that encompasses indoor and outdoor spaces. The central spine serves as the backbone of the campus, while geometrically–configured architectural features in the form of gateways, plazas and courtyards, subtly introduce new spaces along the course of the spine. Sustainability was central to all facets of the project. Every landscape decision was made with a limited irrigation water budget in mind. Sites International created a catalogue of planting material used in their design for future use by the community and in the classroom. The landscape as a whole is an environmental showcase for the best of things Egyptian in an institution that uniquely brings together what is American and Egyptian. 82 INTERNATIONAL Dr. Maher Stino Dr. Laila El Masry Master Planning Landscape Architecture Architecture Engineering Site Supervision/Project Management New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) NYUAD is a comprehensive liberal arts campus scheduled to open in 2012. Sites International prepared the landscape master plan and design guidelines with the intent of creating an oasis-like haven for students and staff. The highly urbanized campus and extensive building land coverage posed a real landscape design challenge. Almost all landscaping is built on roofs, including parking garages, academic buildings and student / staff housing. Extensive studies were conducted to respond to the extremely hothumid climate of Abu Dhabi. Native and adaptive plant species were selected. Hardscape materials with minimum heat gain were specified. The design provides sheltered and shaded areas for students’ outdoor use. Roof gardens play both an aesthetic role and minimize heat gain through the roofs of buildings. Project Location: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Owner: New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Discipline/Services: Landscape Architecture.

88 INTERNATIONAL Dr. Maher Stino Dr. Laila El Masry Master Planning Landscape Architecture Architecture Engineering Site Supervision/Project Management Nubian Museum The Nubian Museum, recipient of the 2001 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, is a true illustration of landscape architecture that is sensitive to site topography and context. In the late 1980s, UNESCO sponsored the establishment of a museum to display the history, culture and heritage of the Nubian people. The museum rests on a unique hilltop site overlooking the Nile River city of Aswan. Sites International’s design concept centers on creating several themed outdoor display areas and includes a long stream representing the Nile River as it flows through Egypt. The stream symbolically starts in the topographically rough landscape of ‘Upper Egypt’, descends through several cataract style waterfalls and ends in the ‘Lower Egypt Valley’ with palm trees and greens of the Delta. The 43,000 m2 site contains numerous indigenous plants spread over natural rocks. An amphitheater is carved out of the steep adjacent slopes. A small Nubian village street brings Nubian culture and daily activities to life. Project Location: Aswan, Egypt Owner: Supreme Council of Antiquities Discipline/Services: Master Planning. 97 INTERNATIONAL Dr. Maher Stino Dr. Laila El Masry Master Planning Landscape Architecture Architecture Engineering Site Supervision/Project Management Manyal Palace Museum The Manyal Palace was built in the late 19th century as a residence for one of the royal Egyptian princes. Neglected for nearly a century, the Ministry of Culture recently embarked on a renovation effort. Sites International worked with the Ministry to restore the original palace layout, accentuate existing planting with specially cultivated trees and shrubs and introduce site furniture, water features, lighting and public toilets. The new landscape design pays tribute to the historical site and gives due attention to the Nile River bordering the site.
