Support Groups

Iona Senior Services’ Support Groups 202-895-9448
4125 Albemarle St. NW, Washington, DC 20016
The aging process can bring emotional challenges to seniors and
caregivers alike. Our licensed therapists help groups and individ-
uals heal from, and overcome, these emotional hurdles. Iona pro-
vides support groups (as well as individual and couples counsel-
ing) on a variety of topics including depression, Alzheimer’s,
chronic illness, and caregiving. Our support groups are listed be-
low:
www.iona.org

Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group
at Sunrise at Fox Hill
Share experiences, troubles, and accomplishments with older
caregivers at this Bethesda support group, conveniently of-
fered on weekday evenings. The group is sponsored by Iona,
the Alzheimer’s Association, and Sunrise at Fox Hill.

Early Evening Caregiver Support Group for Adult
Children
Being a caregiver is a very difficult job – but it’s one that you
don’t have to do alone. Adult children and other caregivers of
a senior with a chronic or acute illness, including dementia,
will benefit from the chance to share what they’re experienc-
ing, gain support for themselves and their loved ones, and
connect with resources, programs, and services.
Registration required.

Low Vision Support Group
Share experiences, gain support, and learn about technology
and resources at this support group for seniors experiencing
vision loss. Registration required.

Lunch Time Caregiver Support Group
at Springhouse of Westwood
Spouses, partners, adult children, and other caregivers will
have an opportunity to share their challenges and successes,
get input from the group’s facilitator and other group mem-
bers, and learn about helpful resources. Registration re-
quired.

112 202.895.9448

Memory Loss Support Groups at Iona
Individuals diagnosed with memory loss and their family and
friends are all affected by the diagnosis and the changes that
come with memory loss, but the experience is different for the
diagnosed individual and those who care about them. Recog-
nizing this, Iona has developed two groups that meet simultane-
ously and provide support, information, and resources specific
to each one’s needs.
Individuals with memory loss and their care partners meet to-
gether for half-an-hour of coffee and conversation, then the
group splits into separate support groups – one for the individ-
uals with memory loss and one for their caregivers.
Registration required.
Parkinson’s Support Group
Seniors with Parkinson’s Disease share their concerns, chal-
lenges, changes, and losses in this support group, co-sponsored
by Iona and the Parkinson Foundation of the National Capital
Area. Registration required.

Support Group for Caregivers of Spouses/Partners
with Dementia
This support group for spouses/partners of individuals with
dementia meets to share concerns, achievements, frustrations,
and losses involved in caring for partners who are coping with
dementia. Registration required.
Learning about Memory Decline at Sunrise at Fox Hill
Iona and Sunrise at Fox Hill are partnering to bring Iona’s ex-
pertise to caregivers in the community. Each month, an Iona
social worker will lead a discussion on a topic of interest to peo-
ple caring for someone who has dementia, and there will be
time for caregiver support. Registration required.

Villages

Villages are neighborhood-based organizations, emerging across
the country, that assist people in aging in place, safely and comfort-
ably. There are several models. Most models are member-ship
based with services such as transportation, computer training, and
home maintenance. Often these services are provided by volunteers
and vetted professional providers. Villages also may offer social and
educational activities. Iona supports the efforts of the Village move-
ment, and remains committed to providing support services to local
Villages and their members.
