A Gift of Gratitude: Mercedes Millington ’57 Supports Mid-Pacific’s New Middle School SOME LESSONS NEVER FADE. For Mercedes (Domingo) Millington ’57, the values and skills she gained at Mid-Pacific helped define who she is today. In appreciation of the lasting impact Mid-Pacific had on her life, Millington recently pledged a remarkable $500,000 toward the school’s new middle school building—a gift that marks a significant step forward in bringing the project to fruition.“This gift is my way of saying thank you,” Millington said. “Mid-Pacific helped build my confidence and taught me leadership, public speaking, and how to carry myself in the world. I hope it inspires future students and allows them to expand their knowledge in ways that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.”The gift will be funded through the John C. Mithun Foundation, where Millington serves as a board member. Through this generous foundation gift, Millington will sponsor the middle school building’s open-air gathering space designed to offer sweeping views of the quad and bring students, alumni, and the community together. Born and raised in the small town of Hawi on Hawai‘i Island, Millington recalls her years as a boarding student at Mid-Pacific in the 1950s as a time of formative growth. At Mid-Pacific, Millington received early exposure to the arts, developing a love for classical music after a history teacher took her class to a symphony. From learning etiquette in the dorms to taking speech classes and getting involved in student leadership, Millington says Mid-“Mid-Pacific gave me the tools to ste p into the world with a clear sense of self and a voice of my own.” The new middle school building will replace Bingham Hall, located to the left of Wood Hall.6 4 I N S T I T U T I O N A L A DVA N C E M E N T N OT E

Pacific gave her the tools to step into the world with a clear sense of self and a voice of her own. “I tell people where I am in my life is because of Mid-Pacific,” Millington shared. “The things I learned there were just incredible.”After graduating from Mid-Pacific, Millington attended the University of Southern California. Now a longtime resident of Santa Barbara, California, Millington has dedicated much of her life to philanthropy, particularly in education, the arts, and natural spaces. Her generosity to Mid-Pacific has been steadfast. She previously established an endowed scholarship fund for the performing arts, ensuring that students with a passion for the stage would have opportunities to grow.Millington traces her philanthropic spirit back to her childhood and the values instilled by her parents, who owned a small grocery store in their community. She recalls how her mother would quietly add a little extra—a loaf of bread, a couple of cans of milk—into the baskets of customers who were struggling, many of whom were plantation workers. Each Christmas, Millington would help wrap gifts for their children to ensure they had something to open during the holidays. “What just warms my heart is knowing how important it is that we look after each other,” Millington said. That spirit of generosity and her deep appreciation for the role Mid-Pacific played in her own life led her to support the school once again, this time with a transformative gift for the next generation of learners. Designed to foster interdisciplinary learning and collaboration, Mid-Pacific’s new middle school building will feature modern classrooms, cutting-edge technology, and open common areas that encourage team building. The new facility will replace the aging Bingham Hall, which was built in the mid-1950s. Millington chose to sponsor the new building’s open-air gathering space because of what it represents: connection, community, and a place to gather. “The whole idea is about people mixing and getting to know each other. I think that’s where real understanding happens—when you have the chance to relate on a social level, a learning level, or whatever it may be. Honoring Family Through Giving: How the Next Generation Is Carrying Forward a Legacy at Mid-PacificHONORING FAMILY CAN COME IN MANY FORMS, from preserving traditions to building something new that lasts. For Brian Buhr and JR Ching, it means giving back to a place that shaped the lives of their loved ones: Mid-Pacific. Neither attended Mid-Pacific, nor did they grow up in Hawai‘i. Yet, both are now establishing endowments that honor their families’ legacies while opening doors for students of today and tomorrow. Brian Buhr: Honoring Heritage Through OpportunityEast Coast native Brian Buhr sees Mid-Pacific as a place of opportunity for his grandmother, grandaunt, and greatgrandfather. It started with his great-grandfather, Pok Kee Lee, class of 1918, who left Līhu‘e, Kaua‘i on a scholarship to MidPacific in the early 1900s. That decision changed the course of the family’s trajectory. At Mid-Pacific, Lee served for several years as captain of what was then known as the MPI Farm and went on to build a successful career as a horticulturist. “If he hadn’t gotten that scholarship to go from Līhu‘e to O‘ahu, they very well could still be on Kaua‘i, and he might have gone into ministry like his father,” Buhr said. “That scholarship had such a monumental impact.”Years later, Lee’s daughters attended Mid-Pacific as well: Buhr’s grandmother, Bo Ock (Lee) Lum ’44, and her sister, Chin Ock (Lee) Mitchel ’44, who is Buhr’s grandaunt. They left Leilehua High School to attend Mid-Pacific after World War II began. Valley with all her friends was really special for her. And it prepared her well.” Her interest in dietary nutrition led her to Iowa State University, where she met Buhr’s grandfather before eventually settling in Chicago.After his grandparents passed away, Buhr and his family began thinking about meaningful ways to honor them. He remembered how much his grandmother spoke about MidPacific, and how proud she was of the opportunities the school had given her family. Buhr and his sister, Claire, decided to create an endowment in the names of their great-grandfather and great-grandmother: The Pok Kee Lee ’18 and Ruth K.B. Lee Family Endowed Fund for Student Financial Aid.The endowment provides tuition support for students with proven financial need, with preference given to students who are first or second generation immigrants to the United States. Their hope is that it provides these students the same kind of opportunities that Buhr’s family received from Mid-Pacific. “Mid-Pacific opened its doors to our family twice, giving them the chance to succeed, to dream, and to see beyond the limits of where they were living. Līhu‘e or Wahiawā can feel very small, but at Mid-Pacific, even back then, you realized there was a much bigger world out there,” Buhr said. “Even if our gift helps one or two students in the future realize that there’s so much they can accomplish, I think that’s really special.”JR Ching: Building a Legacy of LeadershipBorn and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, JR Ching spent his childhood summers visiting Honolulu, where one of his earliest ties to Mid-Pacific came through the summer sports camps at the school. But the strongest connection to MidPacific was through his father, Norman Ching ’58, whose years as a boarding student left an indelible mark on his life and character. JR says Mid-Pacific gave his father a strong education while nurturing his growth as both an athlete and a leader. Norman excelled in basketball and baseball, but he was equally dedicated to leadership, actively serving in student government and even representing the dorms as a senator. At the University of Hawai‘i, he carried that same drive, becoming a four-year starter on the varsity basketball team, including as captain his senior year, and serving as class president. His leadership extended into his professional life as well, where he became a respected executive at IBM. “For my father, Mid-Pacific gave him not just academics, but a foundation of life skills and outlook that shaped the way he raised us,” JR said. “That emphasis on a strong education has always been very important to all of us. And it also speaks to his experiences around sports and leadership at Mid-Pacific that shaped him into the person he became.”In honor of Norman and as a way to give back to the school that played a pivotal role in his life, the Ching family has established The Norman ’58 and Grace Ching Scholar-Athlete Fund to develop critical leadership skills in student-athletes. JR himself was a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Inspired by that merit scholarship program, this endowment introduces a first-of-its-kind model at the secondary school level. It will provide selected students with leadership opportunities from their freshman to senior years and is designed to recognize students who excel both in the classroom and in athletics, giving them opportunities to grow as leaders through curated summer experiences. “At the heart of this program is service and impact. We hope these students are inspired to give back not only to Mid-Pacific, but also to the broader community,” JR said. “By providing these experiences, we want to instill a mindset of leadership and service that will carry with them through college and into their lives beyond.”The Ching family also felt strongly about establishing this endowment during Norman’s lifetime, allowing him to see the impact of his legacy firsthand. “It was important that my father have a voice in shaping the program,” JR said. “This way, his values are reflected in the opportunities it creates for others.”For both JR Ching and Brian Buhr, honoring family means more than remembering the past. It’s about carrying forward a legacy. It’s a way to express gratitude to those who came before them while extending their impact to the next generation, ensuring that the opportunities once given to their loved ones continue to open doors for others. Reflecting on Her Past, Jeanne (Uyetake) Houlton ’64 Invests in Mid-Pacific’s Future With $1M Planned GiftIN THE EARLY 1960s, Jeanne (Uyetake) Houlton ’64 spent her days navigating a highly structured routine as a boarding student at Mid-Pacific. From lights out to the meticulous cleaning of hair brushes before room inspections, order and precision dictated daily living. Even though adjusting to the dorm’s strict environment was tough, Houlton credits her years at Mid-Pacific as instrumental to her success in life and in her career in fashion merchandising. Houlton says she learned powerful lessons beyond the classroom.“It was all about discipline. I was used to living that way. That’s how I was trained,” Houlton shared. “So later, when I started working, I could handle it. I think it helped me, even if I didn’t realize it at the time.”That formative experience left a lasting impression. In return, Houlton has made an extraordinary commitment to Mid-Pacific: a generous $1 million planned gift to the school’s endowment. This gift, an estate bequest, will support Mid-Pacific’s dedicated students and educational programs in perpetuity. Contributions like hers ensure that future generations of students will continue to thrive in an environment of excellence and innovation. “I hope my gift helps academically rich students receive a well-rounded education, even if they are struggling financially,” Houlton said. Born and raised in Honolulu, Houlton transferred to Mid-Pacific from Kalani High School as a junior in 1962, calling herself a “late bloomer” to the school. It wasn’t until her sophomore year that she learned about Mid-Pacific from two of her father’s colleagues, both alumni who raved about their experiences, especially the fun of dorm life. Houlton lived in Atherton Hall, the all-girls dormitory at the time, while the boys were housed in Wilcox Hall, now the site of Mid-Pacific’s preschool and elementary campus. She remembers a very structured lifestyle, with lights out at 9:00 p.m., followed by a wake-up call at 7:00 a.m. sharp, and frequent room inspections that ensured pristine conditions, down to clean hair brushes. After graduating from Mid-Pacific in 1964, Houlton earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing and business administration, with a minor in fashion merchandising from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She went on to build a successful career in the fashion industry before eventually relocating to Florida with her husband.Now retired, Houlton devotes her time to one of her biggest passions: teaching ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging. Of all the lessons she took from Mid-Pacific, time management stands out the most. “Even in retirement, I still keep a schedule,” she said. “That discipline never left me.” It’s a lesson Houlton hopes current and future Mid-Pacific students will carry with them, too. Through planned giving and other forms of support, she encourages fellow alumni and the broader community to consider supporting these students by investing in Mid-Pacific’s future. “I hope the donation grows over time through wise investments, so it can support future generations of successful graduates who, in turn, give back and help others,” Houlton said. A Tax-Wise Way to Give Back to Mid-PacificFOR BOBBI SAKAMOTO ’65, giving back to her alma mater is personal and practical. When Sakamoto began taking her Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from her IRA, she discovered it could be a powerful vehicle for supporting something close to her heart. In 2018, Sakamoto established an endowment to support students passionate about community service, and she has continued to contribute annually. The first scholarship recipient was named in 2022.By directing part of her RMD to Mid-Pacific, Sakamoto fulfills IRS requirements without paying income tax on the amount she gives, a win-win that also supports current and future Owls. “Since I’m required to take a portion of my IRA each year, it feels only natural to give back to a school that made such a difference in my life,” Sakamoto said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to help students experience the kind of education that meant so much to me.”Many people don’t realize that Mid-Pacific is a qualified charitable organization, which means gifts made directlyfrom an IRA can count toward your RMD and reduce your tax burden. Meet Mike: Hawai‘i’s First AI-Powered Virtual Engagement OfficerMID-PACIFIC RECENTLY INTRODUCED its newest team member named Mike, the first-ever virtual engagement officer (VEO) powered by artificial intelligence in the state of Hawai‘i. This groundbreaking technology is poised to transform Mid-Pacific’s fundraising and engagement efforts, reinforcing the school’s forward-thinking approach and position in the community as a leader in educational innovation and philanthropy.“From embracing generative AI tools like ChatGPT across campus to integrating cutting-edge technology in classrooms, Mid-Pacific remains at the forefront of educational progress,” said Shannon Cleary, vice president of institutional advancement. “With Mike, we are leveraging the power of AI to strengthen relationships with our community, offer more dynamic ways to stay connected, and streamline our workflow.”Developed in partnership with Givzey, a digital fundraising and engagement company, VEOs are autonomous fundraisers that build trust with donors and supporters by communicating directly with them and learning their giving intentions. Spreading Warmth Through Language: Ogawa Family Donates $250K to Mid-PacificFOR ANDY AND MAKO OGAWA, language is about more than communication. It’s about building relationships. Born and raised in Japan, the couple believes that learning languages is one of the most powerful ways to connect with the world—and with one another. That belief inspired their recent $250,000 gift to Mid-Pacific, made through the Six Tree Foundation.“We believe communication and understanding the languages of different cultures is critical to strengthening relationships between countries, and we see Mid-Pacific as a school that supports that message,” the Ogawas said.Of the Ogawas’ total gift, $100,000 will provide immediate support to Mid-Pacific’s Japanese program, expanding the school’s library of Japanese literature and media, funding field trips and on-campus activities, and laying the groundwork for future exchange opportunities with students in Japan.The remaining $150,000 establishes the Nukumori Endowment for World Languages, ensuring ongoing support in perpetuity for the department, which currently offers instruction in Japanese, Hawaiian, Spanish, French, and Latin.
