BERNARD KHOURY

Bernard Khoury is a Lebanese architect
who lived in and out of Lebanon during
the Civil war. He received his Bachelor
in Fine Arts in 1990 and Bachelor of
Architecture in 1991 from Rhode Island
School of Design and his Masters in
Architectural Studies from Harvard
University in 1993. Khoury began his
professional career in post-war Beirut.
His first built project was the B018
which was completed in 1998. He
has built a reputation for being able
to produce critical interventions in
problematic zones. Some of his recent
works include the Seashore (Lebanon),
Bank of Beirut (Biyada, Lebanon) and
N.B.K residence (Beirut, Lebanon).

Khoury has taught at the American
University of Beirut,École Polytechnique
Fédérale de Lausanne and l’Ecole
Speciale d’Architecture in Paris. He
is co-founder of the Arab Center for
Architecture.

are organized along three floors and includes

high-ceiling reception areas located on the

upper level. The northern terraces of the project

located at the lowest edge of the site are also

accessible from the reception area by making

use of a mobile balcony that travels vertically

on the façade. Thus, with a site responsive

design and a dynamic facade, Plot 4328 projects

a unique character of its own. dd

saw a participation of national and
international architects and imminent
speakers from 21 Asian countries. The
inaugural ceremony held on 23rd May,
2017 was attended by eminent dignitaries
like Shri Vasundhara Raje, Chief
Minister of Rajasthan; Shri Venkaiah
Naidu, Minister of Urban Development,
Govt of India and Shri Ashok Lahoty,
Mayor, Jaipur City. The theme of
the five day event was “Happiness
through Architecture”. The highlights

The London Blaze:
An Eye Opener for all

The recent blaze at Grenfell Tower in London’s
North Kensington district is yet another stark
reminder in a short span of time, about the
indispensability of using proper fire retardant
materials in buildings.

According to reports, the ACPs used for the residential
building’s cladding were a cheaper, less flame resistant
material which contributed to rapid spread of the fire and
resulted in heavy casualties. Given the population density
of India, a fire accident of the kind may result into an even
bigger disaster.

The idea is to make a building fire-casualty proof. And the
material being fire retardant, contributes to that. Aludecor is
one of the ACP companies in India that is trying to sensitize
the industry about the importance of using FR ACP.

One of the criteria of fire resistance is that the ACP envelope
will contain fire and retain its structural integrity for 2 hours.
The 2 hour window provides the time for evacuation. An
authentic FR material will produce negligible smoke, taking
into account that too much smoke blurs the occupants’ visions
and results in choking. An FR ACP should also not produce
killer toxic gases and flaming droplets. To find out if an FR
ACP meets these criteria or not, it is tested at different fire
testing labs, one of the most respected among which is Exova
Warrington fire of the UK. Aludecor’s FR ACP, Firewall, has
cleared the relevant tests at Exova, and has been certified for
reaction to fire as well.

Aludecor Fire Wall has 71 per cent mineral content and
is made with AA5005 alloy. Magnesium Hydroxide
(MDH) is the non-halogenated material that is mixed with
Polyethylene to form the core of its FR products. Aludecor
is also equipped with a Baby Line, a miniature version of an
ACP Lamination Line, where trial production of the mineral
core takes place. The mineral core produced in this Baby
Line is subjected to rigorous testing. It is only after passing
these that the particular batch goes for final production. The
company is also equipped with in-house fire testing lab where
non-combustibility, ignitability, limiting oxygen index and
smoke density are tested.

It’s time that the National Building Code of our country made
compliance to codes pertaining to fire protection, mandatory.
NBC should also introduce relevant codes for fire testing
methods and reaction to fire as well.
