FROM THE DESK OF
REGIONAL DIRECTOR-NORTH

It gives me immense pleasure to present Annual Report of BAIF Livelihoods – Uttar Pradesh for
year 2021-22. It is a long journey of 47 year from 1975 since BAIF started programme in Prayagraj and
Banda district which are now spread across all 75 districts of the state and have achieved many
milestones in diversi ied sector of rural development. Livestock Development focusing on Genetic
improvement through doorstep AI services, Delivery of AI with Sex sorted semen especially in
resource poor area like Bundelkhand, support for feed and fodder and health care services;
Productivity enhancement in agriculture through input support, Fruit trees and vegetable cultivation,
introducing new interventions for water use ef iciency, education and livelihood support for illiterate
women are some of the important achievements through our projects during the year which are
contributing in achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

Programmes which are now spread across 36, 390 villages in state have been able to generate
an asset in the form of productive dairy animals (Over 3 Lakh female calves produced every year),
small ruminants, fruit orchards, Various structures, equipment and skilled manpower which has
helped to improve livelihoods of over 10 lakh families and contributing in economy of the state.

It has been possible due to generous support of our partners and funders including Govt. of
India, Govt of Uttar Pradesh, NABARD, HDFC Bank, Rosa Power Supply Company Ltd, Dalmia Bharat
Foundation, HCL Foundation, BMGF, Mahindra & Mahindra, Sistema Bio and faith and active
participation of rural families in our programmes.

I also gratefully acknowledge valuable support and guidance of BAIF Management and
dedicated efforts taken by our state team.

We remain indebted towards society and look forward to reaching out to poorest of poor to

FOREWARD

Its pleasure to get opportunity to present the journey of BISLD -UP in Yr. 21-22. UP Program cover
all 75 districts with outreach of 36,390 villages, bene iting more than 10.12 lac families. The Livestock
Development Programme is continuing as the key programme in Uttar Pradesh.

This Programme is providing gainful self - employment to more than 1230 rural youths. During the
year 2021-22, a total of 20,07181 Als with were performed with an average of 136 AI/CDC/month. BSM
centres have emerged as an effective tool of Livelihood options for rural youths.

Another feat during the year 2021-22 is performance of 30940 A.I. using sorted semen technology.
This was done under the inancial assistance provided by Corporate Houses, NABARD, CSR & State Govt.
Out of total 30940 A.I. performed, a total of 26577 calves were reported in which 92.52% (24590) were
Female calves! The results are very encouraging. Although the technology is highly appreciated by the
cattle owners, but the Sorted Semen A.I service is still expensive enough to be afforded by all of them and
is therefore presently being implemented successfully in Corporate or Govt. funded Projects only.

Goat A.I. has also been initiated in 16 districts of U.P. Side by side, the Fodder Development Program
was also started and has been well accepted by the farmers. With the implementation of interventions
viz. Goat A.I., Sorted Semen A.I., promotion of Fodder Cultivation, Backyard Poultry etc. the Programme
can truly be seen as moving towards a Comprehensive Livestock Development

Besides Cattle Development, Farm-based Livelihoods, Renewable Energy, Women Empowerment,
Education & Capacity Building are other thematic areas where Programmes were started in 21-22. A
Holistic Rural Development Project was started with the support of the HDFC Bank in Raebareli &
Kaushambi districts in 25 & 15 villages of the Deeh block of Raebareli & Nevada Kaushambi, respectively.
Through Functional Literacy & formation of SHGs, 729 women participated in Capacity Building &
Women Empowerment Program in Bundelkhand.

Another Women centric project was implemented in Ramgarh block of Amethi, funded by
Mahindra and Mahindra. In this Project, women played a leading role in vegetable cultivation. They were
also imparted tractor driving classes. To demonstrate and popularize use of renewable energy, 385 Solar
Street lights were installed in needy places of villages and 600 Solar lanterns were provided to weaker
families with school going children in Kaushambi & Raebareli

In the project funded by Bio Systema, a total of 132 Bio-Digesters have been installed and these are
producing gas equivalent to 12 cylinders per year. State team has played noticeable role to make our
presence in in various development sectors of the state

We are grateful to our donors Govt. of U.P., Department of Animal Husbandry, NABARD, HDCFC
BANK Ltd, Rosa power supply Company Ltd, Dalmia Bharat Foundation, HCL Foundation, Sistema Bio,
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for their valuable support. We look forwards to make our programmes
more comprehensive & impactful in year ahead.

UTTAR PRADESH PROGRAMME

DIVERGENCE AND SURMOUNT

BAIF Development Research Foundation made a modest beginning in Uttar Pradesh through Cattle
Development Programme in the year 1976 in Banda and Allahabad (now Prayagraj) districts in collaboration
with "Prayag Chitrakoot Krishi Avam Godhan Vikas Nigam Limited, Karwi" with an objective to create
productive assets at the doorsteps of the farmers in the form of crossbred cows, which can yield more than 2100
litres of milk per lactation.

The impact of the programme was well appreciated by the farmers and policy makers. After critical
analysis and evaluation of the programme by the Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of UP, attempts
were taken to further scale up the programme.

Later on, looking at the success of the programme, the Government of India recognized BAIF as a reliable
rural development agency and provided support to its rural development programmes under the IRDP Scheme
which was later merged with its new SGSY scheme. The programme was further expanded to 311 centers in 42
districts with the help of DRDAs. With support of various projects with Govt, CSRs and other partners, program is
now spread across all 75 districts of the state and is serving as a tool for sustainable livelihood for the families
through improvement in milk production through dairy cattle and buffalo. Various projects on Watershed
Development, Ravines and Sodic land development, Diversi ied Agriculture, Sericulture, Human Health, Women
empowerment and strengthening of Local POs are also taken up in different parts of the state.

Programme of BISLD UP is now spread across all 75 districts of the state bene itting over 10.12 Lakh
families in 36,039 villages of the state.

Livestock Development Programme is the major program of BISLD- U.P. which is spread across all
the districts of the state. It aims at improving the livestock breed through arti icial insemination for
enhanced production. Promotion of goat husbandry and backyard poultry is encouraged especially for
landless, small and marginal farmers. The Livestock Development Programme is being implemented as a
tool with a focus for ensuring sustainable livelihood and improved productivity and enhanced milk
production.

Dairying being an attractive source of livelihood has great scope in bringing economic
development by increasing income and employment opportunities. It is found to be the most important
allied activity to agriculture that gives ready source of income especially for small and marginal farmers
and agricultural laborers.

Keeping this in mind, Livestock Development Programme is continued since 1976 which has acted
as a tool to ensure sustainable livelihood through increase in milk production. The programme covers
the adoption of Cattle and Buffalo breeding services with introduction of new technologies at the
doorstep of the farmers. Extension support for livestock management and dairy practices is an integral
part of the programme. The key components are: -

· Genetic improvement of livestock through Arti icial insemination centers each catering to a
Cluster of about 12-15 villages.

· Increased productivity by breed improvement through Arti icial Insemination.

· Preventive health care.

· Promotion of fodder production and feed management.

· Facilitation to develop value chains.

· Health care support for small ruminants.
These services are provided at the doorstep of the farmer through a well-trained technician who

looks after the operation of the center which is established at the village level with all required
equipment's.

During the year 2021-22, 1230 Livestock centers were in operation, which were established with
the support of Govt. and other support organizations.

Out of these 1230 centers, 157centres in Bundelkhand region were supported by DoAH, and 7

With this buck, now, he impregnates his goats and goats of other goat rearers of his village.
Until now, he has sold goats worth INR 70,000. With this whopping amount of money, he maintained
his house, which was old and used this money for his son's marriage also. Currently, he is having goats
